San Diego County supervisors are voting today to strengthen an unsafe camping ordinance covering unincorporated parts of the county. The goal is to prevent wildfires originating in homeless encampments. Today’s vote is a second reading of the proposal. This updates an ordinance which has been in effect since 1968. If approved today, it would prohibit encampments that endanger community safety on public property, or damage public property or structures, and ban anyone from using combustible ignition or fire sources, maintain an open fire, or discard lit materials. It allows for citations but does not make prohibited activity a criminal offense. According to the San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team, homeless encampments were the cause of three San Diego fires over the past six months – the Center Fire and those in La Jolla and Mission Valley. https://www.kpbs.org/news/politics/2025/05/20/san-diego-county-supervisors-to-consider-updated-camping-ordinance

Home Depot bucked the retail trend by announcing today it will not raise prices because of tariffs. However, some product choices may disappear from stores if the extra import costs make them not worth it. Today’s earnings call for Home Depot came just days after Walmart warned that Trump’s tariffs will push the world’s largest retailer to increase its retail prices on imported goods. Home Depot has been working to get its suppliers to diversify where they source items from ever since Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese products during his first term of office. By the middle of next year, Home Depots expect to purchase no more than 10% of what they sell from any single foreign country. Oh, and they missed their earnings forecast – main reason for today’s call, causing their stock to dip. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/20/nx-s1-5404662/home-depot-tariffs-prices-product-lines
Elon Musk said today that he plans to continue leading Tesla for at least another five years and will donate less to political causes. That seemed to appease investors, who sent Tesla stock higher today. www.cnn.com/business

The average in Riverside County is $4.66 and the nationwide average today is $3.16. Today’s lowest local price is $3.99 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center. There could be a House of Representatives vote as soon as Thursday on President Trump’s “big beautiful” tax and spending bill. To advance it to the full House, the House Budget Committee made some changes to appease hardline conservative Republicans who’d promised to join Democrats in voting against it. As of yesterday, the bill included nearly $4 trillion in tax cuts. It would make the lower tax rates that went into effect for individuals during the first Trump administration permanent. They were going to expire this year. The bill also temporarily eliminates taxes on overtime pay and tips. Things that might still cause the bill to fail include the potential for the tax cuts to raise the national debt another $5 trillion dollars over the next decade, weakening the U.S. dollar in the world market. Remember that Moody’s cited rising debt as the reason for downgrading the US’ credit rating over the weekend. Also, over 100 groups are pushing back on the provision that would prevent states from regulating AI tech for ten years. And blue state Republicans are threatening to vote against the bill if state and local tax (SALT) deductions aren’t increased. The current version of the bill would triple the SALT deduction to $30k for joint filers making up to $400k per year. Trump today said he’s against raising the cap because it would “benefit Democratic governors” including California’s Gov. Newsom, even though he’d campaigned in favor of it. According to analysis by the Tax Foundation, families in the top 40% of earners to the top 5% would see their taxes go down under the proposed $30k cap, while those earning more would have a slight tax increase. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/2025052085/trump-sours-on-lifting-salt-cap-calling-it-a-gift-to-democratic-governors
The U.S. Senate plans to vote this week on a challenge to California’s electric vehicle mandate. Auto makers are concerned about reduced vehicle sales due to the mandate that all new vehicles be electric or some other form of zero-emissions by 2035. Eleven other states have adopted the California standard, affecting 40% of the U.S. auto market. Democrats argue that such a vote violates rules, while the General Accounting Office says waivers can’t be repealed. Meanwhile, the Transportation Department plans to challenge Biden administration fuel economy rules. https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/us-senate-vote-this-week-bill-bar-california-2035-ev-plan-2025-05-20/
