A 198-page report this month from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirms what investigators have said about the fire that destroyed the outer end of the Oceanside Pier over two years ago. It was an accidental electrical failure under the northwest corner of the pier deck. In the weeks leading up to the fire, several people reported receiving electric shocks from touching metal lampposts along the top of the per and a fisherman reported electric shocks when picking up wet fish off the wooden pier deck. Though ATF was unable to confirm those claims, it was noted they are consistent with an open or floating neutral electrical connection. Oceanside city officials estimate the cost of repairs at $17m. The city said it will seek to recover losses exceeding $1m from insurance. The owner of the restaurant that was destroyed has private insurance. All of the damaged portions of the pier have been removed. Reconstruction is expected to begin just over a year from now.

In the NBA – Just three seasons after winning only 24 games, the Oklahoma City Thunder won 84 and the league championship in a seven-game NBA finals series. Yesterday’s clincher ended 103-91. In spite of Indiana superstar Tyrese Haliburton going down with an injury to his right Achilles tendon in the first quarter, the Pacers held a one-point lead at the half. Then the Thunder outscored the Pacers 34-20 in the third quarter. The Pacers fought back, shaving what was a 22-point deficit down to 10 with under two minutes remaining. But OKC hung on for the win and the championship. It’s the first championship for the franchise since they left Seattle and changed their name from the Supersonics to the Thunder. Since the move to Oklahoma, the Thunder have the second-most regular season victories, behind only the Boston Celtics. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45565932/thunder-overwhelm-pacers-game-7-franchise-first-title
The Houston Rockets have acquired 15-time All-Star and four-time Olympic gold medalist Kevin Durant in a blockbuster trade with the Phoenix Suns. In Major League Baseball – After losing the series opener Friday night, the Padres took two out of three from the visiting Royals, including a 3-2 decision yesterday on a walk-off RBI grounder by Jose Iglesias. The Dodgers took two of three from the visiting Nationals. Yesterday was a 13-7 slugfest with Shohei Ohtani driving in five runs and, in his second start since returning to the mound after surgery, pitching one scoreless inning, striking out two and allowing just one baserunner on an error. One inning was all he was scheduled for as he eases back into pitching. In San Francisco, the giants took two out of three from the visiting Red Sox. In Anaheim, the Angels lost two out of three to Houston. The Dodgers and Giants are off today. The Angels play one more game against Boston in Anaheim. And the Padres open a series hosting the Nationals.
In the NFL – Two-way college star athlete and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter has signed a four-year, $46.6m contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. $30.5 of it is a signing bonus. Hunter is the first non-quarterback not drafted first overall to get his entire signing bonus up front. He’s also the last of the top-ten draft picks this year to sign. The Jaguars traded four picks – Nos. 5, 36, 126 and a first-round pick in 2026 to Cleveland to move up three spots to be able to choose Hunter as this year’s #2 pick. They plan to use him on both offense and defense as Colorado did when he won the 2024 Heisman Trophy. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45563825/travis-hunter-signs-4-year-4665m-deal-jaguars

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says owners of his cars can earn side income by turning them into robotaxis. Yesterday, Tesla launched its eagerly-anticipated robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The limited launch used Tesla Model Y’s with a person in the front passenger seat to monitor safety. It went well and Tesla stock shot up nearly 10% in early trading today. Musk now says his robotaxis will become “like an Airbnb thing,” with the fleet of vehicles owned by Tesla supplemented by privately-owned Tesla EVs. He said that owners going away on vacation, for example, could add their vehicles to the fleet while they’re gone. Tesla would take a cut, but most of the fares would go to the owner. Musk claims the revenue made by the vehicle owner “will far exceed the actual monthly payment.” He added that Tesla is planning to rollout its Cybercab, which has no steering wheel or pedals, next year. Tesla is not the first robotaxi. Alphabet’s Waymo One was already available tin Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, with plans to expand to Atlanta and Miami. Waymo has also applied for a permit to drive autonomously in New York City with a specialist behind the wheel. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/2025062380/tesla-owners-can-make-money-by-turning-their-cars-into-robotaxis-elon-musk-says-this-is-how-it-would-work

- 1962, the movie soundtrack for “West Side Story” was at #1 where it stayed for over a year – the longest stay at the top of the album chart ever.
