LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The third of four weeks of the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar begins today.  Due to staffing issues, we’ve had to cancel today’s scheduled live broadcast from the Fair.

There was a fire in Del Mar yesterday.  Nothing much left of it today but a little smoke – which is ironic, since Smokey Robinson is tonight’s headliner at the Fair’s Grandstand concert.  It began in heavy brush on the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve around 3p yesterday.  About 2,500 people in the Del Mar Heights area were evacuated to the fairgrounds.  Another 1,400 were put on notice as onshore winds pushed the fire over the bluffs towards hilltop homes.  The fire burned about 19 acres before being brought under control.  Evacuations were lifted by late afternoon.  Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.   https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/25/crews-battling-brush-fire-near-torrey-pines-state-beach/

A rollover crash just after midnight last night in Bonsall was apparently caused by loose dogs in the vehicle.  The minivan driver became distracted by his dogs moving about and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to run into a hillside and flip over onto its roof on Gopher Canyon Road near Hoxie Ranch Road.  A CHP officer who happened to be driving behind the van called for medial help.  The driver suffered only minor cuts and scrapes.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/driver-dogs-escape-serious-injury-in-bonsall-rollover-crash

The grand opening of Ziggy’s Coffee at the San Pasqual tribe’s Horizon Fuel Center got delayed by a day due to computer problems on Monday.  They carried it over through yesterday.  It’s the first tribal partnership for Ziggy’s who say they hope to add more SoCal reservation locations in the future.  The 650 square foot store at 31269 Valley Center Road is Ziggy’s second California location.  The chain now has 85 stores in 18 states. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/25/san-pasqual-tribe-brings-ziggis-coffee-to-the-backcountry/

Pala weather is in a groove for the next week or more with sunny afternoons and highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and overnight lows around 60.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the Nationals 9-7 in a fireworks-filled game.  But not the 4th of July kind.  In the first inning, a bench-clearing scuffle happened at the plate with Jurickson Profar batting when Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz put a hand on Profar’s shoulder.  Manny Machado was on deck and tried to get in between them.  In the dustup, Padres manager Mike Shildt was ejected from the game.  In his at-bat right after Profar got on base, Machado launched a two-run homer scoring both.  Profar came back in the 6th to hit a grand slam scoring Higashioka, Johnson and Arraez, giving the Padres a five-run lead that they held onto for the rest of the game.  Playing for a paltry one million dollars this year, Profar is having a career season with 11 home runs so far.  He’s likely to make the All-Star team.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40434347/jurickson-profar-hits-grand-slam-5-innings-dustup-nationals

In Chicago, the Dodgers edged the White Sox 4-3.  Shohei Ohtani hit a National League-leading 24th home run this season.  The Angels beat the A’s 7-5 as center fielder Mickey Moniak hit his first career grand slam.  All three series continue today

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm won 3-1 over Rancho Cucamonga last night at Storm Stadium.  Game 2 of 6 is tonight. https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-06

In Soccer – This Saturday, LAFC hosts the Colorado Rapids and the Galaxy play the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford.

In the NFL – The city council of Jacksonville voted 14-1 last night to approve an agreement between the Jaguars and the city for a $1.4b renovation of EverBank Stadium.  The city will be responsible for 55% of the overall cost.  Construction can begin once the deal is approved by two thirds of the NFL owners at the league’s October meetings in Atlanta.  It should be done in time for the 2028 season with an accompanying 30-year lease for the Jags.  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40432558/jacksonville-city-council-approves-renovation-jaguars-everbank-stadium

In Rugby – the San Diego Legion’s next game is Saturday evening hosting Seattle at Snapdragon Stadium.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mostly up.  The Dow gained a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a small fraction.  The NASDAQ was up a quarter percent.  Gold fell $18.50 an ounce on the Comex, trading at $2,312.30.  Oil futures were up.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude gained 20 cents to $81.03 a barrel.

Stock in Chipotle dipped as expected as a 50-for-1 stock split took effect.  Shares in General Mills were down after revenue reportedly missed goals.  Stock in Whirlpool rallied on news that Bosch may try to buy the American appliance giant.  Moderna stock fell after release of data that its RSV vaccine trails that of rivals after 18 months on the marketplace. www.marketwatch.com

Consumer confidence is down this month.  The Conference Board’s latest consumer confidence index fell to 100.4 in June, down from 101.3 in May.  It reinforces what’s become a running theme in America.  That despite continued economic growth and a strong labor market, people are feeling beaten up by nagging inflation and high lending rates. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/economy/us-consumer-confidence-june/index.html

Sales of newly built homes fell unexpectedly last month.  The segment which is only about 10% of the residential real estate market, fell 11.3% in May compared with the month prior.  That’s the steepest decline since September 2022 and the lowest level since November – a traditionally slow sales month.  The actual number of homes sold was about 5% worse than expected.  As a result, new home construction and building permits, which are a bellwether for construction are down to levels not seen since 2020.  Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Monday announced $100m in funding to finance affordable housing over the next three years.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/26/economy/us-new-home-sales-may/index.html

Over a half million Ford F-150 pickups, the biggest-selling vehicle model in the U.S. are being recalled due to an electronic glitch that may cause the transmission to suddenly downshift.  All the vehicles being recalled this time are from the 2014 model year.  Five years ago, Ford recalled 1.2m F-150s from the 2011 through 2013 model years for the same issue.  It happens when there’s a loss of signal between a speed sensor and control module for the six-speed automatic transmission.  The fix is a no-cost to the owner software upgrade to the control module.  Letters will go out to owners in a few days.  The software update will be available some time in the next three months. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/business/ford-recalling-550000-trucks/index.html

And Tesla is once again recalling its Cybertruck … actually twice again.  This will be the third and fourth recall of almost all of the 12k Cybertrucks now on the road.  This time they’re about pieces that might fall off – the huge single windshield wiper and a piece of plastic trim along the edge of the truck bed. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/cars/tesla-recalling-cybertruck/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The US Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy has declared gun violence a public health crisis in America.  It’s hardly a new issue.  Organizations including the American Medical Association have highlighted the increasing burden of firearm injuries and death.  Murthy says it’s reached a new level of urgency.  It is now the leading cause of death among kids and teens.  54% of American adults say they or a relative have experienced a firearm-related incident.  And 60% of Americans are worried about losing someone they care about to gun violence.   The Surgeon General’s plan calls for investment in research and data leading to policy interventions.  https://www.statnews.com/2024/06/25/gun-violence-public-health-crisis-surgeon-general-declaration/

In Denmark, the world’s first carbon emissions tax on livestock goes into effect next week.  Danish dairy farmers will begin paying $96 per cow with other new livestock levies beginning in 2030.  Denmark is a major dairy and pork exporter.  Agriculture is the country’s biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.  Its government is in the process of investing $3.7b in things like reforestation and establishing wetlands to meet the country’s climate goals.  The Danish dairy industry welcomes the measure and its goals.  But some farmers are angry about it.  There have been protests across Europe about environmental regulation and excessive red tape.  According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 12% of global emissions in 2015 were from livestock farming. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/26/business/denmark-cows-carbon-tax/index.html
