Two juveniles were transported to a hospital after a traffic collision involving two vehicles this morning in Fallbrook.  One vehicle had a mother and two children inside. The accident was reported just before 7:40a on South Mission Road near Sterling Bridge.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/05/29/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spantwo-juveniles-transported-after-crash-on-south-mission/78978.html

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors yesterday unanimously approved the purchase of historic Zeke Weaver ballfield in Fallbrook from the North County Fire Protection District with the intent of developing the three acres into affordable housing.  Several people spoke by phone at yesterday’s board meeting to oppose that development.  Local District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond says he’ll bring an agenda item forward to explore options for more parkland and additional ballfields.  According to the current tenant, the Bonsall Fallbrook Little League, the county could take the land early through a 60-day notice before the current five-year lease expires.  It seems highly unlikely the 90-year old ballfield will be preserved.   https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/county-oks-purchase-of-historic-fallbrook-ballfield-to-build-affordable-housing/3839576/

The Oceanside planning commission yesterday green-lighted a development for 35 homes on 4 ½ acres of land near where I-5 and the 78 freeway meet.  The proposed Pacific Lagoon project overlooks Buena Vista Lagoon.  Neighbors on Kelly Street, which would be the only access to the development say 35 is too many homes for such a small area.  Six of the homes would be dedicated to low to middle-income families at between $200k to $500k each.  The rest of the two and three-story homes would sell at market value – around $1m each.  The full city council will consider the project at its June 18 meeting. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/oceanside-housing-plan-community-concerns/3839790/

According to a UCSD study published yesterday, the vast majority of freshwater fish caught in Southern California contain parasites capable of infecting humans and causing health problems.  All the Trematodes – a type of flatworm, were introduced to local fish from other parts of the world.  The good news is that proper food handling will prevent illness.  Fully cooking or freezing for at least a week any local game fish intended to be eaten raw will kill the parasites.  UCSD researchers in 2023 examined 84 fish from seven different species caught at five popular San Diego County fishing locations.  93% of all fish were infected with one species of parasite.  A second species was found in 91% of the fish from two of the five locations studied.  There have yet to be any reported cases of illness from the parasites.  Such illness is common in Southeast Asia.  But nobody is currently actively looking for such cases here and doctors aren’t required to report them. https://www.kpbs.org/news/environment/2025/06/03/vast-majority-of-freshwater-fish-caught-in-san-diego-county-contain-parasites

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed modest gains.  The Dow was up a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 gained a quarter percent.  And the Nasdaq was up a third.  Comex gold was up as well by $21.90 an ounce at $3,399.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 70 cents to $62.71 a barrel.

New data from ADP indicates the job market is cooling.  Private sector hiring rose by just 37k jobs in May, the lowest in more than two years.  It was 60k in April.  The May number is far below the Dow Jones forecast of 110k.  Pay for those jobs however continues to increase at a 4 ½% annual rate – same as in April.  President Trump says Fed chairman Jerome Powell should lower interest rates immediately based on the ADP report.  The more closely-watched Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers for May will be released Friday.  They’re expected to show a gain of 125k jobs and a steady unemployment rate of 4.2%.  The two reports are known to sometimes differ greatly. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/04/adp-jobs-report-may-2025-.html

The independent watchdog agency, the Congressional Budget Office says Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” will add $2.4 trillion to the federal budget over ten years.  Although it would cut federal spending by $1.3 trillion, its tax cuts would create a $3.7 trillion drop in revenue.  Many Republican lawmakers are siding with Elon Musk, former head of the government-slashing Department of Government Efficiency, who called the bill a “disgusting abomination”.  Republican Sen. Ron Johnson from Wisconsin called it “immoral”.   https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/04/trump-tax-bill-debt.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

President Trump took another step towards defunding public broadcasting yesterday, asking Congress to take back the $1.1b it has set aside for public broadcast stations for the next two years.  The “rescission request” needs only a simple majority vote within 45 days for it to become law.  At a House subcommittee hearing earlier this spring, Republican lawmakers accused National Public Radio and PBS of partisan bias.  That claim is their reason for wanting to eliminate federal funding that is funneled through those agencies to local stations and the public media networks.  PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger says Trump’s proposal would devastate public broadcasting stations, especially those in rural communities. The cuts in public broadcast funding are part of a larger $9.4b White House package of proposed takebacks including funding for foreign aid.  Support for the cuts is split mostly along partisan lines.  Democrats defend the funding and say Trump is going after PBS and NPR to settle political scores and muzzle the free press.  Though many Republicans believe public broadcasting has become radical and left-wing, others say it provides vital services and that, combined with the other contentious funding takebacks in the proposed package, defunding it might not be something they can support when it comes to the final vote.  The Corporation for Public Broadcasting administers federal funds for NPR and PBS. Trump had previously sought to take control of CPB  by firing three of its five board members.  That move is still hung up in court.  Full disclosure – Rez Radio does not receive any direct federal funding.  However, some network and syndicated shows we carry do.   https://www.npr.org/2025/06/03/nx-s1-5418080/pbs-npr-trump-rescission-public-broadcasting
