Employees and customers were evacuated and SDG&E shut down power to the building to allow firefighters to rescue the trapped truck driver. Both victims were transported to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla with non-life-threatening injuries. Residents and visitors to Old Town Temecula had a Sheriff’s helicopter hovering overhead yesterday during the lunch hour. An attempted traffic stop near Rancho California Road and the 15 freeway around 11:45a resulted in two suspects running from their vehicle into Old Town. During the manhunt, deputies swarmed the area, ordering residents to stay inside. Children on a field trip to Old Town were ordered back onto their school buses. 27-year old Pablo Flores from Lake Elsinore and 31-year old Ramos Blas were both taken into custody and booked into French Valley jail for violation of probation, resisting arrest and reckless evasion. https://patch.com/california/temecula/2-arrested-after-helicopter-search-near-i-15-old-town-temecula
A 44-year old Wildomar man was taken into custody after allegedly intentionally crashing into the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s station on Limited Avenue Monday morning. Deputies discovered through surveillance footage that a vehicle drove over the curb and through a metal fence into the front lobby of the station around 2a, causing significant damage, then backed up and left the scene. The unidentified man was found by deputies and booked into French Valley jail with bail set at $10k. The Sheriff’s station closed temporarily Monday, but has since reopened. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/05/06/man-drives-into-lake-elsinore-sheriffs-station-arrested-authorities-say/
Today has already been a busy day in Sacramento beginning with a blessing at the Native American Monument by Asm. James Ramos at 9a, followed by an informational hearing by the Assembly’s Select Committee on Native American Affairs. Tonight, there will be a candlelight vigil on the west steps of the state Capitol with the dome illuminated red. It’s all in recognition of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Day. California still ranks among the highest in the nation for unresolved MMIP cases. Tomorrow, Ramos will present to the State Assembly a resolution designating May as Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Awareness Month. According to a 2023 FBI report, there were 10,650 reported incidents of Native people gone missing. Of those, 5,801 were female and 7,124 were juveniles. (Asm. James Ramos media release)
Prepare for a nine-day closure of a major freeway onramp in Temecula. Beginning this Sunday, the onramp from Temecula Parkway to northbound I-15 will be completely closed until Monday, May 19 to allow crews time to demolish and rebuild portions of the ramp to accommodate an additional lane as part of the I-15 Smart Freeway Pilot Project. The $33.5m project will use sensors and “smart” technology to continuously monitor real-time traffic conditions and adjust on-ramp signals accordingly on eight miles of non-tolled I-15 from the San Diego County line to the 215 interchange. Construction of the entire project is expected to be complete by this Fall. This follows directly on the heels of last month’s completion of the French Valley interchange project, which commuters report has already improved the evening commute through Temecula. https://patch.com/california/temecula/9-day-closure-i-15-temecula-parkway-ramp-starts-may-11

SPORTS
In the NBA playoffs – Golden State won its first semifinal game at Minnesota 99-88 but lost Steph Curry in the process. He suffered a hamstring injury in the second quarter that’s expected to keep him sidelined for at least a week. In yesterday’s other game, Indiana edged Cleveland 120-119 to take a two games to none lead. The win came thanks to a three-pointer by Tyrese Haliburton with just over one second left in the game.
Tonight, New York is at Boston and Denver is at Oklahoma City for the second game of those series.
In the NHL playoffs – Carolina needed overtime to beat the Capitals 2-1 and take the first game of Round Two. In Las Vegas, Edmonton topped the Golden Knights 4-2 for the second round Game One win. Tonight, it’s Florida at Toronto and Dallas at Winnipeg – both on ESPN.
The NHL team in Salt Lake City which went by the placeholder name Utah Hockey Club for its debut season has announced it will henceforth be known as the Utah Mammoth. Both names were among the three finalists voted on by fans. There have been Mammoth fossils found throughout the state including a complete skeleton in Huntington Canyon in 1988. The team’s rallying cry will be “Tusks Up!” https://apnews.com/article/utah-mammoth-name-nhl-31aa2fa9d1cbb825ba5e0b61815e58de
In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost their first game in the last seven, but are still only a half-game out of first place because the Dodgers lost too. The Yankees beat the Padres 12-3 in New York. The Dodgers lost 5-4 in ten innings in Miami thanks to a bases-loaded walk-off single by Jesus Sanchez. The Angels racked up only their 14th win of the season, 8-3 against the visiting Blue Jays.
Here’s something you don’t see every day – an extra innings game with a final score of 14-5. The visiting Giants set a Wrigley Field record by scoring nine runs in the 11th inning. That’s also the most in any extra innings game since the Angels scored nine in the 13th inning on August 16, 2009. You know, back when the Angels used to win. Last night was vindication for the Giants who’d committed four errors in an ugly 9-2 loss in Chicago the night before. That puts the Giandt a game behind the second-place Padres.
In Major League Soccer – San Diego plays this Saturday in Houston. The LA Galaxy are in New York to play the Red Bulls Saturday. And LAFC plays the Whitecaps in Vancouver Sunday.
In the NFL – Earlier today, the Cowboys traded with Pittsburgh to acquire wide receiver George Pickens in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. They’ll get back a 2027 sixth-round pick from Pittsburgh. Dallas had wanted Tetairoa McMillan as their 12th position first-round draft pick this year. But he went to Carolina when they picked 8th. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45036163/sources-cowboys-nearing-trade-steelers-wr-george-pickens
In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is Saturday hosting Houston.
In racing – There will be no Triple Crown winner this year. Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not be entered in the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore ten days from now.
In local high school sports:
Bonsall – no scheduled games today

