LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A wildfire broke out yesterday in an open field just north of River Village along the east side of South Mission Road in Bonsall.  It was reported just before 3p and prompted road closures and evacuations for well over 200 homes in an area bounded by South Mission, Highway 76 and Via Monserate as it burned towards La Cañada Road and Sweetgrass Lane.  Additional areas for a mile or two north of that triangle were put on warning to prepare for evacuation.  Bonsall Elementary School on Old River Road was the designated evacuation center. Highway 76 and South Mission Road were closed for several hours as crews with air support worked to contain the slow-moving fire.  Winds were moderate, but blowing to the east, bringing thick smoke up the San Luis Rey River valley through Pala around 4p.  SDG&E shut off power in the burn area to aid firefighters.  The fire’s forward progress was stopped around 4:30p. As of 7:30p, evacuation orders and warnings had been lifted.  The fire was reported 100% contained by 10:30p last night and the acreage burned adjusted down to 15 acres.  It had earlier been reported at 21 acres.  There were no injuries and no structures damaged though it did burn very close to some homes.  Defensible space is credited for helping save them.  A couple of vehicles were damaged.  Cal Fire was the lead agency for what it dubbed the “Mission 2 Fire” because there was already another “Mission Fire” burning in Alameda County.  Fire units from North County, Oceanside, and Vista Fire responded as well.  Air support included Sheriff’s helicopters from El Cajon and one that had just last week begun being stationed at Fallbrook Air Park.  Fixed wing aircraft dropped fire retardant.  CHP and Sheriff’s deputies coordinated road closures. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/06/12/news/mission-2-fire-100-percent-contained-15-acres/79093.html

Just before the Mission 2 Fire, a brush fire broke out on Camp Pendleton in the Zulu Impact Area.  It sent smoke into Temecula and Murrieta.  There was no threat to people or structures. https://patch.com/california/temecula/another-brush-fire-reported-near-temecula

A fire along the Mexican border with eastern San Diego County yesterday burned about 200 acres on the Mexican side.  Firefighters from Cal Fire responded the fire just west of Forrest Gate Road in Campo just before 4p.  Crews were recalled late last evening when it was determined there was “no longer a threat to the U.S.” https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/fire-burning-near-us-mexico-border/

There was a small brushfire in Ramona on Sunday morning.  It began along Highway 78 just east of Weekend Villa Road.  It was stopped at about 3 acres.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/small-brush-fire-contained-off-highway-78

A police chase ended in rural Bonsall over the weekend with a head-on crash between the suspects and an Oceanside PD cruiser.  OPD’s Gang Suppression unit tried to pull over the suspected stolen Jeep near Wisconsin Avenue and South Coast Highway earlier in the day.  That pursuit was called off due to safety concerns.  Later in the evening, dispatch received a hit on its license plate reader system at the other end of the city.  Officers responded, giving chase which ended in a crash.  Three suspects including one minor were arrested.  Two officers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4054786504744-officers-injured-three-arrested-with-gun-drugs-after-pursuit-in-stolen-vehicle

The city of Wildomar is holding a study session tonight to discuss a major housing development on the city’s west side.  At 6p there will be a special meeting of the Wildomar City Council at which staff will give an update on the 170-acre Bluffs at Hidden Springs Specific Plan.  The site borders the west side of I-15 between Clinton Keith Road and the Murrieta city limits.  If approved, it would include housing, mixed-use development, commercial recreation and open space.  There will be no action taken at tonight’s meeting.  It will be informational-only with an opportunity for public comment. https://patch.com/california/lakeelsinore-wildomar/170-acre-development-project-proposed-i-15-wildomar

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  Analysts blame the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.  The Dow fell ¾ of a percent.  The SUP 500 was off by 9 tenths.  The Nasdaq was down a full percent.  Gold fell $10.50 on the Comex to $3,406.80 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $2.50, trading at $74.27 a barrel.

