The San Diego County Coroner is investigating the discovery of a body in a wooded area off Aviation Road in Fallbrook yesterday. Law enforcement reported there didn’t appear to be any trauma to the body. No further details have been released. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/05/08/news/body-found-in-one-of-the-homeless-encampments-in-fallbrook/78794.html
A hit-and-run accident on southbound I-15 near the Temecula Border Checkpoint snarled the morning commute today. Just after 5a, a white Lexus was rear-ended by another, possibly black sedan that left the scene. Another vehicle involved – a black SUV overturned and ended up on the right shoulder. CHP reports no lanes were closed. At least one person was injured and debris on the roadway plus activity on the shoulder caused delays on the southbound 15 as far back as the 215 merge for several hours. https://patch.com/california/temecula/multi-car-i-15-crash-slows-morning-commute-through-temecula
Traffic in Pala was affected yesterday afternoon by fuel truck getting stuck on rocks on Lilac Road near Highway 76. The potential for a fuel spill caused the Hazardous Materials team to respond with a full closure of Lilac Road for several hours beginning around 3p. (sigalert)
A Mother’s Day morning vehicle crash into a roadside flower stand in Valley Center left two people injured. It happened around 10:40a with a collision between a pickup truck and a Ford Flex with the SUV overturning and landing under the canopy of the flower stand in the 27400 block of Valley Center Road. Two people were taken to a hospital. https://www.newsbreak.com/abc-10-news-kgtv-563645/4003282869231-vehicle-crash-into-flower-stand-leaves-two-people-injured-in-valley-center
Oakwood Legal Group last week announced a pending lawsuit against the Fallbrook Union High School District involving the recent hazing incident on the varsity baseball team. The allegations first surfaced last month, leading to the immediate removal of five players. Two were expelled, with other three receiving one-week suspensions. Following a review of evidence, the expelled students were allowed to return to school. The alleged victim has left Fallbrook High and head coach Pat Walker no longer has that role, though he is still athletic director. The lawyer representing the defendant emphasized that the lawsuit is not targeting any students, but rather the administration for failing to protect children. A claim has been filed against the school district in preparation for a lawsuit. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/05/08/news/law-firm-announces-lawsuit-against-fallbrook-high-school-for-alleged-hazing-incident/78750.html
One of the topics at last night’s Valley Center Community Planning Group meeting was a possible endorsement of State Assembly Bill 303: the Battery Emergency Safety & Accountability Act, which would give local communities more say in the placement of battery energy storage facilities. Valley Center has several, with others proposed. There have been several battery fires at storage facilities in North County including at least one in Valley Center. Other topics at last night’s meeting included traffic at Woods Valley and Valley Center Roads, emergency evacuation, and “Dark Skies”. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/planning-group-to-vote-on-ab303/
Cal Fire’s Rincon Station 70 is currently closed for a complete rebuild. The 50-year old facility was due for replacement. A temporary Station 70 is now staffed less than a mile away at Lazy H Ranch on Highway 76. A second temporary facility, Cal Fire Station 72 at Hidden Hills Ranch on Valley Center Road opened last June. Both will serve Pauma Valley until the new permanent Station 70 is completed in 18 to 24 months. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/cal-fire-rincon-station-closes-for-rebuild/

SPORTS
In the NBA playoffs – The Knicks and Timberwolves are on the verge of winning their respective semifinal playoff series. New York beat the visiting Celtics 121-113 and Minnesota topped Golden State in San Francisco 117-110. Each now have a three-games to one lead. Tonight, Cleveland hosts Indiana for a must-win game on TNT at 4p. And Denver is at Oklahoma City with that series tied at two.
Boston’s Jason Tatum suffered a leg injury in last night’s loss to the Knicks. He’s having an MRI today. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45119605/celtics-jayson-tatum-carried-game-4-vs-knicks-right-leg-injury
The Dallas Mavericks won this year’s NBA draft lottery and will pick first on June 25. It’s a coup for a team that disappointed fans by trading away Luka Doncic to the Lakers and missed going to this year’s playoffs after making it to the finals last year. https://apnews.com/article/nba-draft-lottery-cooper-flagg-9dc3a5cffa5bf4c9b15e3222fb661c88
In the NHL playoffs – Edmonton shut out the visiting Golden Knights 3-0 and Carolina topped the visiting Capitals 5-2. Both winners now lead their respective series three-games to one. Tonight, it’s Winnipeg at Dallas with the Stars leading the series two games to one.
The league has suspended Florida Panthers minority owner Doug Cifu from any involvement with the team or the league after a series of offensive social media posts Sunday night regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a reference to Canada becoming the 51st state. The posts were an exchange with a Toronto Maple Leafs supporter going by the handle, “Dr. Grizzo”. The Panthers’ only response has been to point to an apolody statement Cifu gave to Florida Hockey Now earlier today. In addition to his part ownership of the team, Cifi is CEO of Virtu Financial and vice chairman and alternate governor of Sunrise Sports & Entertainment – the owner of the Panthers and FLA Live arena. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45128515/panthers-minority-owner-suspended-offensive-social-media-posts
In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost to the visiting Angels 9-5. Arizona edged the Giants in San Francisco 2-1. That puts both NL West teams a half-game further behind the first-place Dodgers who had yesterday off. Both series continue today and the Dodgers open a series hosting the A’s.
In Major League Soccer – Tomorrow, San Diego hosts Colorado, LAFC hosts Seattle, and the Galaxy are on the road at Philadelphia.
In the NFL – Additional parts of this season’s schedule are coming out. The Chiefs will host Denver on Christmas night. This is the third straight Christmas the Chiefs have played. The Prime Video game will be part of a Christmas triple-header. Netflix will stream the other two games, which will be announced tomorrow along with the rest of the regular season schedule. Prime Video has also announced that its Black Friday game will be the Chicago Bears playing the Eagles in Philadelphia November 28. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45117111/chiefs-host-afc-west-rival-broncos-christmas-night

