Thursday’s Presidential candidates’ debate will have a number of changes to eliminate the free-for-all that recent candidates’ debates have experienced.  It won’t be overseen by the Commission on Presidential Debates as all other meet-ups have since 1988.  This one is hosted by and carried live on CNN, will have no live audience, no props or written notes allowed on stage, and microphones will be muted when the other candidate is speaking.  This will be earliest televised US general election debate since Kennedy-Nixon in 1960.  www.morningbrew.com

The city San Bernardino came in at #1 on a list no city wants to be at the top of.  Lawnstarter’s 2024 Dirtiest Cities in America ranked the 300 largest US cities on 21 total metrics including air pollution, water quality, waste management and general dissatisfaction by residents.  San Bernardino was worst – or #1, followed by Detroit, Reading PA, Newark, and San Bernardino’s neighbor to the west, Ontario.  At the bottom, or better end of the list, Redwood and Pleasanton CA were among the five cleanest cities.  In between, Escondido was #193 – so, better than most.  Temecula was #118.  San Diego, #108. Oceanside was #74 – all three, worse than most.  https://www.lawnstarter.com/blog/studies/dirtiest-cities-in-united-states/

There was a 3.6 magnitude earthquake at 12:17a just west of Salton Sea.  Only a few people reported feeling it.  But the reports came from as far away as National City and Palm Springs. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40808000/executive

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres took three out of four from the visiting Brewers over the weekend, losing only yesterday’s final game 6-2.  Milwaukee rookie pitcher Tobias Myers won his fourth straight. The Padres Michael King took his fifth loss against five wins, giving up five runs in the 2nd inning.  Saturday’s 6-4 Padres win included a career-high five hits for Jake Cronenworth.  The Dodgers and Angels split a short series at Dodger Stadium with the Angels winning 3-2 in ten innings Friday including a 455-foot homer by Shohei Ohtani.  The Dodgers won 7-2 Saturday thanks to an even slightly longer home run by Ohtani and one by second baseman Gavin Lux – both in the 3rd inning.  Both teams had yesterday off.  Today, the Dodgers play the White Sox in Chicago, The Angels host Oakland.  And the Padres host Washington.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm won 6-4 at Visalia yesterday.  But the Rawhide took four out of the six games in the series.  The Storm begin a series tomorrow at 6p hosting Rancho Cucamonga.  https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-06

In the NHL Stanley Cup finals – What looked like was going to be a wipeout has turned into a seven-game series thanks to Edmonton’s third win in a row Friday.  The Oilers routed the visiting Panthers 5-1.  Florida didn’t even score until the third period.  Since Game three, when the Panthers went ahead three games to none, the Oilers have outscored them 18 to 5.  It all comes down to tonight.  If it goes Edmonton’s way, it’ll be an historic reverse sweep and the first Oilers Stanley Cup since they won it five times in seven seasons beginning in 1984.  It would be the first time a Canadian team was won it since Montreal in 1993.  Florida has never won it.  The deciding Game 7 is tonight at 5p on ABC.  https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/40409008/nhl-playoffs-2024-stanley-cup-final-panthers-oilers-game-7-players-picks

In basketball – Boston feted its Celtics for their record-setting 18th championship Friday with the customary Duck Boat parade through the city’s streets.  Because Celtics owner Wye Grousbeck and his family couldn’t drive through the crowds to get to Boston Garden with the trophy, they ended up walking and giving fans an unexpected thrill as they displayed the trophy and banner destined for the Garden. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40402204/boston-salutes-celtics-record-18th-nba-championship-parade

In Soccer – On Saturday, the Galaxy edged Real Salt Lake 1-0 in Salt Lake City, and LAFC buried San Jose 6-2 in Carson.  This Saturday, LAFC host the Colorado Rapids and the Galaxy play the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford.

In the NFL – Following multiple offseason arrests in Alabama, the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to release defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs.  He was booked on domestic violence and burglary charges June 16.  He was previously out on bail in connection with two counts of second-degree animal cruelty in May. That bail was revoked as a result of last week’s new charges. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40420945/sources-chiefs-expected-release-isaiah-buggs-arrests

In Rugby – Yesterday, the San Diego Legion beat the visiting Houston SabreCats 37-24.  Their next game is this Saturday evening hosting Seattle at Snapdragon Stadium.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained almost 9 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up 3 tenths.  The NASDAQ fell almost three tenths.  Comex gold gained $10.50 an ounce, trading at $2,341.70.  Oil futures were up 88 cents with West Texas Intermediate Crude at $81.61 a barrel.

