LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Full Metrolink and Amtrak Surfliner passenger rail service through southern Orange County will resume this Saturday following repairs to landslide-vulnerable areas along the beachside tracks in San Clemente.  The tracks there have been closed since April 28.  Crews placed about 5,900 tons of large boulders, or riprap alongside tracks below unstable cliffs.  Temporary concrete barriers have been installed to create a safe workspace for longer-term construction of a 1,400 foot catchment on the inland side of the tracks.  For the past month and a half, passenger service ended at the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo station to the north and Oceanside to the south.  Bus service has bridged the two locations for the past month and a half.   Current emergency work estimated at $10m is just one phase of a larger package of coastal resiliency projects that could cost upwards of $300m. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/rail-service-to-orange-county-and-los-angeles-to-resume/509-5b7b1e97-3cb6-45f5-b5ce-0f531745798f

A new report by Construction Coverage has the San Diego to Carlsbad metro ranked as the third worst area for a first-time homebuyer to find a starter home among the 50 biggest metropolitan areas in the country.  63% of homes in San Diego, Chula Vista and Carlsbad are considered starter-size.  The median price is $825k.  Monthly payments on such a house would require 66% of the median income in the area.  San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara in the southern Bay Area was the worst area on the list with a starter home there going for a median of $1.4m and payments consuming 79% of the median income.  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was the most affordable metro with starter homes priced at $191k, requiring payments totaling 28% of median income.  https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/san-diego-on-list-of-worst-cities-to-find-a-starter-home/509-9e6e469a-9b82-4ffc-8218-776e89151ffc

The S&P 500 rose three fourths of a percent.  The Nasdaq was up 1.1%.  Gold fell $23.20 on the Comex, trading at $3,373.90 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.06 to $63.58 a barrel.

The Trump administration yesterday asked a federal appeals court to block last week’s order that found sweeping tariffs were “unlawful” and relied on an incorrect interpretation of Congressional acts cited for their “emergency” use.  Last week’s decision was the result of a lawsuit filed by two children’s toy companies.  It came less than a day after a panel of judges on the Court of International Trade came to the same conclusion about the unlawfulness of tariffs.  https://abcnews.go.com/US/trump-administration-appeals-2nd-ruling-blocking-tariffs/story?id=122422405

Dollar General is one of the few retailers that is upgrading, rather than lowering its financial forecast for the rest of 2025.  Sales at the discount retailer were up 2.4% from February through April compared to one year ago.  In yesterday’s quarterly report, Dollar General says that’s due to shoppers trading down from more expensive stores.  Historically, dollar stores thrive in tough economic times.  Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos told investors that they might have to raise prices because of tariffs, but only as a last resort.  They plan to pressure suppliers to eat some cost increases, find cheaper substitutes, and shift manufacturing locations to manager tariff impacts.  One fourth of Dollar General shoppers say they have less income this year.  About two thirds say they plan to cut back spending – even on necessities in the year ahead.  Shares in Dollar General were up 12% this morning.  Stock in competitors Five Below and Dollar Tree also saw gains today.  Both of them will report quarterly earnings tomorrow. https://www.npr.org/2025/06/03/nx-s1-5422266/dollar-general-earnings-prices-tariffs

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

McDonalds confirmed today that Snack Wraps will be coming back to its restaurants as a permanent part of the menu on July 10.  The item is one of McDonalds new McCrispy chicken strips with shredded lettuce and shredded cheese wrapped in a soft tortilla.  It’ll be available in two flavors – spicy or ranch.  The Snack Wrap first appeared in 2006 and was phased out in 2016.  Popeye’s announced a similar addition to its menu yesterday.  It, along with a lineup of blueberry Lemonade and tea chilled and frozen beverages are available beginning today for a limited time. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2025/06/03/mcdonalds-snack-wraps-coming-back-when/84007826007/

A large portion of young people feel like they are not on solid financial footing.  Yet, statistics shows Gen Z adults – those born between 1997 and 2007 actually earn more than previous generations did at their age.  It’s called money dysmorphia.  The median 25-year old currently earns between $42k and $50k a year.  Adjusted for inflation, baby boomers earned less than two thirds that much at age 25.  The problem for Gen Z’ers is a combination of things, like getting used to things the way they are so that they no longer seem special, and putting too much stock in things they see on social media.  If you see others posting fabulous vacations – half of which isn’t an accurate representation, you compare that to your situation and it affects you negatively.  It’s a case of expectations rising faster than reality.  How circumstances really are doesn’t even figure into it.  Regardless of whether times are good or bad, how you feel about them has less to do with how they are than how you think they are based on following certain people on social media or reality TV shows that make you feel you’re not achieving as much. https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1253522956

On this day in music history – June 3,

  • 1953, Elvis Presley graduated from J.C. Hulmes High in Memphis.  He was the first member of his family to graduate from high school.
  • In 1964, Ringo Starr came down with tonsillitis just days before The Beatles were to begin a world tour.  A last-minute call to producer George Martin resulted in session drummer Jimmy Nichol doing a quick rehearsal of six songs with the other three band members and filling in for Ringo as a Beatle for eleven days.
  • In 1967, Aretha Franklin hit #1 with her version of Otis Redding’s hit “Respect”.  On the same day, the Doors released “Light My Fire” which went to #1 two months later, at which point the group was booked on The Ed Sullivan Show with the provision that a perceived drug reference from the lyric “Girl, we couldn’t get much higher” be changed.  It was in the rehearsal, but Jim Morrison went ahead and sang the original lyric in the live performance, resulting in the band being banned from future performances on the show.
  • One word (well, a hyphenated word) was also the issue on this day in 1970 when the Kinks’ Ray Davies had to make a 6k mile round trip from New York to London to change the word “Coca-Cola” to “cherry cola” in the band’s upcoming single “Lola” due to an advertising ban in music played on the BBC.
  • In 1977, Bob Marley & the Wailers released their album “Exodus” featuring the hits “Jamming”, “Three Little Birds” and “One Love”.  It was their most popular and successful album.
  • In 2002, Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Brian Wilson, Cliff Richard, Ozzy Osbourne, and others appeared at Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace.
  • In 2003, Barry Manilow suffered a broken nose after walking into a wall at his Palm Springs home.  He knocked himself unconscious for four hours, but suffered no lasting effects.
  • In 2011, singer-songwriter Andrew Gold died in his sleep from a heart attack at age 59.

Born on this day …

  • In 1939, Ian Hunter, lead singer with Mott the Hoople.
  • In 1942, singer, songwriter, musician and producer Curtis Mayfield, former member of The Impressions.
  • In 1943, Michael Clarke, drummer with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers.
  • In 1947, Dave Alexander, the original bass players with The Stooges. He was fired from the band in 1970 after showing up for a gig too drunk to play.
  • In 1951, Denice Williams who in addition to her own solo hits, sang with Stevie Wonder’s backup group Wonderlove.
  • In 1961, El Debarge from the family group DeBarge.
