LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Gov. Gavin Newsom today urged California cities to clear homeless encampments.  His administration drafted a local law that counties, cities and towns can directly adopt or modify to achieve his goal of eliminating the makeshift tents that line underpasses, parks and local streets up and down the state. Newsom will also release $3.3 billion in voter-approved funds to expand housing and treatment options for homeless Californians. https://www.kpbs.org/news/quality-of-life/2025/05/12/gov-gavin-newsom-urges-california-cities-and-counties-to-ban-homeless-encampments

The highly publicized 9-day ramp closure from Temecula Parkway to northbound I-15 still caught many commuters off-guard this morning.  It will remain closed through Sunday with a convoluted detour taking drivers into Old Town, east on Santiago Road, north on Ynez, and west on Rancho California Road to the 15, which is already an extremely congested route.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/northbound-i-15-onramp-closure-south-temecula-traffic-nightmare

Grammy-winner Jason Mraz, who’d been growing coffee beans on his ranch in Morro Hills for years is developing Oceanside’s oldest coffee shop, “Jitters” into a performance venue for emerging artists.  The shop was scheduled for closure when the owner’s lease expired last November.  But Mraz, who has patronized the shop for over two decades, stepped in to pay tribute to his coffee shop performance beginnings.  Beginning in July, Jitters will welcome auditions from musicians, DJs, poets, comedians and other performers.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/grammy-winner-jason-mraz-partners-with-oceansides-oldest-coffee-shop

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – Indiana moved to within a game of winning its Eastern semifinal series by beating the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers 129-109 yesterday.  Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell missed the second half with ankle pain.  It’s uncertain if he’ll be able to play in Game 5.  The Western semifinal between Oklahoma City and Denver is tied at 2 after the Thunder beat the Nuggets in Denver 92-87.  Tonight, the Celtics are in New York for Game Four against the Knicks, who lead two games to one.  And Golden State hosts Minnesota with the Timberwolves leading two games to one.

In the NHL playoffs – Florida shut out the visiting Maple Leafs 2-0 to even up that second round series at two games apiece.  In yesterday’s other game, Dallas whupped Winnipeg 5-2 to take a two-games to one lead.  Tonight, Carolina hosts Washington with the Hurricanes leading two games to one.  And Vegas is at Edmonton with the Oilers leading two games to one.  The Golden Knights won their game Saturday against Edmonton 4-3 with a last-second goal deflected off the stick of Oilers forward Leon Draissaitl.  With just 4 tenths of a second left on the clock, it ties the record for the latest game-winning goal in a playoff game in NHL history. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45090778/golden-knights-score-04-left-stun-oilers-game-3

In Major League Baseball – The Padres took two out of three in Denver including the biggest margin of victory ever for San Diego in Saturday’s 21-0 rout of the Rockies.  The Dodgers took two out of three in Phoenix.  The Twins swept the Giants in Minnesota.  Baltimore took two out of three from the Angels in Anaheim.  With a record that would have them in the lead in any of the other five divisions, the Padres still trail the Dodgers by one game, but are now two games ahead of the third-place Giants.   The Angels continue to bring up the rear in the AL West.

The day after the big rout in Denver, the Rockies fired manager Bud Black.  Even with yesterday’s win, the Rockies are off to a league-worst 7 and 33 start this year.  It’s the worst first-40-game record for any team in 37 years.  Third base coach Warren Schaeffer will be interim manager for the rest of the season and hitting coach Clint Hurdle will be interim bench coach since they also fired bench coach Mike Redmond.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45101213/mlb-worst-colorado-rockies-fire-manager-bud-black-win

In the NFL – The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will host Dallas to open the 2025 NFL season Thursday, September 4 on NBC.  It’s the regular-season debut for Cowboys’ head coach Brian Schottenheimer.  The Eagles won both games the two teams played against each other last season.  The full schedule for the upcoming season will be announced Wednesday. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45110559/eagles-host-cowboys-2025-nfl-season-opener

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up sharply.  The Dow gained 2.6%.  The S&P 500 was up 3.1% to a two-month high.  And the Nasdaq rose 4.2%.  Meanwhile, gold plummeted $118.50 an ounce on the Comex, trading at $3,225.50.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.19 to $62.21 a barrel.

In trade talks over the weekend in Switzerland, the US and China agreed to a 90-day pause on the sky-high tariffs recently implemented by both countries.  US trade representative Jamieson Greer said this country would roll back its 145% duty on Chinese imports to 30%, while China will lower its retaliatory rate by the same amount to 10% to allow more time to negotiate something more permanent. www.ap.com

President Trump this morning signed an executive order to institute a most-favored nation policy with pharmaceutical companies that he says could lower drug prices here by 30% to 80%.  According to Bloomberg news, although America fuels innovation and drives growth in the drug industry, Americans pay more for those drugs than any other country.  Yesterday on Truth Social, Trump said the order ensures that US consumers “will pay the same price as the Nation that pays the lowest price anywhere in the World.”  www.morningbrew.com

One day after declaring bankruptcy for the second time in eight months last week, Rite-Aid put all of its nearly 1,200 store leases up for grabs.  In a letter to customers, the pharmacy chain said the majority of stores will remain open and operating for at least the next few months.  About 47 have been targeted for closure due to underperformance and lack of buyer interest.  Deadlines in the bankruptcy this time are coming at a furious pace.  An auction for pharmacy assets is expected this week.  The rest of Rite-Aid’s assets will be sold June 20.  June 6 is the deadline for returns and use of gift cards.  https://www.foxbusiness.com/retail/rite-aid-files-bankruptcy-whats-next-its-stores https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/05/08/news/rite-aid-faces-uncertain-future-amid-bankruptcy-filing-store-closures/78789.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, the four highest grossing movies remained the same as last weekend – “Thunderbolts”, followed by “Sinners, “A Minecraft Movie”, and “The Accountant 2”.  “Clown in a Cornfield” debuted in 5th place with $3.6m worth of tickets sold.  “Shadow Force” debuted 6th with $2m.  And “Fight or Flight” opened with $2m in 7th place.  All three newcomers were showing on at least 1k fewer screens than the top four films.  The total take for the top ten films plunged more than 43% compared with last weekend.  Apparently Mother’s Day brunch was a lot more popular than taking in a movie this weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W19/

President Trump plans to accept one of the most valuable gifts ever received by the U.S. government – a $400m luxury 747 from the country of Qatar to use as Air Force One and eventually be donated to Trump’s presidential library after he leaves office.  Boeing has always provided new Air Force One aircraft and has been under contract for a new one since 2019.  But it won’t be ready until 2027.  www.reuters.com

The North American Electricity Reliability Corporation recently warned of a growing imbalance in the US power grid, putting American households at greater risk for blackouts.  An example of what they’re warning about in this country happened last week in Europe, where a major widespread blackout disrupted trains, airports and services all across Spain and Portugal.  It was caused by a generator failure and a lack of stable backup power from sources like gas and nuclear generators.  Spain currently relies 53% on solar and 11% on wind-generated energy – both of which can be intermittent sources and unreliable without sufficient baseload support.  It showed what happens when energy policy and demand outpace infrastructure.  The NERC predicts US energy demand will grow by 35% to 50% in the next 15 years, growing about 3% annually.  (NERC media release)
