President Trump posted yesterday on social media that he was authorizing the Commerce Department to immediately begin setting up a 100% tariff on movies “produced in Foreign Lands”. Today, a White House spokesman appeared to possibly be walking back the idea, saying “the administration is exploring all options to deliver on President Trump’s directive to safeguard our country’s national and economic security while Making Hollywood Great Again.” The statement really only added to the confusion. It’s unclear whether tariffs would apply to movies on streaming services or in theaters or both and whether they would be calculated on production cost or box office revenue. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/05/05/trump-announces-tariff-on-foreign-films/83452190007/

Shares in Skechers shot up about 25% today. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/05/skechers-to-be-acquired-by-3g-capital.html

Record numbers of federal student loan borrowers with a payment due are currently seriously delinquent on those payments – over 20%. Just before the start of the pandemic, it was 11.5%. The current portion in default among sub-prime borrowers is over half. Payments were suspended during Covid. But that ended in September of 2023. Research suggests a combination of inability to pay, not realizing payments are due, or simply deciding not to pay. Delinquency on student loans can drop a borrower’s credit score up to 200 points. The Department of Education has vowed to start collecting on defaulted student loans beginning today. https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/05/business/student-debt-collections-delinquent
