LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
It’ll be up to voters whether coastal North County’s main hospital, Tri-City Medical Center on the border between Vista and Oceanside begins a long-term lease with Sharp HealthCare. But that item may not appear on a ballot for another year unless Tri-City wants to schedule a special election at its own expense. Even that wouldn’t be until November. And Sharp has yet to complete its due diligence in taking over Tri-City. A previous partnership with UC San Diego Health bogged down during that phase last year, leading to their agreement with the hospital falling apart in July. Two weeks ago, the hospital’s board of directors chose Sharp to take over all of Tri-City’s assets and liabilities on a lease similar to the one it has with Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa – probably for 30 years. A new 15-member board with a majority appointed by Sharp would oversee the new venture. In exchange, Sharp would invest $100m in Tri-City in the first five years and take over or retire all existing loans. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/09/it-could-be-a-year-before-tri-city-voters-decide-sharp-partnership/

A former government employee who pleaded guilty to defrauding the Department of Veterans Affairs out of more than $130,000 by claiming he was unemployed and required full-time caregiving from his wife has been sentenced to four months in prison. Rafael Castro and his wife Miriam Castro from Oceanside pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges earlier this year for claiming Rafael needed his wife’s full-time assistance with routine activities such as dressing himself and taking care of his personal hygiene. As it turned out, he was still holding down a job. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/ex-government-employee-sentenced-for-defrauding-department-of-veterans-affairs

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow gained four tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 was just barely positive. The Nasdaq was down a tenth. Gold fell $2.40 on the Comex to $3,341 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up almost $2 to $66.93 a barrel.
U.S. inflation rose less than expected in May. Yesterday’s Consumer Price Index figure for May was 2.4% – a tenth of a point less than analysts predicted. It’s also a tenth higher than April. Without the food and energy components, core CPI remained flat at 2.8%. That indicates that although tariffs are having an effect, it isn’t as much as expected. The U.S. currently adds a 10% fee to most imports as well as much higher levies on goods from China. The Federal Reserve is expected to hold interest rates steady at its meeting next week. The market has already priced-in two rate cuts by the Fed this year with the first one happening in September or October. President Trump and now, also Vice President Vance continue to criticize Fed chairman Jerome Powell for not following the lead of the European Central Bank and the Bank of England in cutting borrowing costs. https://www.ft.com/content/f75e5fab-431f-4a5a-aaed-883c3c0640e1
GM plans to invest $4b in several U.S. plants amid stalled trade talks between the Trump administration and Mexican leaders. The GM plants will begin producing two popular Chevrolet models currently built in Mexico. Tariffs took effect for imported vehicles in April and many auto parts in May. This appears to be a win for Trump’s tariffs, which were designed to bring jobs back to the U.S. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/10/gm-to-invest-4-billion-in-us-manufacturing-plants-amid-tariffs.html
Boeing booked orders for 303 new planes in May, the most of any month since December 2023. It delivered 45 last month. That’s almost double the number one year ago. LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
The heart and soul of The Beach Boys has died. Brian Wilson had been suffering from dementia and had been living under a conservatorship since early last year, following the death of his wife, Linda. From 1962 to 1966, the Beach Boys had ten Top-10 hits and seven more in the Top 40 – most of them written or co-written and produced by Wilson. The group’s sound revolved around vocal harmonies and increasingly lush and innovative melodies and production. Their popularity at the time was only exceeded by The Beatles, whom Wilson came to view as his artistic rivals. At least partially due to a strained relationship with his domineering father, Brian had a series of mental breakdowns, struggles with drugs and alcohol, a string of lawsuits and a falling out with the rest of the band which included two brothers, a cousin and a close family friend. He announced in 1964 that he would no longer perform live concerts with the band and was briefly replaced by Glen Campbell, and later, Bruce Johnston, who stayed with the band for decades. After years of recording, but no longer performing with the group, he was officially fired in 1982. He eventually pulled himself together and on the 50th anniversary of the group, once again reunited with them for a road tour. His bandmates and brothers, Carl and Dennis have both passed. Brian is survived by daughters Wendy and Carnie, who made up two-thirds of the 1990s pop group Wilson Philips. Brian Wilson was 82. https://variety.com/2025/music/news/brian-wilson-dead-beach-boys-1236428336/
On this day in music history – June 11,
- 1960 early Beatles drummer Tommy Moore made the fateful decision to quit the group and go back to his job driving a forklift. Seemed like the better choice at the time. He was briefly replaced by a guy who only played three gigs before being called into the National Service. The group had no drummer for several weeks until Pete Best joined the day before they left for Hamburg to begin their first string of German club dates. As we all know, even Best eventually washed out in favor of Ringo Starr when the group got its big break in 1962.
- In 1966, the Rolling Stones began the first of two weeks at #1 with “Paint It Black”. It was the first chart-topping song to feature a sitar.
- On the same day, European radio stations erroneously reported that The Who’s lead singer, Roger Daltry was dead. Actually, it was Pete Townsend who’d only been injured in a car crash a few days earlier.
- In 1967, an ad in Melody Maker sought a “Freaky lead guitarist, bass and drummer” for Mark Bolan’s new group, which became Tyrannosaurus Rex, later shortened to T. Rex.
- In 1977, Joe Strummer and Topper Headon from The Clash were detained overnight in British jail for failure to appear before a Magistrate three weeks earlier. The charge was theft of a Holiday Inn pillowcase. They were fined $170.
- Also in 1977, KC and the Sunshine Band became only the second group since the Jackson Five to have four #1 hits when “I’m Your Boogie Man” hit the top of the chart.
- In 2000, Aaliyah’s “Try Again” became the first song ever to reach #1 through airplay-only. It had not yet been released for sale.
- In 2002, Paul McCartney married Heather Mills. The two had met three years earlier at an animal rights awards ceremony. They divorced four years later with Mills getting a settlement and assets somewhere along the lines of $30m.
- In 2011, Pink Floyd’s 1973 album “Dark Side of the Moon” re-entered the charts at #47 and reached the milestone of having been on the charts 1,000 weeks including reaching #1 on multiple occasions.
- In 2019, the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals decided to review its 2016 decision that Led Zeppelin had not plagiarized “Stairway to Heaven” from the opening riff of Spirit’s 1968 song, “Taurus”. The two bands had toured together before Stairway was written.
Born on this day …
- In 1946, John Lawton from Uriah Heep
- In 1947, Glenn Leonard who was with The Temptations from 1975 to 1983.
- In 1949, Frank Beard, drummer for ZZ Top. Ironically, he’s the only member of the band who doesn’t have a beard.
- In 1952 Donnie Van Zant, vocalist and guitarist with 38 Special. He’s the younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd, who died in a 1977 plane crash.
