A couple of hundred SDG&E customers in the Winterwarm and San Luis Rey Heights parts of Fallbrook lost power this morning after 11a. These areas are near last week’s Mission 2 Fire. More than 15 years after the McStay family of four mysteriously disappeared from their Fallbrook home, a new book is shedding light on unanswered questions in the high-profile murder case. Local best-selling author Caitlin Rother spent 12 years researching the McStay family murders for her new book “Down to the Bone,” which explores the case from their initial disappearance through the murder trial. It all began with the disappearance of Joseph and Amber McStay and their two young sons from their home near Highway 76 and I-15 in February 2010. Video footage of a family resembling the McStays crossing the border led sheriff’s deputies to initially conclude they had left voluntarily. But more than three years after they vanished, the family’s remains were discovered in shallow graves near Victorville, along with a sledgehammer. A year later, Chase Merritt, Joseph McStay’s business partner, was arrested. Following a five-month trial, he was convicted and later sentenced to death. Despite the conviction, questions continue to surround the case that captured national attention. Among the revelations in files obtained by the author was information about Joseph McStay’s gun, which was found in a felon’s car stolen in Las Vegas. It had somehow been traded by people in the cannabis industry. The book also examines several DNA samples recovered inside and outside the graves which didn’t match Merritt or the McStay family. Merritt’s defense team focused on another business associate of Joseph McStay, who owned a company that sold decorative fountains. The entire defense’s case was to blame Dan Kavanaugh, or at least to show that Dan Kavanaugh had the same, if not much more, of the exact same motive they ascribe to Chase Merritt, and yet, he was never even a suspect, according to author Rother. Merritt is expected to make an appeal and file a writ of habeas corpus sometime this year. “Down to the Bone” will be in stores and online June 24. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/new-book-reveals-unanswered-questions-in-mcstay-family-murder-case

In the NBA championship series – there will be a deciding Game 7 Sunday in Oklahoma City. Last night, the Pacers tied up the series at three games apiece with a decisive 108-91 win in front of the Thunder home crowd. Sunday’s game will be at 5p on ABC.
In Major League Baseball – The Padres managed to avoid a sweep at Dodger Stadium amid protests outside the ballpark about the alleged presence of ICE agents earlier in the day. Xander Bogaerts got the scoring started in the first inning with a 401-foot homer to center field. He scored two more times on hits by Jose Iglesias and Jake Cronenworth. Even though he only lasted an inning and one out, starting pitcher Adrian Morejon got the win. Final score 5-3. San Francisco edged the visiting Guardians 3-2. The Yankees beat the visiting Angels 7-3 avoiding a sweep by the Halos. Weekend series begin today with the Padres hosting the Royals, the Dodgers hosting the Nationals, the Giants hosting the Red Sox, and the Angels hosting the Astros.
Tempers flared again at last night’s Padres’ Dodgers’ game as both Shohei Ohtani and Fernando Tatis Jr. were hit by pitches for the second time in three days. It’s the fifth time Tatis has been hit by a Dodger pitcher since the start of the 2024 season. Three of those have been in the past nine days. Though benches cleared last night, there was no fight. Two managers, one bench coach and one pitcher were ejected from the game. Tatis’ right hand will be checked out by doctors today. Third baseman Manny Machado said last night that the Dodgers had better pray Tatis is not seriously injured. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45548982/ohtani-tatis-hit-again-dodgers-padres-feud-boils-over

Today is one of four times each year with an event known in financial circles as triple witching hour, when stock options, stock index futures, and stock index options all expire simultaneously. It happens in the final hour of New York Stock Exchange trading on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December every year. Triple witching is a time of increased volatility for the market. Today’s event has the potential to be bearish as the traders are generally nervous anyway about escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran and whether the United States will get involved militarily.
As hostilities between Iran and Israel escalate and President Trump raises the possibility of U.S. military involvement in the conflict, some of his influential supporters online are publicly disagreeing with him, which is rare in the pro-Trump media sphere. A day after Israel launched its attack on Iran, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson wrote a newsletter titled “An Act of War, Sponsored by the United States” and talked about his objections with former Trump advisor Steve Bannon on Bannon’s War Room podcast. Trump fired back at Carlson on Monday evening, writing on Truth Social: “Somebody please explain to kooky Tucker Carlson that,” IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”” Multiple pro-Trump influencers have since come out on Tucker Carlson’s side that war is not an option. The weekly YouGov/Economist poll published Tuesday found that 60% of Americans don’t think the U.S. military should be involved in a conflict between Israel and Iran. https://www.npr.org/2025/06/18/nx-s1-5438122/trump-iran-israel-conflict-tucker-carlson

On this day in music history – June 20
- 1969, David Bowie recorded “Space Oddity” at Trident Studios in London. Inspired by the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey” the previous year, it was rush-released ahead of the Apollo 11 moon landing, but didn’t sell well and was banned in the U.S. It didn’t become a hit here until re-released after the Ziggy Stardust album in 1972, by which time the association with the Stanley Kubrick film was all but forgotten. A third release of the song in 1975 sent it to #1 in the UK.
- On the same day in 1969, it was the first day of a three-day music festival in Newport Beach featuring Ike and Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, The Rascals, Steppenwolf, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Johnny Winter, Eric Burdon, and Love. Tickets were $15 for all three days. Jimi Hendrix’ performance fee of $125k was the most ever paid for a single appearance by a rock act at that time and over $100k more than he got for playing at Woodstock.
- In 1981, Stars on 45 were at #1 on the singles chart with a medley of Beatles songs set to a disco beat. It was the beginning of a flood of “Stars On …” hits that paid tribute to various acts.
- In 1987, Aerosmith appeared at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. It was the first night of the 147-date Permanent Vacation tour.
- In 1992, Mariah Carey scored her sixth #1 hit with “I’ll Be There” – a cover of the 1970 Jackson Five hit.
- In 1997, Lawrence Payton of The Four Tops died from liver cancer at the age of 59.
- In 2000, a New York judge awarded The Ronettes $2.6m in back royalties owed by their producer, Phil Spector.
- In 2004, organizers of the Paul McCartney concert in Petersburg, Russia seeded the clouds with dry ice so it wouldn’t rain on what would be McCartney’s 3,000th concert appearance – 2,535 of them with the Quarrymen and The Beatles, 140 with Wings, and 325 solo shows.
- In 2008, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Holdings partnered with New York gambling company Coastal Marina to buy Trump Marina Casino for $316m.
- In 2019, an auction of David Gilmour’s guitars set several auction records at the time. Among the 130 guitars sold, the so-called Black Strat brought just under $4m. A 1954 Fender Stratocaster with serial number 0001, which was used to record “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” went for over $1.8m. Two others sold that day also set new world records.
Born on this day …
- In 1920, Danny Cedrone who played lead guitar on “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley & His Comets, but never got to enjoy its success. Cedrone died in 1954 after falling down a staircase ten days after the song was recorded.
- In 1924, guitarist Chet Atkins who recorded over 100 albums and was a major influence on George Harrison and Mark Knopfler.
