In Major League Baseball – The Padres’ Nick Pivetta struck out ten across the first seven innings of yesterday’s final game hosting the Nationals. Final score 1-0 with Pivetta getting his 8th win of the season against 2 losses. The Padres took two out of three in the series. They didn’t gain any ground on the Dodgers, who once again beat the hapless Rockies in Denver – this time 8-1. But they did move into a tie with the Giants for second place – 5 ½ games behind the Dodgers. The Giants lost to the visiting Marlins 8-5 in ten innings. The Angels beat Boston 5-2, sweeping that series in Anaheim. The Angels and Padres have today off. The Giants finish their series hosting Miami and the Dodgers, with Clayton Kershaw starting on the mound finish their series in Denver this afternoon.
The 22-year old fan who yelled something about Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte’s late mother, who died in a car accident eight years ago has been banned indefinitely from all Major League ballparks. 31-year old Marte was brought to tears by the incident, which happened while he was at bat in the seventh inning in Tuesday’s game against the White Sox in Chicago. It’s not known exactly what was said, but Diamondback personnel heard it and asked that the fan be ejected. Marte received applause from the Chicago crowd during his first at bat last night as the scoreboard displayed the message: “Baseball is family. The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte.” Marte went hitless including two strikeouts in that game. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45582480/white-sox-ban-fan-taunt-ketel-marte-late-mother
In the NBA – In last night’s NBA draft, Cooper Flagg was the #1 pick, going to the Dallas Mavericks. They’re hoping the not-yet 19-year old Duke forward will be their next franchise superstar. They traded their last one – Luka Doncic to the Lakers five months ago. As a freshman, Flagg was a consensus All-American and won several national player of the year awards including the Wooden and Naismith trophies, averaging 19.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and leading the Blue Devils to a 35 and 4 season including an appearance in this year’s NCAA Final Four. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45585367/mavericks-pick-cooper-flagg-no-1-2025-nba-draft
Dylan Harper out of Rutgers went second overall to San Antonio. VJ Edgecombe from Baylor went to the 76ers. Another Duke player, Kon Knueppel was chosen fourth by Charlotte. https://www.espn.com/nba/draft/rounds/_/season/2025
The Brooklyn Nets entered the draft with picks #8, 19, 22, 26 and 27 with the general consensus that they’d trade at least a couple of them. But they didn’t, becoming the first team in league history to make five selections in the opening round of the NBA draft. Four of their five picks were guards, including three point guards. Their top pick was Egor Demin, a 6-foot-9 point guard from Russia via BYU. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45587689/nets-keep-all-five-first-round-picks-select-four-guards
The draft continues tonight beginning at 5p.
In the NHL – The player’s union and the league are discussing expanding the regular season from the current 82 to 84 games.

A San Diego City Council committee decided yesterday that a proposal to boost the minimum wage for tourism-associated workers to $25 an hour will move forward. The meeting drew hundreds of supporters and critics including the Padres and Sea World. If enacted, thousands of local workers would see their hourly pay rise as much as 45% from the current minimum of $17.25 an hour. While it sounds outrageous to some and will most definitely increase the cost of services, San Diego is an expensive place for workers to live. Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera notes that a single person has to earn more than $30 an hour just to cover basic living expenses in the city. A final ordinance will be drafted for the full city council to consider later this year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/25/proposal-to-mandate-25-minimum-wage-for-tourism-workers-moves-forward/
A new international route out of San Diego International Airport began yesterday. Copa Airlines’ first flight to Panama City took off around 9p. It’s the culmination of a 12-year effort by San Diego officials to create a convenient air connection with Latin America. Copa will have flights out of San Diego every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The airline offers up to a seven-day stopover in Panama City at no extra cost before continuing on to other South American and Caribbean destinations served by Copa. A spokesman for the airline says early bookings look promising. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/25/san-diegos-newest-overseas-nonstop-flight-to-panama-starts-today/

According to a 234-page financial disclosure released two weeks ago, billionaire President Donald Trump had $630m of reported income last year including $57m from cryptocurrency sales, and more than $8m for licensing his name to products including watches and bibles. About three fourths of income reported is from Trump hotels and golf courses, like Mar-a-Lago in Florida. He has total assets of $1.6b. Most troubling to ethics experts is the President’s involvement in cryptocurrency at a time when Congress is working on legislation to regulate the relatively new industry. The White House points out that the President’s assets are in a revocable trust and that he follows all ethics laws. This latest financial report does not include ventures entered into since Trump took office in January. That includes the new Trump Mobile phone company announced last week – a business which is also federally-regulated. https://www.npr.org/2025/06/26/nx-s1-5446114/trump-wealth-business-crypto-brand
President Trump this month launched a website for a new immigration option for the wealthy. The Trump Card website has received 70k applications for the solid gold card that allows the wealthy to buy their way into the U.S for a cool $5m each. He noted that selling 200k of them would net $1 trillion for the Treasury and help pay down the federal debt. Similar “golden visas” have been a thing worldwide for a number of years. A record 142k millionaires are expected to move to another country this year – some because of political turmoil. The U.K. is expected to lose about 16,500 because of changes in its tax rates. United Arab Emirates is expected to gain the most millionaires – about 9,800. The U.S. is expected to gain about 7,500. Experts say the Trump Card faces basic legal and tax obstacles and is only likely to attract a tiny fraction of the 37m potential buyers the President says will be interested. There are currently a total of 58m millionaires in the world – most of whom have less than $5m. The United States already has 22m of them. So, to gain 37m more is mathematically impossible. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/26/trump-card-overseas-wealthy.html
