Pala Today News – 6/20/24

The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and the official start of summer in the northern hemisphere.  This is the earliest it’s happened in over 200 years.  In general, the solstice happens later and later each year.  But this, being a Leap Year caused it and the spring equinox to happen almost a day earlier than last year.  Even with such corrections, our calendar remains slightly out of sync with the actual solar year.  As a result, the vernal equinox in Spring happens about 40 to 50 minutes earlier than the one in the previous Leap Year.  That made this year’s vernal equinox fall on March 19 and the summer solstice fall today, on June 20.  That’s only happened twice in the past 128 years.  Regardless of when it happened, thousands gathered today as they always do at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England to watch the sun rise among the Druid ruins believed to have been used in ancient times to tell time – at least on a seasonal basis. https://www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/science/earth-science/science-and-celebration-of-the-earliest-summer-solstice-since-1796

You’re going to spend some extra time driving through Bonsall today.  Cal Trans reports that signal lights at the intersection of Highway 76 and S. Mission Road in Bonsall are undergoing repairs and will be on flash mode until 3 this afternoon.  Expect an extensive traffic backup on southbound Mission and in both directions of 76 approaching Mission.  As of noon, westbound 76 was backed up to the 15 freeway.  If you’re headed from Pala to Fallbrook, consider taking Reche Road or N. Mission instead.

A multi-vehicle crash on southbound I-15 near Old Highway 395 just before midnight claimed one life and resulted in the arrests of two drivers.  Meanwhile, all southbound lanes were closed for a time for investigation.  It began when a Chevy Colorado in the #2 lane was rear-ended by a Nissan Titan.  The Chevy became disabled in the lane, where three other vehicles piled into it.  A 32-year old woman from Compton who was a passenger in the fourth vehicle involved died at the scene.  That car’s driver, a 32-year old man from Perris was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.  The Chevy’s driver, 26-year old Mark Anthony Bengal from Chula Vista and the driver of the fifth vehicle involved were both arrested on suspicion of DUI.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/at-least-1-dead-driver-arrested-in-multi-vehicle-crash-on-i-15-in-bonsall-area

Later this morning, the driver of a Toyota was hospitalized with serious injuries after that vehicle collided with a school bus at the intersection of Monte Vista Drive and Lita Lane in Vista.  The crash happened just before 8a.  Five students, aged 5 to 10 and the driver of the bus were uninjured. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/vehicle-school-bus-collide-on-vista-street

The former manager of Harrah’s in Rincon has died.  Darrel Wayne Pilant was senior vice president and general manager at the resort at the onset of Covid-19 in 2020 and was forced out when he refused to reopen early due to safety concerns.  Later that year, he sued Harrah’s claiming he’d been fired for being a whistleblower.  The case was settled out of court.  Pilant had been with the Harrah’s organization for 23 years.  He passed away last Friday at Georgetown Lake in Montana. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/former-harrahs-casino-manager-dies/

With the Juneteenth holiday giving many people the day off work, a lot of them headed to the San Diego County Fair yesterday.  As a result, Fair officials declared yesterday a sellout – the first one this year.  Nobody who hadn’t bought tickets in advance online was allowed in after 6:30p.  On-site parking lots were full as of early afternoon and the remote horse training facility parking lot filled up later in the day.  No report on the free lot at Canyon Crest Academy.  Officials continued to advise fairgoers to use the Fair Tripper option, which combines a North County Transit or MTS bus or train ride with fair admission for the cost of admission alone.  While attendance is expected to be much lower today, tomorrow is Kids Day with kids 12 and under admitted for free.  So, tomorrow is likely to be another crowded day at the Fair.  Then comes the weekend, which is always busy.  The San Diego County Fair is open Wednesdays through Sundays now through July 7.  Ticket information, purchasing options and schedules for the Fair are at www.SDFair.com

There was a 3.0 magnitude earthquake just after 10:15 this morning, centered near Devore in San Bernardino County.  It wasn’t felt much south of Riverside.  There were also two very small ones near Anza just after the Devore quake.  Nobody reported feeling them. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40804504/executive

