LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A man was taken into custody following a chase through coastal North County ending in a crash on the 5 freeway in Oceanside last night.  It began around 8:30p when Sheriff’s deputies spotted a truck being driven a suspect in an unspecified case and tried to pull him over on Regal Road in Encinitas.  He took off instead.  CHP joined the pursuit when it entered southbound I-5, then came back on the northbound 5 through Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and Oceanside.  Spike strips were deployed near Cassidy Street, causing the truck to roll over and land on its side.  Both directions of the 5 freeway near Cassidy were closed when the driver refused to exit the vehicle.  Following a 20-minute standoff, the suspect surrendered around 10p and was transported to a hospital with minor injuries before booking. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/20/driver-sentenced-to-15-years-for-oceanside-dui-crash-that-killed-three/

A potential November ballot measure to make raising taxes in California more difficult has been derailed by the state Supreme Court.  The Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act, for which business and anti-tax groups collected more than a million signatures to bring to public vote was struck down by the court, saying the measure would fundamentally and illegally revise the State Constitution.  State tax increases already have a higher bar to clear than other kinds of legislation.  They require a two-thirds vote by both chambers in the legislature.  Some state fees that fund public services are not considered taxes and can be approved administratively.  Many local assessments need only a simple majority of local voters, or local boards or councils. The now-failed initiative would have required all state tax increases to be approved by supermajorities in the legislature and a majority of the state’s voters.  Fee increases by state agencies would have needed legislative approval.  Local special taxes would need an approval by two-thirds of voters.  Local fee increases would have required a local government vote.  The measure would have also retroactively cancelled any taxes or fees increased in the past two years that failed to comply with the new rules. www.nytimes.com

The Riverside County Registrar of Voters yesterday posted final certified results for the special recall election of Temecula Valley Unified School District president Joseph Komrowski.  With 45% voter turnout and just under 10k ballots cast, 51.09% chose to oust Komrowski, effective immediately.  The last day to request a recount is June 25.  Komrowski said the day after the election that he planned to run again in November. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/06/21/antisemitism-concerns-arise-over-item-in-temecula-valley-high-yearbook/

Refunds are being offered and the cause of a map in the Temecula Valley High School yearbook mislabeling parts of Israel as Palestine is being looked into.  It was paired with an entry about the Israel Hamas War in a section on world events this year, drawing complaints from the community, resulting in a response and action by district Superintendent Gary Woods.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/06/21/antisemitism-concerns-arise-over-item-in-temecula-valley-high-yearbook/

The Bonsall school district has added two new courses to the high school’s Career Technical Education program.  Advanced Computer Science Systems Programming and Advanced Product Innovation and Design will provide experience for students in those fields above and beyond the existing basic courses beginning this fall.  Funding will come from state grants. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/06/20/community/busd-approves-two-new-bonsall-high-school-courses/76361.html

The then-19-year-old man who drove drunk and killed three of six members of a family at an Oceanside intersection in 2019 was sentenced yesterday to 15 years in state prison.  Mason Robert Fish pleaded guilty to causing the accident that killed 74-year old Rufina Arango Rodriguez and her daughters, 40-year old Petra Arango and 56-year old Eloina Arango, and injured three others.  Fish ran a red light on South Coast Highway at Oceanside Boulevard at 1 in the afternoon, February 5, 2019, crashing into the side of the victims’ Mazda sedan with his pickup truck.  Yesterday’s sentence was a compromise between the 12 years Fish’s attorney was seeking and the maximum possible sentence of 22 years. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/20/driver-sentenced-to-15-years-for-oceanside-dui-crash-that-killed-three/

A story by David Ross in the Valley Roadrunner and online yesterday details the convoluted and numerous reasons construction at the shopping center and Circle K gas station along Valley Center Road at Miller Road stopped more than a year ago and the unfinished store has stood vacant ever since.  There have been no connections to utilities and certain safety features such as fire hydrants have yet to be installed.  A lawsuit was filed last July in which 6 Carat Enterprise LLC claims seven causes of action against the limited partnership known as Valley Center View Properties LP.  6 Carat was supposed to buy the land three years ago if the defendants completed certain agreed upon items, including a lot line adjustment.  There also needed to be a Major Use Permit for the car wash, and removal of some additional granite rocks.  None of it happened.  https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/circle-k-lessee-sues-miller-commercial-developer-for-breach-of-contract/

Tonight is the full Strawberry Moon.  It only happens within a day of summer solstice once about every 19 or 20 years.  Because the sun is at its highest point in the sky on the solstice, the moon appears lower in the sky and looks bigger than usual – but not as big as a supermoon, which is closer to Earth at the periapsis of its elliptical orbit.  The next one of those is in August.  The Strawberry Moon is so-named because it occurs during the traditionally short harvest season for the sweet berries.  Modern agriculture has significantly extended that season. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/full-strawberry-moon-ushers-summer-when-see-it-oceanside

This weekend will bring our first heatwave of the summer plus a chance of rain Sunday.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres edged the visiting Brewers 7-6 yesterday.  It was their third walk-off win this month.  Jake Cronenworth hit a 401-foot homer in the bottom of the 9th to end it. Earlier in the game, Fernando Tatis Jr launched a 446-foot round tripper to left center.  Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill got the San Diego scoring started with homers in the bottom of the 1st.  In Denver, the Dodgers beat the Rockies 5-3.  The Angels had a travel day yesterday.  They play the Dodgers in LA tonight.  The Padres-Brewers series continues with Game 2 of 4 at Petco Park tonight.