In local high school sports:
Bonsall – softball at Ocean View Christian at 3:30p; baseball hosting Mountain Empire at 5p
Great Oak – no scheduled games
Fallbrook – baseball against Westview at 4p, JV hosting, varsity away
Valley Center – boys’ CIF semifinals tonight at 6p

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell a half percent. The S&P 500 gained ¾ of a percent, putting it back in positive territory for 2025. President Trump today secured a $600b commitment from Saudi Arabia to invest in the U.S. An agreement was signed in Riyadh covering energy, defense, mining and other areas of business. Trump also said that at the request of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, he would lift sanctions on Syria. The White House says the President will also meet tomorrow with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al Qaeda commander who spent five years in a U.S. prison in Iraq. It was the first day of Trump’s tour of the Middle East. Yet come are stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. https://www.reuters.com/world/trump-starts-gulf-visit-seeking-big-economic-deals-2025-05-13/
The White House announced yesterday that in addition to the temporary rollback of tariffs on Chinese imports, it will cut the tariff on de minimus shipments from China to 54%. This exception for shipments valued at less than $800 is a relief to e-commerce companies including Temu and Shein. Critics of the de minimus rule say it enables cheap imports and smuggling. https://www.reuters.com/world/china/us-cut-de-minimis-tariff-china-shipments-54-120-2025-05-13/
Yesterday’s temporary pause in the high tariffs against Chinese imports is being met with relief and a rush to buy Chinese goods before they potentially become more expensive again in 90 days. Container ships from China that began arriving half-empty or not at all at the beginning of this month are now being fully-loaded with demand for more space to set sail. With shipping being a supply and demand business, that means that while tariffs won’t be as high (they are still much higher than before the trade war began) shipping costs will now be rising substantially. Both expenses will at least partially need to be passed on to retail customers. The good news is, importers won’t be going out of business because of the prohibitive 145% duty rate – most of which is now on hold, and store shelves won’t be empty going into the holiday shopping season. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/13/nx-s1-5395866/us-china-tariffs-trade-deal
UnitedHealth Group, which has already had a rough year, abruptly replaced its CEO today. Andrew Witty resigned “for personal reasons” and was immediately replaced by the company’s former CEO and currently board chairman, Stephen J. Hemsley. Shares in UnitedHealth were down 16% by mid-morning. The huge health care conglomerate is one of the largest companies in the world. Lately, it’s been one of the most troubled. A massive cyberattack last year paralyzed its medical payment processing division, affecting about 100m patients and their health care providers. It also owns UnitedHealthcare, the largest U.S. health insurance company, whose CEO, Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan six months ago, sparking consumer backlash over high premiums and denied claims. Some now view his killer as a vigilante folk hero. An online fundraiser has collected more than $1m for his defense. But it’s the rising cost of its Medicare Advantage businesses that have hit UnitedHealth the hardest. That’s also what cost competitor, Aetna’s CEO her job in October. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/13/nx-s1-5396614/unitedhealth-group-terrible-year-replaces-ceo-andrew-witty
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
This country is getting in a rut with the naming of our children. According to the Social Security Administration, for the sixth consecutive year, the most popular name for a newborn boy is Liam with Noah coming in second, and the most popular name for a girl is Olivia with Emma the runner up. Those four names, in one order or another have been our top-two favorites since 2014. There were over 22k new Liams in 2024 and almost 15k new Olivias. Favorite names are bound to change eventually. 80 years ago, the most popular name for a girl was Mary. That name now places at #132. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2025/05/09/most-popular-baby-names-2024-girl-boy/83539625007/
Traffic roundabouts, which are touted as a safety measure are proving to have more accidents than the previous traditional intersections at some North County locations. According to an Encinitas city staff report, there were 19 accidents at the roundabout on Coast Highway at El Portal Street – about one a month from February 2023 to August 2024. Almost all of them were at night and 12 involved drivers under the influence. The Encinitas city council is asking its traffic engineers to come up with options to make that traffic circle safer – especially in light of the impending installation of more traffic circles on Coast Highway in the coming months. Unfamiliarity with roundabouts, tight turns and narrow lanes may also be contributing factors. At the circle on Highway 76 at Valley Center Road, the evidence is everywhere of vehicles running over curbs and failing to negotiate curves. www.kpbs.org