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres avoided a sweep, beating the Phillies in Philadelphia 5-2.  Matt Waldron got the win for San Diego.  An RBI single by first baseman Luis Arraez in the 7th gave the Padres their first lead of the game.  With the bases loaded, catcher Kyle Higashioka added three RBIs the next inning with his first career triple.  The Rockies managed to edge the Dodgers 7-6 in Denver.  They’ll finish that series today.  Yesterday’s loss by Arizona puts the Padres back in a tie with the Diamondbacks for second place, nine games behind LA.  Milwaukee shut out the Angels 2-0.  Today, the Brewers head to Petco Park for the start of a weekend series with the Padres.  The Angels have the day off.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 8-3 at Visalia last night.  Game 3 of 6 is tonight.  https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-06

In the NHL Stanley Cup finals – The Panthers lead the Oilers 3 games to 2.  Game 6 is tomorrow in Edmonton at 5p on ABC.

In basketball – This weekend’s rematch between basketball rivals Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will have the most expensive tickets ever for a WNBA game.  According to TickPick, the average is currently around $253.  That’s almost double the usual price for a Chicago Sky game and is more than double last season’s average for the Chicago Bulls.  The most expensive ticket on sale is currently going for more than $9k.  This will be the third professional matchup between the former college rivals.  Last Sunday’s game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky was the most-watched WNBA game on any network in 23 years.  The Fever won it and are 2 and 0 against the Sky this season.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/20/business/ticket-prices-caitlin-clark-reese-rematch/index.html

In Soccer – Last night, LAFC and Austin FC tied 1-1 in Austin, and the Galaxy won 2-0 over New York City FC in LA.

In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is Sunday hosting the Houston SaberCats.

In golf – The Travelers Championship teed off this morning in Cromwell, Connecticut.  Keegan Bradley is the defending champion.  With half the field still on the course in round one, four golfers were tied at 6 under par.  Three had completed their round.  Will Zalatoris was still on the 16th. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed today.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 4 tenths of a percent.  But the broader indexes were down.  The S&P 500 fell two tenths of a percent.  And the NASDAQ was off by more than a half percent.  Comex gold gained $21.60 an ounce at $2,368.50.  Oil futures were up with West Texas Intermediate Crude gaining 50 cents a barrel to $82.07.

A cyberattack against data provider CDK Global is affecting computer systems at 15k automobile dealers in the U.S. and Canada, bringing business operations to a near stand-still for a second day.  CDK told dealers yesterday it was actively investigating a cyber incident and out of caution and concern for customers had shut down most of its systems.  It put most of the critical computer systems back online late yesterday.  But today, the company sent dealers another message saying things had taken a turn for the worse and that systems would be down for at least the rest of today.  Not every car dealer uses CDK and some that do don’t use it for everything.  But many are now having trouble accessing records for negotiated deals and scheduling and communicating about vehicle parts and service. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/19/tech/car-dealership-cdk-cyber-incident-outage/index.html

Mortgage rates have fallen to their lowest level in three months.  According to mortgage financing giant, Freddie Mac, the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage with excellent credit is now 6.87% – down from 6.95% last week and down for the third consecutive week.  They’d peaked at almost 7 ¼% earlier this year.  Though the Federal Reserve doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, its actions do influence them through the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield.  With the Fed now planning just one interest rate cut this year instead of the previously-expected three, economists don’t expect mortgage rates to fall below 6% anytime this year.  And 6% is still historically high for mortgages. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/20/economy/mortgage-rates-june-20/index.html

To help customers fight inflation, McDonald’s has released the details of its new $5 value meal.  Beginning next Tuesday, its stores in the US will offer a McDouble cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, small fries, 4-piece chicken nuggets and a small soft drink for $5 in the hopes of luring back customers who have cut back on visits to restaurants due to soaring prices.  Other deals, including buy one-get one and smaller combo deals are being offered on a local basis in various markets.  McDonalds’ announcement of its coming value meal last month prompted competitors to do the same. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/20/food/mcdonalds-value-meal-details/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

