LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

San Diego Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of a body found in a residence in the 3000 block of Willow Heights Road in Fallbrook.  The sighting by a person making a welfare check at the residence was called in around 9:30a yesterday.  Arriving deputies confirmed the person inside was dead.  Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888 580 8477. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/homicide-detectives-investigate-persons-death-in-fallbrook-home

A welfare check in Vista resulted in an hours-long SWAT standoff yesterday in the 700 block of North Citrus beginning around 10a.  It continued at least past 3:30p.  San Diego Sheriff’s Department did not release any other details.  https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/barricaded-suspect-prompts-residential-swat-standoff-north-county

The Oceanside Police Department presented a plan to the city council last night to have drones be the first responders to calls in the downtown area.  The department believes a drone program could cut response times from about five minutes down to as little as 60 seconds, while giving responding officers information on incidents before they arrive.  The proposed pilot program calls for a Real Time Crime Center from where drone pilots would operate the craft.  The drones would be strategically placed on the roofs of various downtown buildings.  The program would be funded by a state grant to the city.  Chula Vista already has such a program in place. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/oceanside-police-department-proposes-drone-first-responder-program

In security product review platform, SafeWise’s latest study of FBI statistics, two San Diego County cities made the rankings of safest cities this year.  Poway was #12 and San Marcos was #13.  The report shows both cities have experienced recent declines in both property crimes and violent crimes.  Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County was ranked the safest city in California for the second year in a row.  Murrieta ranked #16 and Menifee was #18.  All the safest cities had fewer than 2.2 violent crimes per 1k residents. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/2-san-diego-area-cities-rank-among-top-20-safest-california-report

That major road closure coming to Temecula is now less than 36 hours away.  For 55 hours this weekend, both northbound I-15 onramps from Winchester Road will be closed and overnight closures will continue on some northbound I-15 freeway lanes with a full closure of the 215 at the split.  It’s the final push to open everything from the I-15/French Valley Parkway improvement project that’s been underway for the past two years. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/55-hour-carmageddon-coming-major-rivco-freeway-onramps-close-down

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Getting some video game platforms is tougher than playing the games.  Or you could consider it a game in itself. Preorders for Nintendo’s Switch 2 went live at Walmart, Best Buy and Target last evening at 9p.  At Walmart, most customers were put in a long, slow digital queue.  Some did get a Switch in their cart.  But many were still in line hours later.  Some that did get through reported baffling error messages.  The evening started well at Target.com.  But problems began mounting as some customers reported success and reaching a confirmation screen only to get a cancellation email shortly after, forcing them to start the whole process over again.  Best Buy didn’t even start its queue until a half hour after scheduled.  Within an hour, Target and Walmart reported being sold out.  Best Buy kept customers hanging for several more hours.  GameStop put Switch 2 on sale at 8a this morning, both in-store and online.  Their online store crashed as a result.  Those with a Nintendo account might get an invitation to pre-order directly in May.  But there’s no guarantee.  Nintendo isn’t even promising it will meet its original release date in June because pre-order demand in Japan has been far higher than the company’s projected supply of Switch 2’s.  All of last night’s chaos came after an on-again, off-again pre-order date rescheduling due to tariff implementations.  Nintendo also hasn’t been clear on pricing, formats and content.  https://www.ign.com/articles/nintendo-switch-2-pre-orders-went-live-and-were-predictably-a-mess

A toxic algae bloom in the Pacific Ocean off the coast from San Luis Obispo to San Diego has been detected for the fourth year in a row, with experts calling this one the worst yet.  It’s already killed more than 50 marine animals including whales and dolphins.  16 were discovered Sunday in San Diego County.  Debris from wildfires and fertilizer runoff are suspected causes of the algae spread.  Sea lions and birds can be rescued and saved.  But consumption by dolphins is almost always fatal. https://www.kpbs.org/news/environment/2025/04/24/toxic-algae-bloom-killing-dolphins-marine-animals