Ford has raised prices on three models produced in Mexico, blaming it on tariffs in addition to the usual midyear price increase. A spokesperson said the full cost of tariffs is not being passed on to the customer. The Mustang Mach-E SUV, Maverick pickup truck, and Bronco Sport will increase by as much as $2k on vehicles built after May 2. Those vehicles will arrive on dealer lots in June. Ford is continuing its employee pricing discount program through July 4. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/ford-hikes-prices-mexico-produced-models-citing-tariffs-2025-05-07/
WeightWatchers has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company has no plans to shut down or in any way abandon its 3.4m members, but needs to deal with over a billion dollars of debt. The recent rise in popularity of weight-loss medication has taken away from WeightWatchers’ core, multifaceted approach to weight loss. In 2015, Oprah Winfrey owned a 10% share and became the public face of the company. She exited in 2024 shortly after revealing she’d been taking GLP-1 drugs for weight loss. Weightwatchers stock fell more than 56% following today’s announcement. https://www.today.com/health/news/weight-watchers-bankrupt-rcna205302
The Justice Department has requested that Google be forced to sell its Ad Exchange and a management platform as an appropriate remedy after losing its ad-tech monopoly case in federal court. Google is asking the same judge for less drastic measures that would just change certain business practices. The remedies trial begins in September. Meanwhile, the government also wants Google to sell off Chrome to settle its other recent monopoly case defeat. www.morningbrew.com

But with $4.5b cash on hand and a $2.9b loan from JPMorgan, DoorDash is buying the British-based Deliveroo food delivery service and SevenRooms, a reservation platform that works with 13k restaurants and hotel groups. Meanwhile, Uber announced yesterday it is acquiring most of a Turkish food delivery company, and Instacart has debuted an alcohol ordering app. www.morningbrew.com

Several air traffic controllers took trauma leave recently to recover from the April 28 incident in which all contact with aircraft coming in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport was lost for a minute and a half. The failure of all radar and radio communications was compounded by the busy hub airport having one of its three runways closed for construction. According to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Newark is now intentionally limiting flight traffic to ensure safety. An average of 39 flights per day have been cancelled since the incident, compared to just four per day before it. Duffy warned that other airports could experience the same problems that hobbled Newark. Aviation experts say all major air traffic control towers are short on trained workers and filled with antiquated equipment. Last week, Duffy unveiled incentives to recruit more air traffic controllers. Tomorrow, he’s expected to announce an overhaul of the nation’s air traffic control systems “from new telecom, to new radars, to new infrastructure.” www.morningbrew.com
Even if you do have a Real ID, travel experts are advising that you should arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight. If you don’t have one, you can still fly. It just might involve dealing with additional time-consuming security, depending on what other ID you’ll be using. A valid passport or passport card should get you through TSA easily. Other acceptable forms of ID include a tribal ID from a federally-recognized tribe, DHS-trusted traveler cards, a border crossing card, a permanent resident card, a Canadian driver’s license and others. Even without an acceptable ID, you can still fill out a form by which TSA will confirm your identity and allow you through to screening. But that will take longer. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification
Netflix is about to roll out a redesign for its streaming app. The new user interface begins with a huge banner suggesting programs you might want to watch, followed by collections of recommendations including “Today’s Top Picks”, “Only on Netflix”, and “Recently Added”. Shortcuts are moving from the left sidebar to a section at the top of the screen. The new UI should make it easier to find things like live content and games streamed to your TV. https://www.theverge.com/news/662407/netflix-tv-redesign-revamp-update