The Cardinals beat the Giants 6-5 yesterday at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.  It was the first MLB game ever played in the 114-year old stadium where Willie Mays got his start in the Negro Leagues at age 17.  He played most of his Major League career with the Giants.  Other greats who played at Rickwood over the years included Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige.  Ceremonies and special events went on for hours before yesterday’s game. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40397171/rickwood-festivities-celebrate-willie-mays-negro-league-greats

Kansas really wants the Royals and Chiefs to cross the river.  Just three days after the state legislature approved it, Gov. Laura Kelly today signed a bill enabling bonds to help finance new stadiums for the two professional sports teams who currently reside in Kansas City, Missouri.  The lease on the existing side-by-side stadiums in Missouri doesn’t end until 2031.  But voters there recently turned down a bond measure to refurbish them.  Talks of new stadiums in Kansas are still in the early stages.  Construction usually takes about three years.  The newly authorized Kansas bonds would cover about 70% of the cost of new football and baseball stadiums.  Metropolitan Kansas City straddles the Missouri River with about 60% of its 2.3m residents living on the Missouri side. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40401734/kansas-governor-signs-offer-chiefs-royals-stadium-help

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 2-1 at Visalia last night.  Game 4 of 6 is tonight.  https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-06

In the NHL Stanley Cup finals – The Panthers lead the Oilers 3 games to 2.  Game 6 is tonight in Edmonton at 5p on ABC.

In basketball – The Lakers have signed JJ Redick to a four-year contract as their new head coach.  It’s his first time in charge of an NBA team.  He played 15 years in the league and has been an NBA analyst for ESPN ever since including a close relationship with Lakers star LeBron James with whom he co-hosts a podcast. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40393973/sources-lakers-hiring-jj-redick-4-year-deal-coach

In Soccer – Tomorrow, the Galaxy are in Salt Lake City to play Real Salt Lake, and LAFC hosts San Jose.

In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is Sunday hosting the Houston SaberCats.

In golf – At the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, with half the field still on the course for round two, Tom Kim led by two strokes at 13-under-par into the clubhouse.   https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – NASCAR Cup at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and the Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway on Sunday.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed and trading in a narrow range.  The Dow was up a small fraction.  The S&P 500 was down a tenth of a percent.  And the NASDAQ was down a small fraction.  Gold plunged almost $32 an ounce to $2,337.10.  The benchmark, West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 74 cents to $80.55 a barrel.

Today is triple-witching day, which is when stock options, stock index futures, and stock index options contracts expire on the same trading day—causing trading volume, along with volatility, to skyrocket. The event occurs quarterly on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December.  Triple witching directly affects investors who are trading derivatives like futures contracts and options, rather than regular old buy-and-hold investors. But even if you’re not planning on trading tomorrow, the event can still affect the performance of individual stocks. Traders often adjust their portfolios to prepare for potentially heavy trading volume and big swings in the market on a triple-witching day, ironically causing more volatility.  Triple-witching hour occurs in the last hour of trading on triple-witching days, so between noon and 1p our time, which is also when volatility tends to peak.  www.marketwatch.com

U.S. home prices are at a record high.  The nationwide median price of an existing home was up for the 11th consecutive month in May.  It’s now $419,300 – up 5.8% from one year ago, according to the National Association of Realtors.  In California, the median price is more than double that.  Even through interest rates are down slightly, the increase in home prices is keeping them unaffordable for most.  The good news is that inventory is finally starting to increase.  Existing homeowners who’ve kept their homes off the market to hold onto mortgages with rates less than half that of new ones are finally coming up against life events that require them parting with their homes. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/21/economy/us-homes-prices-record-high/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

There are three new movies going into wide release this weekend.  “The Exorcism” with David Hyde Pierce is about a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film.  “The Bikeriders” is about the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club.  And Emma Stone stars in the comedy drama “Kinds of Kindness”.  https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/june/2024?view=list

One of the “pros from Dover” has passed.  If you’re a fan of the movie, M*A*S*H, you know that term.  Donald Sutherland played the lead role of Hawkeye Pierce in the Korean War farce.  His other credits ran the gamut from “The Dirty Dozen” to “The Hunger Games”.  Along the way he starred in “Kelly’s Heroes” with Clint Eastwood, “Klute” with Jane Fonda, “National Lampoon’s Animal House” – the only well-known actor in that 1978 movie, “Ordinary People” with Mary Tyler Moore, and “Six Degrees of Separation”.  Never nominated for an Oscar, he was presented with an honorary Academy Award in 2017.  His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland posted word of his father’s passing at the age of 88 yesterday after a long illness. https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-lists/best-donald-sutherland-roles-1235043309/the-dirty-dozen-1967-2-1235043322/

Amazon announced yesterday that it has eliminated 95% of the single use air-filled pillows it uses as package padding in North America and will likely be completely air-pillow-free by the end of the year.  The online retail giant has already phased out all plastic packaging in Europe and India.  Instead, Amazon will use recycled paper.  It’s not only easier to recycle than plastic, but Amazon has found it works better for protecting your purchases.  www.morningbrew.com
