The future of Vivian Banks Charter School in Pala is on the agenda of tonight’s Bonsall Unified School District board meeting. The question of whether the charter should be renewed hinges on a number of issues, including the cost of maintaining and, where necessary, upgrading the classrooms which are part of the Pala Mission complex, making them by far the oldest campus in the Bonsall district. Staffing is also a consideration. According to published reports, Vivian Banks has 89 enrolled students over all the lower elementary grades. According to board member for Area E of the district including Pala, Eric Ortega, the current enrollment is 71. Being on the Pala reservation, the school receives types of federal support the rest of the Bonsall district does not. Enrollment in a charter school is voluntary. In general, charter schools enjoy specialized instruction, smaller class sizes, and strong parental and community involvement. Tonight’s board meeting is at Bonsall Community Center with the public portion of the meeting beginning at 6p. Review of the charter for Vivian Banks school is the 4^th item and likely to come up around 6:30p.

Authorities believe someone is targeting youth sports facilities throughout San Diego County after a rash of break-ins at storage facilities including snack bars and equipment rooms. San Marcos Girls Softball League was the latest to be hit, suffering two thefts within a week, resulting in more than $3k in losses. The thieves cleaned out snacks and drinks along with a safe containing snack bar proceeds. A second break-in Saturday resulted in the loss of tools. The Mira Mesa Girls Softball League reported its equipment room was targeted earlier this month. A sports group in Rancho Bernardo has been robbed four times nine months. Several ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold across the United States are being recalled because they may be contaminated with a strain of Listeria monocytogenes linked to a multi-state outbreak. According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, FreshRealm has announced a voluntary recall of three of its chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold at Walmart and Kroger stores nationwide. https://patch.com/maryland/belair/ready-eat-meals-sold-md-recalled-over-listeria-risk

In the NBA championship series – Oklahoma City leads three games to two going into tomorrow’s Game Six in Indianapolis.

In the NHL Stanley Cup series – Last night in Sunrise, Florida, the Panthers won the Stanley Cup for a second straight year by trouncing the visiting Edmonton Oilers 5-1, taking the championship series four games to two. Although Sam Reinhart scored four goals including one unassisted and two empty-net, it was Matthew Tkachuk who scored what turned out to be the winning goal with less than a minute left in the first period. Reinhart’s four goals made him the first player since Maurice Richard in 1957 to score that many times in a Stanley Cup series game. Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots. The only Edmonton goal came from Vasily Podkolzin late in the third period, long after the runaway game had already been decided. https://www.espn.com/nhl/recap/_/gameId/401777460

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost again to the Dodgers. This time, 8-6 at Dodger Stadium in a game with plenty of shenanigans. LA manager, Dave Roberts got ejected in the third inning after San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and LA’s Shohei Ohtani were both hit by pitches. Both teams had been warned. But Roberts came onto the field to complain and was tossed by the third base umpire. The Padres’ Jose Iglesias was also plunked in the 7^th inning, but just on the hand. Andy Pages hit 4 for 4 including a pair of two-out homers. Will Smith hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the 6^th. The Padres, trailing by five runs, scored three in the 7^th and had the bases loaded in the 8^th, but stranded them on a third out pop fly. Game 3 of 4 is today. The Giants lost their third straight game – this time to Cleveland 3-2. The Dodgers are now in first place by 3 ½ games over San Francisco and by five over third-place San Diego. The Angels shut out the Yankees in New York 4-0.

In the NFL – The Baltimore Ravens have signed former Green Bay cornerback Jaire Alexander to a one-year deal worth $6m including $2m in incentives. In Rugby – The San Diego Legion are the Western Conference number one seed for this year’s Major League Rugby playoffs. They will host the conference final on July 2. Taking another step towards that final, Houston beat RFCLA 27-21 on Saturday.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed modest gains across the board. The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up around a tenth of a percent. Gold traded $1.70 higher on the Comex at $3,408.10 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 9 cents at $74.93 an ounce.

Wrapping up its monthly meeting, the Federal Reserve announced it will keep interest rates at their current level for at least another month and probably longer, but is still likely to make two rate reductions later this year. U.S. air carriers have all announced plans to trim capacity in the second half of this year in the face of weaker than expected demand for air travel. That’s also causing fares to fall. The Labor Department reports airfares in May were down an average of 7.3% compared with the same time last year. JetBlue yesterday announced further cuts in off-peak flights and unprofitable routes after federal judges blocked its planned acquisition of competing budget carrier Spirit Airlines last year. JetBlue will also put on hold plans to retrofit four of its older Airbus A320 jets with new interiors and instead park them for now. According to the annual report released by the Social Security Board of Trustees today, the trust fund they rely on to pay retirement benefits could be depleted by 2033. At that point, only 77% of benefits will be payable. About 70m people will receive Social Security benefits this year. 185m work and contribute to the program through payroll taxes. SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano said the financial status of the trust is a “top priority” for the Trump administration and called on Congress to “protect and strengthen” the trust funds for those who rely on them now and in the future. To do that, Congress’ options are to raise taxes, cut benefits, or both. Workers currently contribute 6.2% of their pay to Social Security and 1.45% to Medicare. Even though consumer sentiment was down in May, or possibly because of it, Amazon announced today that its next Prime Day sale coming up in July will expand from the usual two days to four. It’ll kick off Tuesday, July 8 and continue through midnight Friday the 11^th. Discounts range from around 20% up to 80%. According to Amazon, last summer was Prime Day’s biggest event to date with more than 200m items sold by independent sellers during the 48 hours. President Trump is giving TikTok a third lifeline. Five months after a federal law went into effect requiring the divestiture of TikTok from its Beijing-based owner, ByteDance, and after two extensions to the implementation of that law, reportedly because a sale was near, Trump told reporters today, “We’ll be extending it.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said an executive order would be signed this week to keep TikTok running for another 90 days, “which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed.” https://www.npr.org/2025/06/18/nx-s1-5430884/trump-tiktok-ban-third-extension

Here are statistics for the entire country

ORDERS

Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments. Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places. It’s now only a recommendation. Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis. They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices. Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended. Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began. They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours. But no test is necessary.

PANDEMIC SERVICES

All enrolled American Indian and Alaskan Natives can request Non-Recurrent, Short-Term Benefits through the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association’s TANF program. Details at the SCTCA Tribal TANF web page. https://sctca.net/tribal-tanf/
Rite-Aid offers Covid-19 testing by appointment at no cost for anyone 18 or older even if they don’t have symptoms. Results take three to five days. Instant test results are available at some locations on certain days. Regular testing Monday through Friday 10a to 8p and Saturdays and Sundays 10a to 5p at the Rite-Aids on South Mission in Fallbrook, Cole Grade Road in Valley Center and 1201 South Coast Highway in Oceanside.
CVS Health has free drive-thru COVID-19 testing at select pharmacy locations nationwide. You must meet CDC criteria as well as state and age guidelines. Qualify yourself, find a location, and make the appointment online at www.CVS.com

County Behavioral Health also has resources for Taking Care of Your Family During Disease Outbreaks and Managing Your Mental Health during pandemic.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

SDG&E is offering a bill discount program to help customers impacted by the pandemic. A pair of plans with applications available online at SDGE.com could lower utility bills by 18 to 30% for those who’ve recently become unemployed or are receiving unemployment benefits.
All DMV services are now online with increased grace periods for expiring licenses, IDs and vehicle registrations. Not all commercial licenses have grace periods or can be completed fully online.
