The city Wildomar this morning sent a fleet of tow trucks to remove dozens of RVs illegally parked in that city since a homeless encampment was dismantled in the City of Industry in Los Angeles County earlier this month. Wildomar’s code enforcement department warned Black Series RV’s, the company that owns the trailers, and the property owner that the trailers could not be stored on the residential lot in the 20700 block of Palomar Street and needed to be removed immediately. Mayor Ashlee DePhillippo publicly announced April 16 that the city would obtain an abatement warrant to forcibly remove them. The warrant was served at 8a this morning. The trailers were taken to the Rivera Towing yard in Lake Elsinore. Black Series will have to pay a fee for each trailer to get them back. www.pe.com

Consumer sentiment it at its lowest since the pandemic due to anxiety about tariffs. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index released today fell for the fourth consecutive month, down 11% to 50.8. The director of the survey says the decline included all ages, incomes, education, geographic regions, and political affiliations. Respondents who think unemployment will rise in the coming months increased for the fifth consecutive month. That sentiment is now the highest its been since the Great Recession in 2009. Americans now expect long-term inflation to increase to 4.4%. That statistic may catch the eye of the Federal Reserve as it considers its next interest rate move. According to business forecaster, Capital Economics, Americans’ inflation expectations are the highest since 1991. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/consumer-sentiment-report-plunge-april-michigan-trump-tariffs/
Chinese online retailers Temu and Shein said today they’re set to hike prices in preparation for U.S. tariffs against their products coming here from China. Neither company specified the amount or timing of the price increases. They’d been enjoying the under-$800 de minimus loophole for imports up until now. But that exception is closing. Temu is a U.S.-based offshoot of Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo, selling a wide variety of products to 750m app users each month. Shein is a popular fast-fashion brand selling low-cost clothing made in China to U.S. customers. There is disagreement over whether the U.S. and China are in tariff negotiations or now. President Trump said Wednesday that we are. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson dismissed that as “fake news” – a position which China repeated today. A number of major U.S. retailers have also announced plans for price increases due to tariffs. They include Best Buy, Nintendo, and Auto Zone. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/shein-temu-price-increases-set-effect/story?id=121155117
Despite China’s hard line on whether tariff negotiations are underway, the country appears to have quietly rolled back retaliatory tariffs of 125% on some semiconductors made in the U.S. and imported to China. That was reported by CNN based on information from three importers in the tech-heavy city of Shenzhen. China has projected an air of strength and confidence regarding tariffs. But these exceptions suggest a less than completely hardline attitude towards President Trump’s tariffs on U.S. imports from China. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/china-quietly-rolls-back-retaliatory-tariffs-on-some-us-made-semiconductors-import-agencies-say/ar-AA1DA6tX
California’s economy has grown to overtake Japan as the fourth-largest in the world. According to Gov. Newsome’s office, California’s gross domestic product is now $4.1 trillion – about $98m more than Japan. That places just the state of California behind only the entire U.S., China, and Germany among the world’s economies. In Newsom’s words, “California isn’t just keeping pace with the world – we’re setting the pace.” That may be a little boastful, since it’s likely India will overtake California for 4th place next year. https://ktla.com/news/california/californias-economy-overtakes-another-country-now-4th-biggest-in-world/
