Lots of accident activity at Highway 76 and Old Highway 395 over the holiday weekend. A two-vehicle accident just after 7:30p Sunday tied up return-from-holiday weekend traffic. No reports of injuries. And the driver of a pickup truck that crashed into a fire hydrant at that same intersection fled on foot around 11p Saturday night. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/04/17/news/driver-flees-after-hitting-fire-hydrant/78630.html

After two years of construction, work on the northbound I-15 from Winchester Road past the 215 split will be substantially complete with all new lanes and bridges open beginning Monday morning at 6a. To accomplish that, however, there will be a 55-hour full weekend closure of both north 15 onramps from Winchester Road beginning this Friday night at 11p. There will also be overnight closures of both the north 15 and 215 Murrieta Hot Springs Road off ramps and the northbound 215 connector nightly beginning tonight and continuing nightly through Sunday. But starting Monday, you should see the benefits of this major project to keep traffic entering both freeways from Winchester Road out of the main stream of northbound freeway traffic until past the 215 split. Winchester, Jefferson and Ynez Roads should be less congested as well with fewer vehicles backed up, waiting to get on the freeway. Minor cleanup work will continue alongside the freeway for several more weeks. Details of all the work can be found at www.TemeculaCA.gov. (city of Temecula social media post)

First quarter earnings reports have been dropping for the past week or more. But the two reports all eyes are on are coming out this week … Tesla tomorrow and Alphabet on Thursday. The two tech giants have struggled to regain former glory as members of the Magnificent Seven club. Tesla shares are down 40% so far this year. Barclays Bank cut its price target on Tesla today from $325 to $275 a share, noting that if Elon Musk spent less time in Washington, things for his EV company could turn around. Meanwhile, Alphabet, whose Google division just lost its second anti-trust suit has seen its shares drop by 22% year to date. The court cases regarding illegal advertising monopolies could potentially lead to a breakup of Google. Google’s ad business is also a concern for investors as retail giants like Temu and Shein cut back on advertising because of tariffs. And shareholders will want to know how Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini is doing against competitors like Open AI since Google has allocated $75b towards AI data centers and servers this year. The good news for Alphabet is YouTube, which it acquired 19 years ago. YouTube is now the most-watched streaming service and a major revenue source for Alphabet. www.morningbrew.com
As of yesterday, DHL is temporarily halting overseas shipments to the U.S. of goods valued at more than $800 due to the “significant increase” in red tape at customs caused by tariffs. The White House plans to close the under-$800 loophole beginning May 2. www.morningbrew.com
Rite Aid is preparing to sell off assets in its impending second bankruptcy. Last month, the pharmacy giant entered talks with the providers of its asset-based loan to get more operating cash. Rite Aid emerged from its last bankruptcy in September after closing hundreds of locations and cutting about $2b in debt. https://news.bloomberglaw.com/bankruptcy-law/rite-aid-prepares-to-sell-itself-in-pieces-for-second-bankruptcy
According to the Wall Street Journal, Home Depot’s biggest earner is its garden department. The more than 2k Home Depot garden centers bring in $20b annually. That includes plants, bags of soil, pavers, decorative rocks, grills and lawn furniture. The company operates 25 trial gardens across nine climate zones to identify what will successfully grow where, helping eliminate amateur gardener frustration and ensuring repeat business. Almost all plants sold in Home Depot garden centers this year came out of annual trials from the past several years. www.morningbrew.com
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Sinners” opened in first place with $48m in ticket sales. That pushed “A Minecraft Movie” into second place in its third weekend with another $40.5m. “The King of Kings” was third at $17.5m. “Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing” and the 20th anniversary re-release of “Pride and Prejudice” debuted in 7th and 8th place on far fewer screens than the others with about $2.8m in ticket sales each. “The Wedding Banquet” bombed in limited release at only $800 per screen. Both the three and four-day Easter Weekend total takes for the Top Ten movies were less than either of the previous two weekends, both of which Minecraft dominated. But Easter was still one of the five biggest weekends so far this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W16/

Chinese EV battery company CATL says its tech is even better than rival BYD’s. CATL is boasting of getting 320 miles range after a 5-minute charge, putting it close to even with a gasoline refueling stop. Both Chinese companies claim superior battery technology to anything from Western companies like Tesla, whose superchargers take 15 minutes to charge to a little over half the range claimed by CATL. Mercedes-Benz is claiming it has batteries that can get 200 miles after a ten-minute charge. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/22/chinas-catl-claims-to-beat-byds-ev-battery-record-with-longer-range-on-a-5-minute-charge.html
While the Boston Marathon was going on, including weekend celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War, scientists were literally picking up the pieces at a half marathon in Beijing where 21 humanoid robots competed against human runners. The winning robot finished in 2 hours, 40 minutes, about 2 ½ times what it took the first-place human. Other automated entrants at least achieved a steady pace. But several barely made it past the starting line with one crashing into a fence and breaking into pieces. All the U.S. tech giants see humanoids as the future. Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts his company’s Optimus robot could generate more than $10 trillion in revenue. Apparently, humans don’t believe the prophecy of “Terminator” or “I, Robot” as investors have contributed more than $7.2b over the past decade to over 50 tech startups who could be facilitating the robot uprising. www.morningbrew.com

- 1966, “Wild Thing” by the Troggs – formerly known as The Troglodytes was released in the U.S. by two different labels. It’s the only song ever to hit #1 simultaneously for two competing companies.
