The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Riverside Sheriff’s report that three people, including a 16-year old have been arrested in connection with the shooting at Temecula and Redhawk Parkways that left two people hospitalized ten days ago.  Witnesses said a man got out of his car and shot at another vehicle before both vehicles left the area.  Deputies found evidence of the shooting at the intersection and were notified of the two victims arriving at a hospital with gunshot wounds.  Following an investigation, a 36-year old Vista man and a 37-year old woman from Pala were arrested along with the 16-year old juvenile, who is the main suspect.  The motive remains unclear and no further details were released. https://www.newsbreak.com/ktla-1589741/4008425215922-3-suspects-including-16-year-old-arrested-in-riverside-county-shooting

The Oceanside City Council has approved a downsized version of the proposed Olive Park Apartments project on 11 acres near the College Boulevard Sprinter train station.  The vote was 4-1 in favor of two four-story buildings with 100% of the 199 apartments designated as affordable housing.  The project includes 382 on-site parking spaces, a courtyard, playground, community garden and other amenities.  An additional 32 acres will be set aside as permanent open space.  The only real objection was from the neighboring 62 homes on Olive Drive, Bradley Street and Crystal Street who will now have to share the Olive Drive-College Boulevard intersection with the only entrance and exit from the new apartments.  A second access would have required a bridge over Loma Alta Creek and a new grade crossing of the train tracks, which North County Transit opposes as a safety hazard. https://thecoastnews.com/council-oks-downsized-affordable-housing-olive-park-apartments/

Now through June 1, Escondido Police are cracking down on people not wearing seat belts.  The enforcement also includes checks for proper use of child safety seats.  It’s part of a national “Click It or Ticket” campaign this month.  In 2022, 11,302 people who were not wearing seat belts died in crashes in the U.S.  842 of those deaths were in California.  The extra enforcement is funded through a federal grant administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  https://sandiegocountynews.com/local/north-county/gov-newsom-unveil-plan-to-accelerate-delta-conveyance-project/

Finally, a freeway project that actually resulted in obvious traffic improvement.  The French Valley Parkway Phase 2 project on northbound I-15 in Temecula and Murrieta is getting rave reviews from motorists and officials.  The $138.8m project, which opened April 28 lets drivers enter from the busy Winchester Road interchange onto lanes separate from the freeway until past the 215 split, eliminating merging across multiple lanes.  The two-year project included widening two bridges, creating a third, adding 1 ½ miles of auxiliary lanes and upgrading freeway onramps.  The manager of the project says there’s no way to specifically measure the improvement, but things are observably much better.  It’s even cutting down congestion on Winchester and Ynez Roads through the busy Promenade Mall retail district.  Temecula Mayor Brenden Kalfus says it’s “the largest capital project in the city’s history and represents a significant leap toward reducing travel times.”  Comments on Facebook by I-15 commuters have been overwhelmingly positive. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/05/15/new-15-freeway-lanes-in-temecula-are-getting-rave-reviews/

Pala will have two more nice days before things turn a little chilly with a chance of rain.  Another heat wave expected next week.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – Minnesota eliminated Golden State last night with a 121-110 win in Minneapolis.  The injury-depleted Warriors only won one game in the best-of-seven series.  In Boston, the Celtics beat the Knicks 127-102.  New York leads that series three games to two.  Tonight, in Denver, it’s Game Six between the Thunder and the Nuggets.  OKC leads three-games to two.

In the NHL playoffs – Edmonton topped the Golden Knights in Las Vegas 1-0 in overtime, winning that Western second round series four games to one.  The Oilers now advance to the Western finals.  In Toronto, Florida routed the Maple Leafs 6-1.  They now lead that series three games to two.  Tonight, on TNT, it’s Carolina at Washington and Dallas at Winnipeg.  Wins by Dallas and Carolina would finish those series.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the Angels 5-1.  San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and starter Randy Vasquez pitched six innings, giving up four hits – one of them a home run for Taylor Ward.  The Dodgers beat the A’s.  So, the NL West standings didn’t change.  Arizona edged San Francisco 8-7.  The only series continuing today is the Dodgers hosting the A’s.

