A former Escondido High School math teacher was sentenced yesterday to six years in state prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of sex crimes with two underage students.  32-year old Kyiri Tisdale was arrested on campus last August and charged with more than two dozen felony counts.  His plea deal also requires Tisdale to register as a sex offender.   https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/24/former-escondido-high-teacher-sentenced-to-prison-in-student-sex-abuse-case/

A youth on an electric bike was seriously injured Monday evening in Menifee when struck by a vehicle at Bellamy Lane and Scott Road.  The teenager was riding southbound on Bellamy and tried to cross Scott without having the right-of-way.  An eastbound sedan was unable to stop and tried to veer away from the bike, crashing through a fence.   The boy’s injuries were non-life-threatening. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/06/24/menifee-boy-on-e-bike-struck-seriously-injured-while-going-through-intersection/

A new report from Retirement Living ranks Oceanside as the second-best place to retire in California.  Those age 65 and over make up 20% of the city’s population – one of the highest rates in the state.  Only 8% of them live in poverty, compared with the 11.3% statewide average.  The city’s 8 ¼% sales tax is among the state’s lowest.  But it’s still not a cheap place to live.  The median home price is $851k – just $9k short of the statewide median.  And the median rent in Oceanside is $2,300 a month.   Roseville, a suburb outside Sacramento topped Retirement Living’s list, followed by Oceanside, Torrance, Vacaville, Richmond, and Modesto. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/oceanside-among-best-cities-retire-ca-report

Temperatures will be in the low 80s today in Pala, rising to the upper 80s this weekend through the middle of next week.  That’s looking pretty good compared to the heatwave that’s gripping much of the eastern half of the country.  The full local forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres edged the visiting Nationals 4-3 last night.  Padre Martin Maldonado tied it up in the 5^th with a solo home run and Jose Iglesias brought in the eventual winning run with a bases-loaded ground-out in the 6^th.  Jason Adam got the win for his 1 ½ innings of relief pitching when the lead changed hands.  The rubber game of the series begins this afternoon at 1p at Petco Park.  The Dodgers beat the Rockies in Denver 9-7.  It was Colorado’s 61^st loss of the season.  That puts them on pace to beat the White Sox record of 121 losses, set last season.  You have to go back to 1899 – two years before the modern era of baseball to find a worse win-loss record.  Miami beat the Giants 4-2.  That leaves them 4 ½ games behind the first-place Dodgers and one game ahead of the Padres.  The Angels edged Boston 3-2 in ten innings. Christian Moore hit both the tying and game-winning home runs for Anaheim.  The Angels drafted him #8 overall just 11 months ago. Yesterday was his 10^th day in “The Show”. 

In the NBA – In a joint statement yesterday, it was confirmed that Mark Walter will acquire majority ownership of the Lakers with the deal expected to close in the third or fourth quarter this year.  Jeannie Buss, whose family has been the majority owner for the past 46 years will remain as governor of the team and oversee day-to-day operations for the foreseeable future. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45581876/mark-walter-lakers-say-sale-expected-close-later-year

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow was down 3 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 gained a small fraction.  The Nasdaq was up a quarter percent.  Gold gained $12.70 on the Comex, trading at $3,346.60 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained back some of yesterday’s losses, up $1.28 to $65.65 a barrel.

Just ahead of the formal release of its findings on the mid-flight door plug blowout on an Alaska Airlines flight in January of 2024, the National Transportation Safety Board said yesterday that both Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration were to blame for the incident.  No one was killed or seriously injured, which the NTSB says was a miracle.  According to the forthcoming final report, workers at Boeing failed to replace four bolts – any one of which could have prevented the door plug from detaching.  The bolts were nowhere to be found and there is no record of which workers were responsible for the omission.  The FAA came under criticism for not doing a better job of oversight and failing to “adequately identify and ensure that Boeing addressed” nonconformance issues at its factories.  The NTSB noted that both parties have improved their safety processes since the accident, but the agency wants to see a period of safety and quality consistency before it lifts the 737 monthly production cap.  The Department of Justice told a federal judge last month that it reached a tentative agreement with Boeing to drop a criminal case over Boeing crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. https://www.npr.org/2025/06/24/nx-s1-5442564/ntsb-boeing-737-max-door-plug-alaska-airlines

Chicago-based online job listing company CareerBuilder + Monster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday.  The two companies had merged in September.  Monster set out to revolutionize putting job seekers together with company recruiters 30 years ago.  CareerBuilder has been doing the same for well over 20 years.  But times change.  CareerBuilder + Monster has also agreed to sell its software services business for state and federal governments to Canadian software company, Valsoft. https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/online-job-listing-company-careerbuilding-monster-files-bankruptcy

