LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The San Diego Medical Examiners’ office has determined that the death of a 9-year old dental patient after anesthesia two months ago was an accident as a result of a rare blood disorder that affects how red blood cells deliver oxygen. A dangerous condition from the disorder can be brought on by certain medications – in this case, nitrous oxide administered by an anesthesiologist. Silvanna Moreno had a three-hour root canal and multiple tooth extraction procedure on March 18 at Dreamtime Dentistry in Vista. Everything went well and she was awake when released to her mother. Silvanna fell asleep on the way home and remained asleep throughout the day with family members checking on her. They later found her unresponsive and called 911. Dr. Ryan Watkins, the anesthesiologist says the girl never showed any symptoms. Watkins had previously been investigated by the state Dental Board in the near-death of a 54-year old patient nine years ago. He’d been on probation for that incident from 2020 to 2023. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/9-year-old-san-diego-girls-death-dental-procedure-ruled-accident-rcna209946

The Labor Department jobs report for May is out. It shows the U.S. economy added 139k new jobs – slightly more than expected. It’s still a slowdown from April. Unemployment remains near historic lows at 4.2%. Altogether, today’s report shows a mostly steady but weakening labor market. The ratio of employed workers to the total population fell to 59.7% – the lowest since the pandemic. Yesterday, the Labor Department reported that weekly jobless claims hit their highest level since October and continuing unemployment claims remained high. That means it’s taking longer for those out of work to find new jobs. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/may-2025-jobs-report-hiring-layoffs-how-us-economy-is-doing-now-rcna210594
The rush to buy new vehicles ahead of tariffs continued in May, but at a slower pace than March and April, according to Edmunds.com. Toyota fared the best with sales up 11% in May compared with one year ago. Prices didn’t rise because most sales were from existing dealer inventory. In fact, the average price for a new car was down 0.2% last month, even as manufacturers raised the average by a similar amount. High interest rates and low consumer confidence are also putting a damper on big-ticket purchases. https://www.wtvq.com/car-prices-dipped-slightly-in-may/

Jimmy Buffett’s widow has filed suit to have the co-trustee of the singer and entrepreneur’s considerable estate removed. Jane Buffett claims Richard A. Mozenter has been “openly hostile and adversarial” towards her since her husband of 46 years’ death in September of 2023. She’d been sole beneficiary of the couple’s estate plan until a 2023 update of the trust. It took Mozenter nearly a year and a half to provide an estimate that the $275m trust would generate $2m a year for Jane. That’s less than 1% annually … a shockingly low figure since Mozenter had acknowledged that Buffett’s Margaritaville company, which is 20% owned by the estate, paid out $14m over the past 18 months. https://variety.com/2025/music/news/jimmy-buffett-widow-files-remove-co-trustee-estate-1236418134/
Senate Bill 712, better-known as Leno’s Law has cleared the California Senate Transportation Committee and the Senate Appropriations Committee, allowing it to be passed by the Senate. Named for comedian and noted car collector, Jay Leno, the bill exempts vehicles that are 35 or more model years old from biennial smog checks. The current requirements call for testing of any vehicle from the model year 1976 and newer. For a vehicle to qualify for the new 35-model year rolling exemption under SB 712, it must also have a special historical vehicle ID plate and be insured as a collector vehicle for limited use. The bill aims to preserve California’s car culture and classic car parts and restoration industry. If signed into law, the provisions would take effect January 1, 2027. www.google.com
An Ohio woman, claiming she was passed over for a promotion and demoted with both roles going to underqualified gay people won a Supreme Court ruling yesterday that could open a floodgate of reverse discrimination lawsuits. The ruling resolves confusion among federal appeals courts over whether or not members of majority groups including whites, men and straights need extra evidence of “background circumstances” to prove they were discriminated against. The high court says that extra evidence is an unfair barrier. Legal experts say it will now be easier to challenge corporate diversity initiatives. www.morningbrew.com