In the NFL – Owners will vote next week on whether to allow league players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympics.  The resolution establishes rules and a structure for how players can get involved.  With the Olympics taking place in July, at worst, participating players might miss the start of training camp.  All of it is subject to negotiations with the NFL Player’s Association and Olympic entities.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and other key league officials support the resolution as promoting NFL interests. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45162503/nfl-vote-allowing-players-play-flag-2028-olympics

In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is this Saturday at Seattle.

In golf – At the PGA Championship in Charlotte, Ryan Gerard had the first-round lead through 16 at 7-under par – three strokes ahead of five golfers already in the clubhouse after Round One.  Xander Schauffele is the defending champion.  He finished round one at one over par. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed modest gains.  The Dow was up a half percent.  The S&P 500 gained 4 tenths of a percent.  And the Nasdaq rose 2 tenths.  Gold traded $37.20 higher on the Comex at $3,225.50 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $1.48 to $61.67 a barrel.

Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell says we could be entering a period of “more frequent, and potentially more persistent supply shocks” leading to shortages and inflation.  According to supply chain management company Flexport, container bookings from China to the U.S. are down 60% following a pre-tariff spike.  The Fed last week decided to hold the line on interest rates at the current 4.25% to 4.5% – a sign that it is still weighing the economic uncertainty caused by the tariff war.  Economists are expecting no change in rates again at the Fed’s next meeting in mid-June.  Inflation eased slightly last month, but is still more than a point above the Fed’s goal of 2%.  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fed-powell-trump-tariffs-supply-shocks-2025/

After a 1.7% surge in March, US consumer spending was almost flat in April.  That’s even worse than economists were expecting.  According to EY Economic Analysis, the “pre-tariff shopping spree is over.” The only bright spot in today’s report was bars and restaurants, where spending was up 1.2% from March.  Spending on health and personal care as well as apparel and sporting goods all declined in April. https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/15/economy/us-retail-sales-april

In posting strong first quarter sales today, Walmart said it will have to raise prices due to tariffs imposed by President Trump.  The nation’s largest retailer said consumers are remaining cautious and selective as tariffs threaten the low-price model that is at the core of Walmart’s success.  With tariffs on Chinese imports temporarily lowered from 145% to 30%, many retailers have feverishly resumed imports to get shelves stocked for the holidays in case the higher rate is reinstated.  Even the lower tariffs combined with increased shipping costs now that everyone is scrambling to obtain shipping space will cause most retailers to raise prices.  But at least shelves won’t go empty.  Walmart expects sales growth in the second quarter of 3 ½% to 4 ½% thanks to two thirds of its merchandise being sourced from within the U.S. – mostly groceries, which account for 60% of its business.  Because of the current chaotic trade environment, like many other large companies, Walmart did not issue a profit outlook for Q2. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/walmart-will-raise-prices-due-to-tariff-costs#:~:text=NEW%20YORK%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20Walmart’s,implemented%20by%20President%20Donald%20Trump.&text=The%20nation’s%20largest%20retailers%20posted,percent%20in%20the%20second%20quarter.

The Boeing 747 being offered to President Trump by Qatar as a temporary Air Force One may come with some strings.  Aviation experts and industry sources say the aircraft may need significant and costly upgrades for security.  Otherwise it might be restricted to flying within the United States and only with fighter jet escorts.  A new Air Force One 747 being custom-built by Boeing is expected to be ready in 2027. https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/trumps-qatari-747-may-need-fighter-escorts-serve-air-force-one-2025-05-15/

The college freshmen from ChatGPT’s first year on the market will become seniors this year.  While 90% of students surveyed in January of that first year said they were already using ChatGPT for help with their homework, educators held out.  But the New York Times reported yesterday that last year’s 18% of college instructors who say they are frequent generative AI users has nearly doubled this year.  Even though many still believe it compromises academic integrity, they’re using it anyway, opening the possibility for higher education to become little more than bots talking to bots.  Sites including Rate My Professors are now full of complaints that educators are using AI to write course material and give grades.  Complaining students call it hypocritical and a waste of their tuition.  But then, there are also students who complained about an NYU professor who worded assignments so that AI models would fail to answer them, foiling any plans to use ChatGPT to complete their assignments.  Unless more educators take that stance, or until the greater issue of AI at the college level is figured out, we run the risk of graduating people completely unqualified in their major, whose only real knowledge is how to use ChatGPT.  www.morningbrew.com