The cyberattack that hobbled car dealerships using software from CDK Global continues.  Hackers demanded tens of millions of dollars in ransom, which CDK plans to pay according to reports by Bloomberg Friday.  www.morningbrew.com

Hooters is the latest chain to announce the closure of dozens of locations due to rising food and labor costs.  They didn’t say exactly how many locations or where they were.  But local reports say several dozen in at least five states closed either over the weekend or within the past few weeks.  Hooters still has about 300 locations worldwide.  That’s about 12% fewer than five years ago, according to restaurant consulting firm Technomic.  Meanwhile, competitors like Twin Peaks and Dave & Busters have grown since then. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/24/food/hooters-closures/index.html

Krispy Kreme has created a line of doughnuts to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the TV sitcom, “Friends”.  But unless you’re planning a trip to the UK or Ireland, you can’t get them.  Social media is full of comments criticizing the Friends doughnuts limited availability and the overall logic of the promotion.  Said one commenter, “Friends was a huge US show, yet this is a UK thing?” But such promotions are done to gain notoriety.  It worked. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/23/business/krispy-kreme-friends-themed-doughnuts/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movies, “Inside Out 2” continued to rule, selling another $100m worth of tickets on 4,400 screens.  That’s only a third less than its debut weekend.  Most films drop by half after the first week.  “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” remained in 2nd place with $18.7m.  “The Bikeriders” debuted in third with $10m on 2,600 screens, followed by “The Garfield Movie”, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, “IF”, and the debut of “The Exorcism” with a low, $2.4m on 2,200 screens.  “Thelma” was 8th, opening in limited release with the fourth-best per-screen average of the weekend.  The total take for the top ten was down 30% from last week, but it was still the second-best weekend so far this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2024W25/

Inspections of US-bound avocados and mangoes in a major Mexican export region are on hold while the US Department of Agriculture investigates a recent assault on USDA inspectors.  A week ago, US agents were reportedly detained and beaten during a labor protest in Michoacán, where organized crime has grown alongside the avocado boom.  While the inspections are on hold, Mexico won’t be able to clear any new Michoacán avocados or mangoes for US export.   Michoacán grows nearly three-quarters of Mexico’s avocados and provided 89% of the record 2.78 billion pounds of fresh avocados imported into the US last year. On average, more than 63% of US mango imports come from Mexico.  The problem isn’t likely to last long or greatly affect your access to guacamole.  A safety incident that halted inspections of avocados in Michoacán in 2022 only lasted for about a week and never did really impact the US avo supply. Another Mexican state, Jalisco, now exports avocados to the US.  It’s business as usual there. https://apnews.com/article/mexico-us-avocados-inspections-michoacan-3779355273cbce6bcf81d2763839daa3

Yes, it was hot here this weekend.  But it’s been worse and for longer in many other places around the country and the globe.  In the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Ohio River valley, temperatures have been over 100, breaking records for days.  There’s also been record flooding in the Midwest causing evacuations.  Elsewhere, 1,400 temperature records were broken across five continents last week.  According to Climate Central as reported in the Washington Post, production of fossil fuels and resulting greenhouse gasses has made the recent heat wave twice as likely for four out of five people in the world. www.morningbrew.com

Team USA and several other countries plan to bring air conditioners to next month’s Paris Olympics over concerns that the use of eco-friendly cooling pipes instead of AC in the athletes’ village will affect their performance in the games through less quality sleep.  Paris has hyped plans to slash the carbon footprint of this year’s Olympic Games by half, making it the most sustainable Games ever.  Portable air conditioners could subvert that goal.  With an historic average of 79 degrees in July, Paris traditionally has a very pleasant summer climate.  But in 2019, the city experienced a heatwave that drove temperatures as high as 109.  Two years ago in July, temperatures hit 97 and so far this year, the weather in many parts of Europe has been no treat.  The expected high in Paris tomorrow will be 85.  The first week of July there is expected to be rainy with highs in the upper 60s.  But the French weather service, Metro France says a month from now it’s likely to be warmer than average.  Olympic organizers are looking at moving some outdoor events to earlier, cooler parts of the day and may postpone or eliminate parts of the triathlon if the heat index exceeds 90.  www.NYTimes.com https://www.bbc.com/weather/articles/cqll9v0qynqo

On this day in music history – June 24,

  • 1965, John Lennon’s second book of poetry and drawings, “A Spaniard in the Works” was published.  Like his first book, “In His Own Write” a year earlier, it was a collection of nonsensical stories and sketches.
  • In 1967, Procol Harum’s single, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” entered the Billboard chart, eventually peaking at #5.  The words were written around the melody, which was composed by the group’s organist, Matthew Fisher based on Bach’s “Orchestral Suite in D” from 230 years earlier.
  • In 1988, UB40’s bass player Earl Falconer went to prison for six months after admitting to causing his brother’s death in a car accident.

  • Five years later in 2004, another of Clapton’s Stratocasters sold at the same auction house for just shy of $1m, making it the most expensive guitar in the world.
  • In 2007, the White Stripes were at #1 with their sixth and final studio album, “Icky Thump”.  It won the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy the following spring.
  • In 2016, the “Stairway to Heaven” plagiarism case was decided with the jury finding that Led Zeppelin did not copy the opening chords of the iconic song from another one several years earlier by Spirit.  The deciding argument by Zeppelin’s defense lawyers seemed to be that the chord progression was very common and had been in use for hundreds of years.