Union workers at Ralphs and Albertsons are prepared to walk off the job – potentially next week over stalled contract negotiations.  Local 770 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, representing 45k Southern California grocery workers accused the two chains of breaking labor laws and keeping stores critically understaffed.  They say customers are frustrated as a result.  A recent study by Consumer Reports accuses Kroger – which owns Ralphs of overcharging customers by 18.4%.  Union members authorized a strike in a vote last week, but no date has been set for a walkout.   Contracts with Kroger and Albertsons expired March 2.  UFCW workers in other states have authorized strikes as well.  If they all happen at the same time, “it could become the largest grocery strike in modern history,” according to the union. https://patch.com/california/temecula/why-grocery-store-workers-may-walk-job-temecula

Rite-Aid has announced additional store closures in California, bringing the total to 235 locations expected to close this year as a result of the company’s second bankruptcy filing.  Among those added to the list are the one on East Vista Way in Vista and four locations in San Diego – Tierrasanta Boulevard, Governor Drive, Clairemont Drive, and Carmel Mountain Road. https://patch.com/california/temecula/major-pharmacy-closing-more-ca-locations-amid-bankruptcy-new-report-says

According to a report by Nielsen, streaming has overtaken the combined share of viewing via broadcast and cable for the first time ever.  Almost 45% of all TV viewing in May was streaming.  20% for broadcasting and 24.1% for cable.  Streaming’s share has increase 71% in four years, while broadcast declined by 21% and cable by 39%.  The change is credited to three things:  free ad-supported channels, the rising use of YouTube, and changes by more traditional media companies to reach consumers who prefer streaming.  As of last month, YouTube alone represented 12 ½% of all television viewing.  That share has been increasing for the past four months.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/17/streaming-broadcast-cable-tv.html

While noting that 90% of its U.S. products are already free of synthetic dyes, Kraft Heinz announced it will remove all artificial food colorings from products sold here by 2027, and that it will stop creating new products with these dyes immediately.  Many of the current products that contain dyes targeted by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are in beverages and desserts – brands including Crystal Light, Kool-Aid, Jell-O and Jet-Puffed.  Heinz Ketchup has no artificial colors.  About ten years ago, the company switched from dyes to natural spices like paprika and turmeric to give Kraft Mac & Cheese its iconic yellow-orange color. https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2025/06/17/nx-s1-5436815/kraft-heinz-artificial-food-dyes#:~:text=Kraft%20Heinz%20says%20it%20will,already%20free%20of%20synthetic%20dyes.

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movies, “How to Train Your Dragon” opened in first place with $84m in ticket sales on over 4,300 screens.  “Lilo and Stitch” fell to second place for the first time in its four weeks of release, earning another $15.7m.  “Materialists” debuted in third place with $12m on just 2,800 screens.  “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” dropped one place to fourth with another $10.5m.  Dragon’s big success pushed the Top Ten total for the weekend 42% higher than last weekend – good for 5th-best weekend at the movies so far this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W24/

American Express and Chase are reviving the credit card wars for those obsessed with travel and dining rewards.  AmEx announced yesterday that its Platinum card will be getting a refresh in the fall.  That follows Chase’s teases about an update to its Sapphire Reserve card coming this summer.  Fees are expected to increase for both.  Platinum currently costs $695 a year.  Sapphire Reserve is $550 with rumors that it could increase to $795.  But they’ll also come with more stuff, including fancy new airport lounges at airports in Tokyo, Newark and Salt Lake City.  www.morningbrew.com

Replicating the business model of Ryan Reynolds’ Mint Mobile and SmartLess Mobile, a Trump family business managed by the President’s kids is launching a phone service called T1 Mobile.  No word on what T-Mobile thinks of that.  T1 Mobile will offer a no-contract plan with unlimited wireless calls, text and data along with 24/7 roadside assistance, telehealth and U.S.-based customer service for $47.45 a month – because Trump is the 47th and 45th U.S. president.  It’ll connect customers to 5G service from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.  Critics are concerned about potential conflicts of interest since the President oversees the regulator for mobile services and he’d recently made tariff threats against Apple regarding their smartphones. www.morningbrew.com