After 57 years, the Valley Center Rotary Club held its final meeting on Monday.  Members of the disbanded group say they plan to join either the Valley Center Business Association, the Kiwanis Club of Valley Center or both.  Earlier this year, the Rotary handed over the reins to its annual Western Days pancake breakfast to the Valley Center FFA.  The Rotary will distribute any remaining funds to the local high school scholarship foundation, and Valley Center Fire for new equipment and to help with the new fire station on Cole Grade Road. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/valley-center-rotary-holds-final-meeting/

According to a survey of major businesses by Duke University and the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Richmond, artificial intelligence is taking over the jobs of humans faster than you think.  More than 60% of large US firms plan to use AI to automate tasks previously done by employees within the next year.  That includes paying bills, issuing invoices and preparing financial reports. Some already rely on ChatGPT and other similar sources to create job posts, write media releases and build marketing campaigns.  They’re doing it to both boost profits and make workers more productive.  Though AI could result in job losses, some experts don’t believe it will cause that many … at least, not right away.  Duke University professor John Graham says that in the short run, it’s more about plugging holes and maybe not making a new hire they otherwise might, but not laying people off.  Displacement of human workers won’t happen within months.  But it also won’t take decades.  It’ll happen within years. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/20/business/ai-jobs-workers-replacing/index.html

A report by the San Diego nonprofit, Circulate San Diego says the California Coastal Commission is worsening the housing crisis and the environment by blocking high-density and low-income projects in beach communities.  It says blocking such projects not only inflates the cost of available housing in desirable beach areas, but also in traditionally more-affordable nearby communities, forcing people out of the area, leading to longer commutes, leading to more greenhouse gas emissions, thus worsening the environment.  The report also blames the Coastal Commission for making the state’s beach communities more segregated and more White than other neighborhoods.  The Commission responded by saying the 27-page report speaks for developers who want to build without sensible restrictions and lacks credible evidence for its allegations against the Commission.  Assemblymember David Alvarez from San Diego has authored AB 2560 to reduce the Commission’s authority.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/18/has-the-coastal-commission-made-housing-and-climate-crises-worse-its-offended-at-even-the-suggestion/

On this day in music history – June 20

  • 1969, David Bowie recorded “Space Oddity” at Trident Studios in London.  Inspired by the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey” the previous year, it was rush-released ahead of the Apollo 11 moon landing, but didn’t sell well and was banned in the U.S.  It didn’t become a hit here until re-released after the Ziggy Stardust album in 1972, by which time the association with the Stanley Kubrick film was all but forgotten.  A third release of the song in 1975 sent it to #1 in the UK.
  • On the same day, it was the first day of a three-day music festival in Newport Beach featuring Ike and Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, The Rascals, Steppenwolf, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Johnny Winter, Eric Burdon, and Love. Tickets were $15 for all three days.  Jimi Hendrix’ performance fee of $125k was the most ever paid for a single appearance by a rock act at that time and over $100k more than he got for playing at Woodstock.
  • In 1981, Stars on 45 were at #1 on the singles chart with a medley of Beatles songs set to a disco beat.  It was the beginning of a flood of “Stars On …” hits paying tribute to various acts.
  • In 1987, Aerosmith appeared at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.  It was the first night of the 147-date Permanent Vacation tour.
  • In 1992, Mariah Carey scored her sixth #1 hit with “I’ll Be There” – a cover of the 1970 Jackson Five hit.
  • In 1997, Lawrence Payton of The Four Tops died from liver cancer at the age of 59.
  • In 2000, a New York judge awarded The Ronettes $2.6m in back royalties owed by their producer, Phil Spector.
  • In 2004, organizers of the Paul McCartney concert in Petersburg, Russia seeded the clouds with dry ice so it wouldn’t rain on what would be McCartney’s 3,000th concert appearance – 2,535 with the Quarrymen and The Beatles, 140 with Wings, and 325 solo shows.
  • In 2008, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Holdings partnered with New York gambling company Coastal Marina to buy Trump Marina Casino for $316m.
  • In 2019, an auction of David Gilmour’s guitars set several auction records.  Among the 130 guitars sold, the so-called Black Strat brought just under $4m.  A 1954 Fender Stratocaster with serial number 0001, which was used to record “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” went for over $1.8m.  Two others sold also set new world records.
