In the never-ending game of head coaching musical chairs, the New York Rangers have hired Mike Sullivan to replace Peter Laviolette, who took the Rangers to the Eastern Conference final last year. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks had significant gains on all three major U.S. indexes. The Dow and S&P 500 were each up about 1 ½%. The Nasdaq gained 1.8%. Gold was up, trading $20.30 higher on the Comex at $3,242.50 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down almost a dollar at $58.26 a barrel.
A healthy April jobs report is likely to keep the Federal Reserve on hold as far as interest rate changes anytime soon. The Labor Department says U.S. employers added 177k jobs last month – down from the 185k in March, but better than expected. Manufacturing jobs declined by 1k. But they had been expected to decrease by 5k. The unemployment rate was 4.2% – the same as last month. https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/us-jobs-report-april-2025
A bunch of tariffs went into effect today. The de minimis loophole, which allowed shipments of good worth less than $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free ended last night. It’s what allowed all those cheap Chinese-made goods to be sold online and at low-end retailers. The baseline tariff as high as 145% will now potentially double the cost of those items. When President Trump closed the de minimis exemption for goods from Hong Kong and China earlier this year, chaos followed. USPS briefly stopped delivering parcels from China and the huge amount of de minimis packages – nearly 4m per day suddenly had to go through extensive customs inspections – something U.S. Customs wasn’t prepared for. Consumers are already reporting that online retailers like Temu and Shein are now unaffordable. Temu says it’s trying to find more U.S.-sourced products to sell now that Chinese goods are unaffordable, but that in some categories they don’t exist. A 59% majority of U.S. consumers surveyed last week say Trump’s policies have worsened U.S. economic conditions. https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/economy/de-minimis-packages-tariff
Wendy’s needs you to buy more Baconaters. Sales at its restaurants are down and costs are rising. The fast food chain has lowered its earnings forecast for the year and sales in the first quarter were down a little over 1%. Worldwide sales are expected to be either stagnant or decline up to 2% – an about-face from an earlier forecast of 2-3% growth this year. https://finimize.com/content/wendys-lowers-earnings-forecast-as-burger-traffic-slows
A year ago, California enacted a big jump in the minimum wage for fast food workers – $20 an hour for large chains. How’s that going so far? Workers are earning more. But many say their hours have been cut. Employers acknowledge limiting hours and enacting a hiring freeze to offset the cost of higher wages. Employment at California fast food restaurants is down 3.1% since March 2024. That’s 22,600 jobs lost – and not all of them fell under the new higher wage policy. Some economists say it’s too soon to blame the FAST Act for those lost jobs, but there are signs of negative costs associated with the wage hike. Others say California’s population loss and slower economic growth are to blame. Minimum wage for other jobs in California is currently $16.50 an hour. https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/business/california-fast-food-wage-hike-one-year-high-prices-jobs

President Trump has signed an order seeking to end federal funding for National Public Radio and PBS, calling them not only “outdated and unnecessary, but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence.” The order says that “Unlike in 1967, when the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was established, today the media landscape is filled with abundant, diverse, and innovative news options.” Trump and loyalists including Elon Musk have long complained that NPR and PBS are biased and left-wing. Three of the five CPB board members were removed by email a few days ago. The Trump administration has repeatedly blocked NPR and PBS reporters from covering news at the White House and Pentagon. Lawsuits by CPB are likely. (Disclosure – Rez Radio is not an NPR member and does not receive any funding from CPB.) https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/trump-signs-executive-order-stop-federal-funding-npr-pbs-rcna204375

On this day in music history – May 2,
- 1963, The Beatles had their first #1 hit on the British music charts with “From Me to You”. It was the first of 11 consecutive British #1 singles by the Fab Four. Their first U.S. hit single wouldn’t enter the charts for another eight months.
- One year later, in 1964 the Rolling Stones self-titled debut album began the first of a 12-week run at #1 on the UK charts. Also on that day the Stones’ first U.S. single, “Not Fade Away” entered the U.S. singles chart at #98.

- In 2005, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce got together for the first of four nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall, 36 years after their group, Cream had split up. It’s said Clapton agreed to the gig at the time because of the failing health of the other two. Baker survived another 14 years, passing in 2019 at the age of 80. Bruce passed away in 2014 at age 71.
