LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Facing a $6b Medicaid shortfall, Gov. Newsom is proposing limits on free health care to undocumented immigrants beginning in 2026. There will also be charges for those already enrolled in Medi-Cal the following year. California was one of the first states to offer free health care benefits to the poor, regardless of immigration status. But the cost ran $2.7b more than expected. Today’s announcement is an about-face from a statement made by Newsom in March. Medi-Cal is state-funded and does not use federal dollars. Newsom’s office says the changes will save the state $5.4b by 2028-29. https://patch.com/california/across-ca/newsom-reverses-course-free-health-care-undocumented-immigrants

A New York appeals court reversed a lower court and ruled yesterday that Fox News can obtain records from voting technology company, Smartmatic in order to defend itself in the $2.7b civil defamation case over its claims of voting fraud during the 2020 election. The Florida-based company says its business was destroyed when Fox aired false claims that it helped rig that election, causing Donald Trump to lose the presidency. The ruling allows access to documents related to a Philippines corruption indictment alleging Smartmatic executives paid over $1m in bribes to a government official. Fox claims those documents prove Smartmatic’s business problems began long before the 2020 election. https://apnews.com/article/smartmatic-fox-defamation-lawsuit-2020-election-a00411ab1cfc7f4dc3d2c069e07a2ea7

As a result of the $95m settlement of a 2021 lawsuit over Apple’s Siri eavesdropping on private or confidential conversations, all Apple customers who “experienced an unintended Siri activation” between September 2014 through the end of 2024 are eligible to file a claim. The amount paid out will depend on how many people file, but it’s capped at $20 per Siri-enabled device. Devices involved include iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch, and Apple TV. You can file a claim for up to five devices for a maximum payout of $100. Some Apple customers received an email or postcard notifying them of the settlement and giving them an ID claim number and confirmation code. The deadline for claims is July 2. Anyone who didn’t receive notification and believes they are eligible can go to the website https://LopezVoiceAssistantSettlement.com to begin a claim. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/apple-siri-settlement-95-million-lopez-how-to-file-claim/
U.S. energy officials are concerned about the discovery of unexplained communication equipment found inside some Chinese-sourced solar inverters that are being connected to this country’s energy infrastructure. Most inverters, which are devices used to connect solar panels and wind turbines to electricity grids are made in China. They’re often designed with remote access capabilities for updates, maintenance and monitoring and typically are behind firewalls to prevent unauthorized communication. But the discovery of undocumented components opens the possibility of unauthorized people getting around firewalls to potentially create widespread blackouts. The risk was demonstrated in November when a dispute between inverter suppliers Sol-Ark and Deye led to inverters being disabled remotely from China. In February, the U.S. Senate introduced legislation to prevent the Department of Homeland Security from purchasing batteries and other electric grid equipment from six Chinese companies closely linked with the Chinese Communist Party. That ban would begin in October of 2027. https://www.technology.org/2025/05/14/hidden-communication-devices-in-chinese-power-inverters-spark-security-alarm/
