LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The Norco man accused of starting the Line Fire in the San Bernardino Mountains September 5 was found guilty yesterday on seven counts. The massive fire caused the evacuation of thousands of people in the middle of red-flag conditions. An investigation at site of origin near Baseline and Alpine Streets in Highland led authorities to arrest Justin Halstenberg September 10. Five structures were damaged or destroyed. According to the U.S. Census, the population of California increased last year. It was especially noticeable in the Inland Empire, where Temecula’s population grew by about 1k to 112,431. Menifee had the largest increase – 3%. Perris grew by just over 2%. Nationwide, 12 of the 15 cities with the highest numeric gains in population were in the South or West. Los Angeles was one of the top gainers for the first time since 2016. It added 31k people, good for third place nationally. California’s population grew to over 39.5m. In the NBA playoffs – Oklahoma City now leads the Western finals two games to none. They beat the visiting Timberwolves 118-103 last night. NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 38 for the Thunder. Tonight, the Eastern final features Indiana at New York with the Pacers up one game to none.
In the NHL playoffs – Florida won its second game against the Hurricanes in Raleigh with a 5-0 shutout. Game 3 will be Saturday in Florida. Tonight, Edmonton is at Dallas with the Stars leading one game to none.
In Major League Baseball – The Padres are sinking fast. They lost their sixth in a row as Toronto swept the series with an eleven inning 7-6 decision. Nathan Lukes hit the game-winning RBI single. Dodgers and Giants had the day off. The Angels completed a sweep of the A’s in Sacramento 10-5. Tonight, the Padres are in Atlanta with the Braves activating former MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. from the disabled list. He hasn’t pitched anything but rehab games since injuring his left ACL just a couple days short of one year ago. The Dodgers begin a series with the Mets in New York. The Giants are at Washington. In Major League Soccer – San Diego’s next game is tomorrow hosting the LA Galaxy. LAFC is at Montreal tomorrow.
In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is tonight in Miami.

In high school sports – Fallbrook won its first-ever boys’ volleyball CIF championship by defeated Division IV rival Francis Parker May 17. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down on all three major U.S. indexes. The Dow and S&P 500 each fell more than a half percent. The Nasdaq was down ¾ of a percent. Gold shot up $65 on the Comex to $3,360 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures wer up 20 cents at $61.40 a barrel.
Just when things we’re feeling a little less chaotic on the tariff front, President Trump posted on social media that he would seek a 50% tariff on the European Union beginning June 1 as a result of stalled trade negotiations. Once again, stocks fell across the board as a result of the reignited trade war. The EU tariff announcement came just 30 minutes after Trump threatened Apple with a 25% tariff if it doesn’t manufacture its iPhones in the U.S. One market analyst says iPhones could triple in price to as much as $3,500 if they were made in the U.S. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/23/trump-recommends-50percent-tariff-on-european-union-starting-june-1.html
A federal judge has blocked the President from barring international student enrollments at Harvard. According the UK Home Office, a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship between January and March of this year. They’d already soared in the 4th quarter of 2024, which coincided with Trump’s reelection and set a new record. More than 5,500 Americans were granted British citizenship in 2024. Most cited begin unhappy with the U.S. political climate and the handling of the pandemic. Disney is releasing a live-action/CGI remake of the 2002 animated movie, “Lilo and Stitch”. Paul Rudd and Kate Mara star in the R-rated comedy “Friendship”. - 1960, The Everly Brothers began the first of five weeks at #1 with “Cathy’s Clown”.
- In 1964, just three months after the Beatles arrival in America, Ella Fitzgerald became the first artist to have a hit covering one of their songs – Ella’s “Can’t Buy Me Love” entered the British charts just as The Beatles’ version was #1 in America.
- In 1970, Paul McCartney’s debut solo album began three weeks at #1. Other than contributions from wife Linda, Paul performed and recorded the entire album himself. On the same day, the Beatles 12th and final studio album, “Let It Be” began three weeks at #1 on the British charts.
- In 1973, Jefferson Airplane were prevented from giving a free concert at Golden Gate Park in their hometown of San Francisco when the city passed a resolution banning electronic instruments in the park. The later iteration of the group, by then called Starship wrote “We Built This City” about that ban.
- In 1979, Tom Petty filed for bankruptcy due to a dispute with his record company which lasted years.
- In 1982, the British Musicians Union moved to ban synthesizers and drum rhythm machines from sessions and live concerts fearing they would put performers out of work.
- In 1987, a dozen former members of the Doobie Brothers reunited at the Hollywood Bowl for a concert benefitting Vietnam veterans, 2k of whom attended for free. $350k was raised.
- In 2014, the parents of a camera assistant who was killed after being hit by a train while shooting footage for a Gregg Allman biopic sued the musician and the film’s producers. The family alleged the filmmaker selected an unreasonably dangerous site for filming and failed to take adequate precautions to protect the crew. Allman was dropped from the suit later that year, then turned around and also sued filmmakers for the tragedy.
- In 2000, Eminem released his groundbreaking third album, “The Marshall Mathers LP”. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart and stayed there for eight weeks. It contains the rapper’s first top ten hit, “The Real Slim Shady”.
