The fire was 95% contained that evening. No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported. Later that day, at around 4:35p, a second fire was reported near De Portola Road and Via Luisa. That blaze burned approximately 2 acres before firefighters stopped its advance. https://patch.com/california/temecula/wildfires-spark-fade-temecula-rivco-scorched-under-triple-digit-heatwave-see

The first two games were close as well but went San Diego’s way. The Dodgers took two out of three in San Francisco, losing Friday’s opener and finishing yesterday with an 11-inning 5-2 win. The Angels took two from the visiting Diamondbacks before losing yesterday 5-1.

In the West, Houston is in first place by 5 games over Seattle. The Angels are in fourth, nine games off the pace. Where have all the curve balls gone? The pitch that legend says was invented about 160 years ago by Hall of Famer Candy Cummings when as a teen, he discovered the movement while throwing sea shells into the ocean, is losing its luster in the Major Leagues. Almost 23k fewer curve balls were thrown in 2024 than five years earlier. It’s the slowest and most active of the breaking pitches, averaging just 80.2 miles an hour at a time when baseball is obsessed with velocity. Even that is changing. The average speed of a curve ball in 2008 when they began keeping pitching statistics was only 76.5 miles an hour. Meanwhile, the average fastball is at a record 94.4 miles an hour this season, up from 91.9 in 2008, even though it’s not getting thrown as often either. Sliders, sweepers and slurves are increasingly the go-to pitch. https://apnews.com/article/mlb-disappearing-curveballs-286fc7d890f776759e613a9e0a59cddc

The Trump administration is suing the state of California to block animal welfare laws it says caused egg prices to soar beginning last year – and not just in California. The nationwide average price of eggs soared to $6.23 per dozen in March, then declined about a dollar in April and was down to $4.55 in May. At that point, the price was still 68.5% higher than a year earlier. Filed last Wednesday, the suit challenges California voter initiatives passed in 2018 and 2008 that require all eggs sold here to come from hens not raised in cages. The suit says that because of this state’s outsized economy, the ballot initiatives affected egg producers elsewhere as well, adding red tape and expense to poultry production everywhere, and that since it’s the federal government’s legal prerogative to regulate egg production, the California regulations are unconstitutional. Humane World for Animals, formerly called the Humane Society of the United States says the cause of the egg price increase was bird flu, not animal welfare laws, and that much of the U.S. egg industry went cage-free by public demand, not California law. 175m chickens had to be destroyed after contracting bird flu, causing an egg shortage and the price increases. https://apnews.com/article/egg-prices-california-animal-welfare-trump-48296b0149580e5620d6bcdcdcce89d7

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Superman” dominated with $122m in ticket sales on 4,100 screens. That was more than three times the take for “Jurassic World: Rebirth” in its second week in theaters. This Superman reboot came at the hands of James Gunn – the man behind the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. Disney’s Marvel Studios had a lot riding on it. Their last several films have bombed. Superman is the third-largest debut this year and the first DC Comic title to surpass $100m in its opening weekend since “Wonder Woman” in 2017. Being an American icon, Superman’s overseas opening was a little soft. Last week’s top five films each dropped one place. Overall movie attendance was the fourth-best weekend this year, with the Top 10 total attendance just barely behind the early April weekend in which “A Minecraft Movie” opened. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W28/
The city of Oceanside is considering the creation of a park ranger program to help manage its system of 17 community parks, 16 neighborhood parks, recreation centers, aquatics facilities, a regional park, five skate parks, and miles of trails and open space. The city’s Parks and Recreation Commission this month unanimously approved conducting a feasibility study to determine the costs and benefits of a ranger program, something city officials have considered for years, but never had the money to do. Carlsbad and San Marcos both have city park rangers. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/13/park-ranger-program-proposed-for-oceanside/
