There was a crash between a big rig and a minivan just after the morning rush on the southbound 215 in Menifee this morning. Three adults and three juveniles suffered moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital. It happened just after 9a just past the Newport Road exit, blocking the #2 and #3 lanes. Traffic was still slow as of 11a. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/injuries-reported-after-big-rig-minivan-collide-215-freeway-menifee
Even though crude oil prices are plunging, a new report says retail gasoline prices in California could soar to well over $8 a gallon next year with the planned closure of two refineries. Citing environmental regulations, high operating costs and market dynamics, Phillips 66 in Los Angeles and Valero’s Bay Area refineries will permanently close in 2026, leaving 9% less refining capacity in the state. Other factors including maintenance could cut collective capacity at times by 21%. USC Professor Michael A. Mische says that could push retail gas prices to between $7.34 and $8.43 a gallon by the end of next year. He says California’s one third-higher-than-nationwide gasoline prices are largely self-created and that there is no evidence that refiners are price-gouging or manipulating prices. He says high prices here are due to declining in-state production, increasing regulations and regulatory costs, environmental initiatives, California’s special gasoline blend which prevents importing gasoline refined elsewhere, and high taxes. Gov. Newsom has asked the California Energy Commission to work closely with refiners and to recommend by next week, changes at the state level to ensure a more stable fuel supply. https://patch.com/california/across-ca/ca-gas-prices-could-hit-8-gallon-amid-refinery-concerns
A group called Hemet Rising wants the city to annex 34k acres of county land including Diamond Valley Lake and a large area east of the city, increasing Hemet’s population by 28k to about 120k and making it the fourth largest city in Riverside County behind Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Corona. More than 1,500 registered voters in the targeted unincorporated areas signed a petition that was submitted to the Riverside Local Agency Formation Commission to begin the annexation process. Enlarging the city would generate $14.2m in revenue while costing $11.1m for new services including about 67 new city hires. Critics say the additional land and population won’t attract new investment or businesses to Henet because of the low average household income in the area – just under $53k a year, which is less than half the average income in Temecula. . https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/06/23/how-hemet-could-become-riverside-countys-fourth-largest-city/

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres fell further behind in the NL West with a 10-6 loss to the visiting Washington Nationals yesterday. San Diego is now 5 ½ games behind the Dodgers and 3 ½ behind the Giants, both of whom did not play yesterday. The Angels had a 9-5 win over the visiting Red Sox last night. Both series continue today. The Dodgers open a series in Denver against the last-place Rockies and the Giants open a series hosting Miami.
Padres star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. yesterday filed suit against Big League Advance in an attempt to void the future earnings contract he signed with the lender when he was 17 and playing in a minor league. He received $2m up front in exchange for 10% of future earnings. Now that he’s on a 14-year, $340m contract with the Padres, signed in 2021, he will contractually owe BLA $34m, and he’ll still be on the hook for a portion of any contracts after his current one with the Padres. The lawsuit alleges BLA used predatory tactics, presented him with what it said was an “investment deal” which was actually an illegal loan, hid its unlicensed status, and pushed him into loan terms that are illegal in California. Tatis says he’s suing not just for himself, but to protect future young players who don’t know how to protect themselves financially. BLA declined to comment on the Tatis lawsuit. About a week ago, BLA sued former Padres outfielder Franmil Reyes claiming breach of contract and that Reyes owes them about $700k on his future earnings loan. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45571919/padres-fernando-tatis-jr-sues-big-league-advance-void-future-earnings-deal-signed-minor-leaguer
In the NFL – Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he’s pretty sure this will be his final NFL season. The 41-year old four-time league MVP is on a one-year, $13.65m deal with Pittsburgh with $10m guaranteed and incentives that could boost his salary to $19.5m. Rodgers was with Green Bay for his first 18 NFL seasons. Most recently, he was with the Jets. This will be his 21st professional season. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45575766/steelers-aaron-rodgers-pretty-sure-final-season
In the NBA – The Boston Celtics are trading Jrue Holiday to Portland for Anfernee Simons and two second round draft picks. Simons joins Boston on an expiring contract. Holiday is owned $72m over the final two years of his current deal. More trades are expected in Boston this off-season. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45572537/celtics-trading-jrue-holiday-trail-blazers-sources-say
Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford is expected to sign a three-year contract extension worth $60m. He’ll still be trade-eligible this season. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45570087/sources-mavericks-extend-gafford-3-year-60m-deal
The Knicks have now completed three formal interviews for their head coaching position. Assistant Micah Nori from the Timberwolves is the latest. Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins are the other candidates under consideration to replace Tom Thibodeau, who was unexpectedly fired after leading the Knicks to their first conference final in 25 years. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45574256/sources-wolves-micah-nori-3rd-interview-knicks-coach
In Soccer – Tomorrow, San Diego plays at Vancouver and the Galaxy play the Rapids in Colorado
In Rugby – The Major League Rugby championship game between New England and Houston is this Saturday at 11a at Pawtucket, Rhone Island.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks had major gains across the board on news of a ceasefire in the Israel-Iran conflict, in spite of questions over whether it is being fully honored. The Dow was up 1.1%. The S&P 500 gained 1%. The Nasdaq rose 1.4%. Comex gold fell $64.80, or almost 2% to $3,329.80 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures plunged more than 6%, or $4.29 to $64.23 a barrel. That puts the price of oil well below where it was before the latest Middle East conflict.
Although he’d left the door open for the possibility of a prime lending rate cut in July, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell all but closed that door today in his semiannual monetary policy report to Congress, saying anticipated higher inflation numbers will prevent any rate cuts for now. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/24/economy/fed-chair-powell-testimony-capitol-hill
Peoples Union USA is calling for a public boycott of McDonald’s beginning today and lasting through next Monday. Group leader, John Schwarz explains that it’s a demand for “fair taxes, an end to price gouging, real equality, and corporate accountability.” The response from McDonald’s is that they welcome honest dialog but feel the claims by Peoples Union USA are misleading and distort reality. Schwarz gained national attention earlier this year when his group called for an “economic boycott” of Walmart, Target and Amazon for several reasons – most notably their rollback of diversity, equality and inclusion programs (DEI). Boycotts are notoriously difficult to organize and make a meaningful dent in a company’s bottom line. But this one comes at a difficult time for Mickey D’s, who’ve had two consecutive quarters of sales declines and currently has an image that has been tarnished in the eyes of price-conscious customers. The average price of some menu items has soared as much as 40% since 2019. The company says, it’s only to cover costs. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/24/food/mcdonalds-boycott
In a separate issue, it was announced today that McDonald’s partnership with Krispy Kreme is over. The chain will stop selling its doughnuts at McDonald’s restaurants on July 2. McDonald’s says the collaboration was going well at the 2,400 company and franchise stores where the confections were sold. But the business model wasn’t working for Krispy Kreme. The two companies had paused the partnership in May after slowing sales. Krispy Kreme says it will now focus on expansion through “high-volume retail points of distribution” and more international franchises. Shares in Krispy Kreme have plunged 73% this year. In the first quarter, the company posted a $33m loss. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/24/mcdonalds-and-krispy-kreme-end-doughnut-partnership.html

