LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A pedestrian was struck and killed around 1:50 this morning on the eastbound 78 freeway between Jefferson and El Camino Real in Oceanside.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  A witness told CHP the vehicle involved took off eastbound.  Oceanside PD reported finding a Mercedes convertible with damage consistent with the incident in the parking lot of the Winco Foods store on South El Camino Real. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/25/pedestrian-struck-killed-on-state-route-78-in-oceanside/

The Temecula Traffic Safety Commission will consider lowering speed limits on several city streets at its meeting in City Hall this Thursday.  Among the recommendations following a state-mandated traffic study, lower the speed limit on three separate sections of Butterfield Stage Road from 55 to 50 miles an hour.  Set a limit of 45 MPH on a portion of Ynez Road from the city limits to Date Street that is currently not posted.  And lower the limit on two other sections of Ynez from 45 to 40 MPH.  According to a report, other roads studied do not require speed adjustments. https://patch.com/california/temecula/speed-limits-likely-drop-these-temecula-streets

SDG&E has agreed to pay a $71k fine levied by the Public Utilities Commission over a power shutoff affecting 5,300 utility customers on Thanksgiving weekend three years ago.  Lines were de-energized in East County to minimize wildfire danger during a Santa Ana wind event.  Though the commission didn’t fault SDG&E for doing that, they did find the utility failed provide proper notification to some customers, open a community resource center in a timely manner, and include a link on its website for a report issued after the event.  The agreement for SDG&E to pay up is expected to be approved at the PUC meeting in San Francisco, August 1. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/24/sdge-agrees-to-pay-71000-fine-over-2021-power-shutoff/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres pulled off another walk-off win, taking Game One of a series hosting the Washington Nationals 7-6 in ten innings last night. San Diego blew an early three-run lead with the Nationals catching up in the 7th.  Washington scored three more in the top of the tenth.  In the bottom half, trailing by three, center fielder Jackson Merrill singled-in two runs.  Then Jurickson Profar completed the comeback with a two-RBI single.  In Chicago, the Dodgers shut out the White Sox 3-0.  In Anaheim, the Angels whupped the A’s 5-1.  Taylor Ward’s 2-run homer in the first inning did the trick and Griffin Canning pitched 7 strong innings for the win.  All three series continue today.

San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. may not see action again until after the All-Star break.  He’s had a stress reaction in his right thigh for the entire season and is now on the 10-day disabled list because of it.  Though he’s been playing through it, doctors say it won’t get better without rest. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40424506/padres-place-outfielder-fernando-tatis-jr-10-day-il

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm begin a series tonight at 6p hosting Rancho Cucamonga.  https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-06

In the NHL Stanley Cup finals – Last night, the Florida Panthers cut short Edmonton’s historic comeback, winning Game Seven 2-1.  Sam Reinhart scored the game winner early in the second period.  This is Florida’s first Stanley Cup and the culmination of a climb from three decades of failures and frustration to the top of professional hockey.  It almost became their greatest failure as they blew a three games to none lead, allowing Edmonton three straight wins.  That’s only happened twice in the past and no three-nothing leader had gone on to lose four in a row since the 1942 Detroit Red Wings. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/40357551/nhl-playoffs-2024-stanley-cup-florida-panthers-journey-franchise-legacy

In Soccer – This Saturday, LAFC hosts the Colorado Rapids and the Galaxy play the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford.

In the NFL – The Carolina Panthers will stay in Charlotte for the foreseeable future.  The city council there voted Monday to approve a joint $800m stadium renovation plan that’ll keep the team there through 2045.  The city will spring for $650m.  Team owner David Tepper will pay the remaining $150m up front.  Tepper has already invested $117m into stadium upgrades and committed to another $421 over the term of the deal. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40425682/charlotte-city-council-approves-carolina-panthers-stadium-renovation-plan

In Rugby – the San Diego Legion’s next game is Saturday evening hosting Seattle at Snapdragon Stadium.

Organizers for the 2028 LA Summer Olympics have announced a series of proposed venue changes that would bring the Equestrian and Para Equestrian events to Temecula.  Galway Downs is considered by the organizing committee to be the only facility in Southern California large enough to accommodate all required disciplines – dressage, jumping and eventing in one location.  The 240-acre facility is on the eastern outskirts of Temecula off Highway 79. https://patch.com/california/temecula/equestrian-olympic-events-be-held-temecula-under-new-proposal

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed exactly opposite of yesterday.  The Dow fell 9 tenths of a percent.  The S&P was up a small fraction.  The NASDAQ was up a half percent.  Comex gold fell $14.50 an ounce to $2,329.90.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 62 cents to $81.01 a barrel.