With only about half the normal rainfall and temperatures expected to rise towards the middle of summer, SDG&E is preparing for above-normal wildfire potential around the county.  SDG&E’s Wildfire and Climate Resilience Center monitors more than 130 cameras and 223 weather stations all over San Diego County.  They coordinate their own data and that from the National Weather Service with artificial intelligence.  This year has been unusual, which is becoming the norm almost everywhere.  San Diego was spared from the worst destruction as six waves of Santa Ana winds tore through Southern California in January, leading to 14 major wildfires that destroyed more than 18k homes and other structures.  SDG&E issued two separate public safety power shutoffs over the course of three weeks.  The most commonly-affected communities for PSPS’s are Alpine, Julian, Fallbrook and Valley Center along with surrounding areas.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/23/above-normal-fire-potential-sdge-prepares-for-peak-wildfire-season/

The latest S&P Case-Shiller Indices report was released yesterday ranking home real estate prices in the 20 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S.  Price gains in April for San Diego continued to slow and came close to negative territory.  Prices here increased 1% over one year earlier with the median price in April at $990,625, putting San Diego in 15^th place among the 20.  The fastest-rising markets in April were New York – up 8%, Chicago – up 6%, and Detroit – up 5 ½%.  Case-Shiller tracks repeat sales of identical single-family houses with seasonal adjustments.  It’s often seen as a bellwether for the economy overall.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/24/san-diegos-home-price-gains-continue-to-lag-nation/

Amazon announced yesterday that it’s expanding its rapid delivery service to 4k additional rural towns across the U.S. by the end of this year.  The online retail giant already has same and next-day delivery in about 1k rural areas with extremely positive feedback from customers.  Statistics bear that out.  Amazon reports the number of items delivered on the same or next day in the U.S. is up 30% so far this year compared to last year, and we’re still two weeks away from this year’s 96-hour Prime Day sale.  www.morningbrew.com.

• 1964 – at the height of the British Invasion of the American music charts, an American topped the British charts for the first time in 47 weeks.  It was Roy Orbison with “It’s Over”. 
• In 1966, Jackie Wilson was arrested for inciting a riot and refusing police orders to stop his show at a nightclub in Port Arthur, Texas.  He was later convicted only for drunkenness and fined $30.

ORDERS

• Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments.  Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
• Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places.  It’s now only a recommendation.  Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis.  They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices.  Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended.  Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
• County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began.  They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
• Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours.  But no test is necessary.

 

PANDEMIC SERVICES

• All enrolled American Indian and Alaskan Natives can request Non-Recurrent, Short-Term Benefits through the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association’s TANF program.  Details at the SCTCA Tribal TANF web page.   https://sctca.net/tribal-tanf/
• Rite-Aid offers Covid-19 testing by appointment at no cost for anyone 18 or older even if they don’t have symptoms.  Results take three to five days.  Instant test results are available at some locations on certain days.  Regular testing Monday through Friday 10a to 8p and Saturdays and Sundays 10a to 5p at the Rite-Aids on South Mission in Fallbrook, Cole Grade Road in Valley Center and 1201 South Coast Highway in Oceanside.
• CVS Health has free drive-thru COVID-19 testing at select pharmacy locations nationwide.  You must meet CDC criteria as well as state and age guidelines.  Qualify yourself, find a location, and make the appointment online at www.CVS.com
• San Diego County has a list of free Covid-19 testing sites that it operates dawn to dusk
• County Behavioral Health also has resources for Taking Care of Your Family During Disease Outbreaks and Managing Your Mental Health during pandemic. 
• CBH’s number for the Access & Crisis Line to help manage stress and anxiety is 888 724 7240.  In San Diego County you can also call 211.
• Because air quality affects breathing which is a concern with COVID-19, Current local air quality by zip code from the EPA and SoCalAQMD is available at AirNow.

 

BUSINESS & FINANCE

• Here’s a list of resources for North County businesses from the San Diego North Economic Development Council.
• SDG&E is offering a bill discount program to help customers impacted by the pandemic.  A pair of plans with applications available online at SDGE.com could lower utility bills by 18 to 30% for those who’ve recently become unemployed or are receiving unemployment benefits.
• All DMV services are now online with increased grace periods for expiring licenses, IDs and vehicle registrations.  Not all commercial licenses have grace periods or can be completed fully online.

In an emergency, one of Pala Rez Radio^TM‘s resources for obtaining information is local amateur radio operators.  Even if you don’t have a Ham license you can monitor their frequencies:  Fallbrook repeater 146.175, Palomar repeater 146.730, RACES repeater 147.195, on any radio that receives the 2 meter band.  There are “smart phone” apps that do this too.
