LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A Cessna 550 light plane crashed into a mostly military housing neighborhood in Tierra Santa this morning before dawn. Residents near the intersection of Sculpin Street and Santo Road across from the Armed Forces YMCA reported hearing an explosion just before 4a. One home was heavily damaged and at least 15 homes were affected by debris and fuel. Numerous vehicles were damaged or destroyed. Fuel and debris were scattered over a wide area. There were evacuations and a number of street closures. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. Preliminary reports say dense fog may have contributed to the accident midway between Admiral Baker golf course and I-15 on the approach to Montgomery Field in Kearny Mesa. There are high power transmission lines in the plane’s path just before the crash site. It’s believed at least two people on board the plane died in the crash. No one on the ground was seriously injured, though one was taken to a hospital. An evacuation center was set up at Miller Elementary School on Shields Street. https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/small-plane-crashes-in-san-diego-neighborhood-police

In the NBA playoffs – Indiana won the first Eastern final game 138-135 in overtime last night in New York. Trailing by 14 points with less than three minutes left in regulation play, the Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton sank a jump shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. The shot was taken close to the 3-point line, but ruled a two-pointer. Haliburton at first thought they’d won the game on a three-point goal. Tonight, it’s Game Two for Minnesota at Oklahoma City. The Thunder won the first game. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45262270/haliburton-wild-shot-keys-pacers-stunning-game-1-comeback

In Major League Baseball – The Padres are really stinking lately. They suffered a 14-0 rout by the Blue Jays last night with today’s chance to avoid a sweep already underway in Toronto. Both Toronto losses have been shutouts. San Diego currently has the current longest losing streak in the Majors at five games. Meanwhile, the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 3-1. The Giants lost 8-4 to Kansas City. And the Angels thumped the A’s in Sacramento 10-5. That series concludes this afternoon with a possible four-game sweep at stake for the Angels, who’ve won their last six games and pulled themselves out of the AL West cellar. They’re now two games ahead of the A’s and five games behind the first-place Mariners.
In Major League Soccer – San Diego’s next game is Saturday hosting the LA Galaxy. LAFC is at Montreal on Saturday.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gained back some of yesterday’s losses. The Dow and S&P 500 were each up a third of a percent. The Nasdaq gained ¾ of a percent. Gold fell $22.40 to $3,291.10 an ounce on the Comex. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures dropped 61 cents to $60.96 a barrel.
Target reported yet another earnings miss yesterday and changed its full-year outlook from positive to negative, mentioning backlash to its DEI rollbacks combined with economic factors that are causing grief for the entire big box retail sector. Target’s Q1 sales declined 3% from one year ago and the average checkout total fell 1.4%. During the previous earnings call, Target had predicted 1% sales growth for this year. It now says there will be a “low-single-digit” decline. If so, this will be Target’s third straight year of sales declines, which have already caused its stock to drop by 40%. Despite the challenging retail environment, other large chains including Walmart and Home Depot reported revenue gains for the first quarter and expect their full-year sales to increase. Even Lowe’s, which reported declining sales, believes it’ll finish the year with a gain. Target’s problems may be tied to its having been more on board with DEI initiatives than other chains before it buckled to political pressure on the issue, and the fact that it relies more on discretionary purchases than many other chains. www.morningbrew.com
Oregon-based Nike has announced it is increasing prices on some items by 7% as part of a normal seasonal pricing adjustment. Footwear priced between $100 and $150 will increase by $5. Items over $150 will increase by up to $10. Apparel prices will increase by $2 to $10. Prices for Nike Air Force – it’s best-selling shoe, will remain at $115. Children’s footwear, products under $100, and Jordan apparel and accessories will also not increase in price. Nike will also begin direct sales on Amazon for the first time in six years. German-based Adidas hinted earlier this month that it would increase prices in the U.S. market if tariffs remain in place.

After an all-night session, the U.S. Senate voted this morning by the slimmest of margins to pass the so-called “big, beautiful bill” that is central to the Republican agenda. The vote was 215-214 with Democrats staunchly opposed and enough Republicans willing to go along that it now goes to the Senate for consideration. The bill extends tax breaks from 2017 that were set to expire, while adding new ones including no taxes on tips, overtime pay, car loan interest and other items, and raises the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions to $30k from the current $10k. To make up for some of the lost revenue, there would be changes to the Medicaid and food stamps program. The biggest change is the addition of work requirements for beneficiaries of those programs. It also rolls back green energy tax breaks from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and adds $350b in new spending, with most of it going to the Pentagon, and for mass deportations and border security. www.apnews.com
The U.S. has officially accepted the luxury Boeing 747 that Qatar promised to President Trump. The Air Force will now begin the complicated process of outfitting it to serve as Air Force One. Senate Democrats say accepting without congressional approval one of the most expensive gifts ever offered to a president is unconstitutional. Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer calls the plane “the largest foreign bribe in modern history.” Though it will officially belong to the U.S., Trump has already tagged it to become part of his presidential library after he leaves office. www.nytimes.com
Against the advice of the Senate’s parliamentarian, the Senate today voted 51 to 44 to overturn the waiver that allows California to set its own air pollution standards that are stricter than national regulations. It’s one of the few times the Senate has ever overruled its parliamentarian in the 90-year history of the non-partisan staff role. The Senate has yet to vote on revoking two other waivers related to heavy-duty trucks in California. The House has already approved three resolutions to revoke the waivers. All of the waivers allowed California to legislate the end of gas and diesel-engine vehicle sales in the state by 2035. Critics in the Senate says this precedent of using the Congressional Review Act to revoke federal waivers could lead to the Trump administration using the process to repeal any state policies it doesn’t like with a simple majority vote in Congress. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/22/nx-s1-5387729/senate-california-ev-air-pollution-waiver-revoked
