White smoke coming from the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City earlier today indicated the conclave had achieved a two-thirds majority in electing a new Pope. It was decided that Robert Prevost will become Pope Leo XIV. The 69-year old from Chicago is the first American to be elected as pontiff. He replaces Pope Francis, who died April 22 at age 88. www.NYTimes.com
The 111-year old baseball field in downtown Fallbrook currently leased by the local Little League may soon become the site of an affordable housing development. North County Fire Protection District had owned the land and by law, needed to sell it to the county or a developer to raise money to build a new fire station. The county purchased the land ahead of any developer to give it control over its future. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the future of the Little League field in the next few weeks. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/fallbrook-baseball-field-dating-back-to-1914-may-become-affordable-housing/3820008/
The Carlsbad City Council this week voted to lift a 27-year old ban on new drive-thru restaurants in the city. The 3-2 decision allows new proposals to be considered on a case-by-case basis. Concerned with traffic, environmental impact, and preserving the city’s beach-town charm, the 1997 ban capped the drive-thru count at 12, with most of them near the 5 freeway. One has since closed. They’ll still be prohibited in the Village and Barrio districts of the city. https://www.newsbreak.com/san-diego-post-314653203/3996225168413-california-lifts-27-year-ban-on-new-drive-thru-restaurants-with-conditions
The city of Temecula closed down the roller hockey rink at Ronald Reagan Sports park to spend about $3m on upgrades. The city says the concrete surface was unsafe and people including junior league players were getting hurt as a result. The local league switched its games to the rink at Naggar Community Park on Margarita Road because of the hazardous conditions. The Reagan Park rink is expected to reopen in January. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/05/07/hockey-rink-at-temecula-sports-park-getting-a-nearly-3-million-update/

In the NBA playoffs – The Knicks, down by 20, pulled off another comeback to beat the Celtics in Boston 91-90. They now lead the Eastern semifinals two games to none. In Oklahoma City, the Thunder demolished the Denver Nuggets 149-106. That series is tied at a game apiece. Tonight, Golden State plays the Timberwolves in Minneapolis.
In the NHL playoffs – Toronto now leads Florida two games to none in their Eastern second round series. The Maple Leafs edged the Panthers 4-3 in Toronto last night. Dallas opened its series against the Jets with a 3-2 win in Winnipeg. Tonight, Carolina is at Washington and Edmonton is at Vegas. The visiting teams each have one win. Both games will be televised on ESPN.
The Anaheim Ducks announced today that they’ve hired Joel Quenneville as their new head coach. He’s been out of the NHL since resigning as head coach of the Panthers in 2021 in the wake of the Blackhawks sexual assault scandal back in 2010. Quenneville was Chicago’s coach at the time, where he led the team to three Stanley Cups. He and then-general manager Stan Bowman and another team executive were banned from the league. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman lifted that ban last year. Quenneville ranks second in all-time NHL regular season league wins with 969. In spite of improving by 21 points last season, the Ducks haven’t made the playoffs in seven years. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45053260/sources-ducks-tab-quenneville-return-chicago-scandal
In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost 4-3 to the Yankees in ten innings last night in New York. The Dodgers routed the Marlins in Miami 10-1. The Giants beat the Cubs 3-1 in Chicago. The Angels rallied in the bottom of the 9th to edge the visiting Blue Jays 5-4 on a double by Jorge Soler. The Padres and Giants are off today. The Dodgers open a long series at Arizona and the Angels finish their series with Toronto in Anaheim.
Following their seventh straight loss, the Pirates have fired manager Derek Shelton. Bench coach Don Kelly will take over for Shelton. The Pirates are currently in last place in the National League Central Division, ten games behind the first-place Cubs. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were soaring today. The Dow and S&P 500 were each up 1.4%. The Nasdaq gained 1.8%. Gold plunged more than 2 ½%, or $87.30 an ounce to $3,304.60 on the Comex. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained more than 3%, or $1.83 a barrel to $59.90.
As expected, the Federal Reserve yesterday held interest rates steady at 4 ¼% to 4 ½% with Fed chairman Jerome Powell saying, “We can afford to be patient as things unfold,” – primarily referring to tariffs, though he didn’t mention the word. He did use the word, “uncertainty “a lot, as White House tariffs have made finding the balance between the two elements of the Fed’s dual mandate of full employment and stable prices more difficult. Tariffs threaten to both aggravate inflation and slow economic growth – something economists call stagflation. Powell did say “The economy itself is still in solid shape.” https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/07/fed-rate-decision-may-2025.html
After hinting last night on Truth Social, the President today announced a trade deal with the United Kingdom. The U.S. will adjust 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum and lower tariffs from 25% to 10% on the first 100k vehicles sent to the U.S. from the UK. In exchange, the UK will ease trade barriers on a variety of products including ethanol, beef and machinery. The White House says the accord opens up $5b worth of trade. Details have yet to be worked out. Critics note that nothing has been signed and that overall, it’s a minor and selective agreement that still tends to upset the normal order of international trade. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/us-uk-trade-framework/story?id=121603139 https://www.ft.com/content/7e92d393-c08d-4be5-b349-403de6b70fbf
The first high-level trade talks between the U.S. and China since President Trump introduced 145% tariffs on Chinese goods and China retaliated with its own high tariffs are set for this weekend in Switzerland. The two sides are far apart and both sounding hard line going into the talks. Trump said yesterday he won’t lower tariffs in advance while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted that though current tariffs and trade barriers are unsustainable, “What we want is fair trade.” Meanwhile, China is casting the U.S. as the bully, using the words “coercion and extortion”. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/07/china-trump-tariffs-bessent-switzerland.html
Disney will open its seventh theme park, and first in the Middle East in the United Arab Emirates, noting that one third of the world’s population lives within a 4-hour flight of Abu Dhabi’s resort-filled waterfront. Disney will provide the name, creative design, and operational advice to make it a “Disney experience”, but a local company will develop and operate the park. Disney will have no ownership stake, and make no monetary investment. It will collect royalties once the park opens. Disney CEO Bob Iger says parks usually take two years to develop and about five years to build. Revenue from Disney parks grew 13% last quarter compared to a year ago. www.morningbrew.com
