Criminal proceedings have been suspended in the fatal attack on the owner of the so-called “Trump House” in Escondido while authorities determine the defendant’s mental state. Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, is charged with several felonies, including murder for the May 20 attack on 69-year- old Kerry Sheron outside the victim’s home, which was well known locally for its prominent display of American flags and pro-President Donald Trump memorabilia. Friends and family have described Butler as struggling with PTSD after leaving the Navy. He remains jailed at the Vista Detention without bail and faces up to 28 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/criminal-proceedings-paused-in-trump-house-murder-case

Stocks responsible for the artificial-intelligence boom bounced back today from Friday’s big sell-off. Some of today’s best performers are companies that sell computer chips, memory and other products associated with the AI boom. Investors have been trying to decide whether Friday’s stock plunge was the start of a downturn in the tech sector, or just a pause to get rid of excessive optimism. Treasury yields were mostly steady today following a jump on Friday. https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-rates-iran-economy-a4b9336d67a15d19d9aa5394e5a30be6
The annual Apple developers conference begins today in Cupertino. It’ll be CEO Tim Cook’s last before he turns over the reins to John Ternus in September. Market analysts are expecting the company to give updates on new AI features and capabilities for iPhones and its Siri voice assistant, who some have compared to a glorified kitchen timer as chatbots and other AI applications move leaps and bounds ahead of the 15-year old voice of the iPhone. Siri is expected to be more conversational, have memory to resume previous conversations, and be able to complete multiple tasks with a single request. Though Apple has prospered with the company value soaring by more than $4 trillion over the past 15 years, the company has had a rough start with AI, after stumbling with promised features nearly two years ago. https://apnews.com/article/apple-siri-wwdc-iphone-aa25d07c06d366ec5b62643a1f5b0db9
Both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are preparing for millions of seniors with Medicare to become eligible for GLP-1 weight loss drugs at $50 a month beginning July 1. Until now, Medicare beneficiaries had to pay out-of-pocket for obesity drugs. Prescriptions for Novo’s Wegovy pill are now over 3m since it entered the U.S. market five months ago. Lilly introduced its own GLP-1 pill in April, so sales are trailing far behind Novo. Lilly hopes to narrow the gap with an injected version that is reported to have additional health benefits and doesn’t have the empty stomach and fasting restrictions of Wegovy. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/08/novo-nordisk-eli-lilly-obesity-pills-medicare-coverage.html
With just weeks until regulators decide on the Paramount merger with Warner Bros., troubles at the CBS division threaten to set the whole thing on fire. Though media ethics aren’t a consideration for federal regulators, image is everything. And Scott Pelley’s firing after accusing new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of “putting a thumb on the scale” on behalf of the Trump administration, along with David Elllison’s image problem are weighing heavily on the minds of investors and causing several states’ attorneys general to organize an expected lawsuit to stop the merger on anti-trust grounds. But there’s actually more behind it. Remember, this is the network that killed The Late Show, blaming it on economics, while most believe it was politically-motivated to silence Trump critic, Steven Colbert. https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/08/media/bari-weiss-cbs-paramount-wbd-60-minutes-pelley-ellison

Last week’s #1, the horror thriller “Backrooms” dropped to third place with just under $26m – about one third of what it did last week when it debuted. “Obsession” was close behind. “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” opened in 5th place with $11.6m. The total attendance for the top ten films was almost exactly the same as last week, which was almost exactly the same as the first three days of Memorial Weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W23/
Billionaire hedge fund manager turned Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is against the concept of easy money, to the point that he’s meeting with community leaders, retirees and schoolchildren to talk about budgeting, saving, and managing debt. He says people should invest and “then watch it grow” rather than playing the lottery. He just finished a series of speaking engagements about budgeting and saving at the tail end of Financial Literary Month. Bessent is the product of an impoverished upbringing. He wants the promotion of financial literacy to be his legacy. https://apnews.com/article/bessent-treasury-secretary-profile-6ae242f0c3ad3643e052fd1a19d7154b
On this day in music history – June 8,
- 1963, The Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron” peaked at #3 on the singles chart. It was the biggest early success of producer Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” concept of layering track upon track for a really big sound. Studio musicians on the song included Leon Russell on piano and Glen Campbell on guitar.
- In 1967, Procol Harum was at #1 in England with their debut single, “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. It hit #1 in 13 other countries, but peaked at only #5 in America. In 2004, the song was named the most-played record of the past 70 years in the UK with more than 900 versions recorded by other artists.
- On the same day, The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” became the #1 album in England less than two weeks after its release. It would stay there for the rest of 1967. It would be another three weeks before it hit #1 in the U.S. Taking 700 hours of studio time to record at a cost of $42k – equivalent to more than a half million today, it was also the first album to print song lyrics on its sleeve.
- In 1969, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts visited founding member Brian Jones at his home to discuss his future with The Rolling Stones. The result was a media statement saying Jones was leaving the group.
- In 1974, it was a very busy day. Bill Wyman became the first Rolling Stone to release a solo album. “Monkey Grip” barely cracked the Top 100 on the U.S. album chart in spite of guest appearances by Dr. John, Leon Russell, and Lowell George.
- On the same day, David Bowie hit #1 in the UK with his 8th album and his third consecutive #1, “Diamond Dogs” featuring the hit singles “1984”, “Rebel Rebel” and the title track. It peaked at #5 in the U.S. Like The Beatles “butcher cover” from “Yesterday and Today”, Diamond Dogs’ cover was controversial with very few of the original design making it to retail. The cover art featured a painting by a Belgian artist of Bowie as a half-man, half-dog with genitalia clearly showing.
- On the same day, Dolly Parton was at #1 on the U.S. country chart with a song she wrote – “I Will Always Love You”. Elvis wanted to do a version but his manager insisted on half the publishing royalties, which was a deal-killer. It became a chart-topping hit for Whitney Houston eighteen years later in 1992 in the movie “The Bodyguard”.
- And still that same day in 1974, Paul McCartney and Wings were at #1 on the U.S. album chart with “Band on the Run”.
- In 1985, Tears for Fears began the first of two weeks at #1 with “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”.
- In 2003, Led Zeppelin had the #1 album with recordings from 31 years prior at the LA Forum and Long Beach Arena on their 1972 U.S. tour. The triple disc live album, “How the West Was Won” was Zeppelin’s 7th album to top the American charts.
Born on this day …
- In 1940, Nancy Sinatra
- In 1942, Chuck Negron, one of the three lead vocalists for Three Dog Night. He sang lead on their 1970 #1 hit “Mama Told Me Not to Come”, written by Randy Newman.
- In 1944, Boz Scaggs, who was once in the same band with Steve Miller – The Marksmen. He went on to have a string of solo hits in the mid-1970s.
- In 1947, Mick Box, guitarist with Uriah Heep.
- In 1953, Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler who had a #1 hit in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart”.
- In 1960, Mick Hucknall, lead singer for Simply Red
- In 1962, Nick Rhodes, keyboard player with Duran Duran
- In 1977, Kanye West