Part of the reason for the NASDAQ’s rise today was a bounce back for Nvidia stock, which had been taking a beating lately.  Five down days had if off by 13% before today’s rally.  It had briefly eclipsed Microsoft and Apple as the world’s most valuable company.  It fell back to 3rd place a few days ago.  https://www.google.com/search?q=nvidia+stock&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS952US952&oq=nvidia+st&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDQgAEAAYgwEYsQMYgAQyDQgAEAAYgwEYsQMYgAQyDQgBEAAYgwEYsQMYgAQyCggCEAAYsQMYgAQyBggDEEUYOTINCAQQABiDARixAxiABDINCAUQABiDARixAxiABDINCAYQABiDARixAxiABDIGCAcQRRg8qAIIsAIB&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Talk of the Federal Reserve reducing interest rates has gone from three likely cuts this year to last month’s prediction of just one to some key policymakers now saying there won’t be any.  At an event hosted by the Policy Exchange think tank in London, Fed governor Michelle Bowman dropped that bomb today.  She said US inflation remains “elevated and I still see a number of upside inflation risks …”  Meanwhile supply chains have mostly normalized, labor has leveled off, and US immigration policy may soon be more restrictive, limiting potential new job seekers, none of which will help ease inflation. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/economy/fed-officials-talking-down-rate-cut/index.html

The CDK Global software breach continues to wreak havoc at 15k auto dealerships across the country.  Though CDK promised to resume normal operations within days, some say it will take months, maybe even a year to fully recover.  In Massachusetts, it’s not possible for dealers to issue new car registrations.  So, buyers have to go to the state’s equivalent of California’s DMV on their own.  The problem is, their DMV stopped taking walkups for registration due to the rush.  And if you don’t register your new car within seven days, both the buyer and dealer are subject to penalties.  Most paperwork at affected dealers is now being done by hand, causing huge delays. Parts and vehicle inventories are being done by hand.  In San Diego, a Kia dealer, unable to manage service appointments through their automated system, has stopped taking appointments and walk-ins have been suspended until next week.  The net effect is business is being lost and customers going to other dealers, creating higher than normal demand there with all the fallout that creates.  Other automotive dealership software companies are on high alert for cyber attacks similar to the two that hit CDK over the past two weeks.  Some have stopped integrating their systems with CDK as a precautionary measure. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/business/car-dealership-cdk-cyber-attack/index.html

Microsoft is facing potential fines from the European Union over its bundling of Teams and Office.  That fine could be up to 10% of Microsoft’s global revenue, which totaled $211b in the most recent financial year.  The EU’s executive arm, the European Commission opened an investigation into Microsoft’s software pricing practices a year ago following a 2020 complaint by the messaging app, Slack, which is now owned by Salesforce. Their claim was that bundling Teams, which includes messaging, calling and video meetings with Office violates anti-competition laws. Just a day earlier, EU regulators accused Apple of breaching the Digital Markets Act, which went into effect in March.  If charges are confirmed, Apple faces a huge fine as well.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/tech/microsoft-teams-eu-antitrust/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Singer for the LA-based band Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock – real name, Seth Binzer has died at the age of 49.  Cause of death has not been determined.  Binzer had spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction.  Crazy Town’s song “Butterfly” was a chart-topper in 2000. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/06/25/seth-binzer-lead-singer-of-crazy-town-dies-at-49/

We haven’t reported on retail gasoline prices in a while because there’s not much to report.  Local and national prices for a gallon of regular haven’t changed in over a week – still $4.79 in San Diego County and $3.45 nationwide.  Both are well down from a month ago and within pennies of this same time last year.  Today’s lowest local price is $4.23 at Oceana Gas on El Camino Real at Vista Rey in Oceanside.  In Riverside County, it’s $4.39 at Murrieta Sam’s Club and the three area Costcos.  At least one independent station in Hemet is below $4.  And if you’re traveling through Cabazon, the Chevron at Seminole and Malki Roads is $3.89. https://www.riversidegasprices.com/Map_Gas_Prices.aspx

With the high cost of everything causing many Americans to cut back, they’re not completely eliminating visits to sit-down restaurant.  But they are looking for bargains.  That’s why business is booming at the Texas Roadhouse and LongHorn Steakhouse chains.  In the first quarter of this year, sales at company-owned Texas Roadhouse locations open at least 18 months jumped 8.4% compared to the previous year.  LongHorn, which is owned by Darden, who also own Olive Garden, reported sales up 4%.  This is the second time during economic bad times for restaurants overall that these two chains have prospered.  That’s because they make customers feel like they’re getting a good deal when they need it most.  They’re seen as an affordable luxury.  According to competitor, Cheesecake Factory, the average per person check at LongHorn is $26.  At Texas Roadhouse, it’s $22.   That compares favorabliy now that it’s easy to spend $10 or more per person at a fast food joint. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/tech/microsoft-teams-eu-antitrust/index.html