Teen idol and actor, Bobby Sherman has died at the age of 81. He came to fame singing pop hits on TV’s “Shindig!” including “Little Woman”, “Julie, Do Ya Love Me”, and “Easy Come, Easy Go”. He gained wider fame as the youngest of three brothers in the 1969 TV show “Here Come the Brides” based on the movie, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”. Sherman reinvented himself in his post-idol decades, finding new roles far from the screen or concert stage, becoming an EMT and a trainer with the LAPD. His wife, Brigette announced three months ago that Bobby had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. https://variety.com/2025/music/news/bobby-sherman-dead-singer-actor-1236439296/
Fred Smith, founder and chairman of FedEx died Saturday from natural causes in Memphis at the age of 80. The Marine Corp veteran and Yale graduate founded Federal Express in 1973, pioneering overnight air shipment with a “hub and spoke” fulfillment plan he devised in college. A turning point in that first year of operations became legendary. With FedEx close to bankruptcy, Smith took the company’s last $5k to Las Vegas and wagered it on a blackjack game. He won $27k, which bought him enough time to get more funding and restructure the company, which hasn’t look back since. https://newsroom.fedex.com/newsroom/global-english/frederick-w-smith-visionary-founder-of-fedex-dies-at-80
Kings Hawaiian, the maker of sweet buns and rolls in the distinct bright orange packaging today unveiled a modernized logo and updated packaging for its 75th anniversary. The crown logo was first introduced in 2018 with a capital serif font. The new logo is rounded with the brand name in a softer, more hand-written font … “Cushier”, like the rolls, according to the company’s marketing manager. The orange color is now warmer and includes a band of flowers representing the gift of a Hawaiian lei. Trying to maintain tradition that has helped King’s Hawaiian buck the trend of people buying less bread is a delicate balancing act. The company debuted television ads with former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning last year and plans to show off its new packaging during an upcoming NASCAR race with its racing partner, Joe Gibbs Racing. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/24/food/kings-hawaiian-rebrand
On this day in music history – June 24,
- 1965, John Lennon’s second book of poetry and drawings, “A Spaniard in the Works” was published. Like his first book, “In His Own Write” a year earlier, it was a collection of nonsensical stories and sketches.
- In 1967, Procol Harum’s single, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” entered the Billboard chart, eventually peaking at #5. The words were written around the melody, which was composed by the group’s organist, Matthew Fisher based on Bach’s “Orchestral Suite in D” from 230 years earlier.

- Five years later in 2004, another of Clapton’s Stratocasters sold at the same auction house for just shy of $1m, making it the most expensive guitar in the world.
- In 2007, the White Stripes were at #1 with their sixth and final studio album, “Icky Thump”. It won the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy the following spring.
- In 2016, the “Stairway to Heaven” plagiarism case was decided with the jury finding that Led Zeppelin did not copy the opening chords of the iconic song from another one several years earlier by Spirit. The deciding argument by Zeppelin’s defense lawyers seemed to be that the chord progression was very common and had been in use for hundreds of years.
