LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Fire broke out in Pala late Friday afternoon just east of the shooting range on Henderson Road.  It was first reported at 5:45p.  Rez Radio began live on the air updates shortly after 6p and began sharing photos and Cal Fire updates on Facebook after 7p.  Moving in a mostly northeasterly direction, away from most structures, the #HendersonFire eventually burned 256 acres.  Evacuations for much of Pala affecting about 900 people in Pala and Rancho Heights were issued early Friday evening.  The southeastern portion of Pechanga and northern portion of Pauma reservations were under an evacuation warning.  Crews working on the ground and in the air all night achieved a small amount of containment by sunrise Saturday.  The fire had been controlled to the point that evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings by Saturday evening.  They were lifted entirely late yesterday.  The fire is now listed as “patrol status”, where firefighters continue to monitor hot spots, mitigate hazards and control lines.  One structure was burned.  It was apparently an unoccupied recreational vehicle in the 37500 block of Magee Road.  There were no reported injuries.  The cause is under investigation.  Cal Fire has posted a number of photos.  Here’s the link.

Another fire Friday afternoon was averted shortly after noon.  A black pickup truck caught fire on the right shoulder of westbound Highway 76 near Gird Road.  The truck was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived and brush near the San Luis Rey River was beginning to catch fire.  It was controlled a few minutes later, though it did try to flare up again an hour later just before 1:30p.  No injuries reported. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/05/29/news/vehicle-fire-sparks-brush-concern-near-sr-76-and-gird-road/78957.html

A weekend gun safety event at the San Marcos Sheriff’s substation netted 144 firearms Saturday.  Those who turned in a handgun, rifle or shotgun got a $100 gift card.  $200 for an assault weapon.  The county will process all weapons with those found to be associated with a crime forwarded to the appropriate agency.  Those reported as stolen will have the owners notified.  All others will be destroyed. https://www.newsbreak.com/times-of-san-diego-555715/4033329269533-sheriff-s-gun-safety-event-over-weekend-nets-144-firearms

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – the Division finals ended Saturday as the Pacers beat the Knicks 125-108 in New York, taking the Eastern series four games to two.  That sets up the championship series beginning Thursday in Oklahoma City with the Thunder hosting the Pacers.  It’ll be televised on ABC.

In the NHL playoffs – the Stanley Cup series begins Wednesday with Florida at Edmonton.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres took two out of three from the visiting Pirates over the weekend, only losing Saturday in a 5-0 shutout.  The Dodgers took two out of three from the visiting Yankees including an 18-2 rout Saturday.  And San Francisco took two out of three in Miami.  So, the standings in the NL West haven’t changed.  The Angels lost two out of three in Cleveland.

Padres left fielder Gavin Sheets left yesterday’s game after crashing face-first into the padded wall chasing a fly ball off Adam Frazier’s bat.  The ball bounced off the top of the wall into the crowd, giving Pittsburgh a 4-1 lead.  Sheets was on the ground for several minutes before being walked off the field by a trainer.  He’s going through concussion protocol.  He had possible injuries his wrist and thumb as well as a sore hip. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45426576/padres-gavin-sheets-exits-colliding-face-first-wall

The Rockies are busy setting records.  Their 9 and 50 start this season is the worst for any team since 1901.  In 20 series so far this year, they’ve been swept ten times. They’re currently riding an eight-game losing streak. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45425736/rockies-swept-again-3rd-fastest-50-losses-mlb-history

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow fell a half percent.  The S&P 500 was down a small fraction.  And the Nasdaq gained a third of a percent.  Gold shot up 2 ½% on the Comex – up $82.80 to $3,398.20 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $2.14 to $62.93 a barrel.

At Friday’s rally in Pittsburgh to celebrate the new “partnership” between US Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel, which is in fact a takeover by Nippon, President Trump announced he would double the current tariff on imported steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% on June 4.  Canada is the US’ largest supplier of the metals. Three weeks ago, the UK became the first nation to secure a trade deal with the United States, which supposedly included a provision for no tariffs on steel and aluminum.  According to the BBC, that agreement was never signed.  While the doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs may be good for national security and jobs creation, it could mean supply chain disruption, higher costs for heavy users of the metals like auto makers, and higher costs for consumers since no cost-effective domestic plants are currently sitting idle.  New plants take time to build, and reactivated inefficient ones would produce at a higher cost.  Then of course, there’s the likelihood that the newly-announced tariffs are just another negotiating ploy.  www.morningbrew.com

Stock in Campbell’s Soup Company is up even though the broader equities market is down.  The food giant said its recently-acquired Rao’s premium sauces, Chunky, Pacific Foods organic, and Homestyle soup brands all gained market share in the last quarter.  They attribute it to people eating at home more now than at any time since early 2020 when they had no choice.  This time it’s to save money in the face of economic uncertainty.  Because of that, Campbell’s snack division isn’t doing as well and reported a “mixed” performance in the last quarter with sales down 8%, while the Food & Beverage division reported a 15% increase in revenue. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/2025060286/people-are-dining-out-less-thats-a-boost-to-the-campbells-meals-at-home-business

Mondelez, the maker of Nabisco and other popular snacks filed suit against Aldi supermarkets last week, alleging the discount chain is marketing products whose packaging “blatantly copies” that of Oreo, Chips Ahoy and others.  Mondelez says it has contacted Aldi with these objections numerous times and demanded it cease and desist.  The snack maker is seeking monetary damages and a court order to stop the alleged trademark infringement. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2025/05/30/aldi-sued-packaging-oreo-maker-mondelez-trademark-infringement/83945131007/

Booking site, Thrifty Traveler reports that the three largest air passenger carriers in this country, American, United, and Delta Airlines often charge more for those traveling alone.  In some cases, up to 50% more.  It’s not consistent across all flights, but according to Thrifty, it’s an undeniable trend.  After the report came out, Delta and United quietly changed their pricing, now charging solo passengers the same as those traveling in a group of two or more.  As of last Friday, American was still sticking to its charge-more-for singles policy. www.morningbrew.com
