A proposal to redevelop the Oceanside Transit Center with 547 apartments, a six-story, 170-room hotel, offices, retail shops and other amenities was endorsed this week by the city’s Planning Commission on a 4-1 vote with Commissioner Grace Redgate opposed. The plan calls for five separate buildings including a stand-alone parking garage, with Irving Gill-style architecture to match the Oceanside City Hall and other downtown civic structures. Public spaces would include art displays, retail shops and a multi-story office building to replace the North County Transit District headquarters on Mission Avenue. Commissioner Redgate wanted to see more recreation space for residents. The plan will go to the city council for consideration sometime later this year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/27/plan-advances-for-homes-hotel-offices-and-retail-at-oceanside-transit-center/
A state appeals court panel yesterday revived a lawsuit brought against San Diego County by the family of a man who died in San Marcos shortly after sheriff’s deputies restrained him. 34-year-old Kristopher Birtcher was shot with a stun gun and subdued by responding deputies outside the San Marcos Hobby Lobby store in October of 2017. Deputies and a psychiatric emergency response team had responded to reports of a disoriented man who was possibly on drugs near the front entrance of the store. The ruling from a three-justice panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal states the deputies handcuffed Birtcher, placed him on the ground on his stomach and “applied bodyweight pressure to his back while he was lying face down on the pavement. While restrained in this prone position, Birtcher gasped, ‘Can’t breathe,’ and called out for help.” Believing that Birtcher might be suffering a drug overdose, naloxone was administered. He died a short time later. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/27/appeals-court-revives-lawsuit-in-mans-restraint-death-outside-san-marcos-hobby-lobby/
At Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Temecula Valley Unified School District board voted 4-1 to pass a revised parent notification policy similar to one passed in the Chino Valley Unified district. The policy requires the district to send an automated email to parents within three days after a student makes a change in their record, which includes a change to their preferred name or pronouns. The email would be sent automatically through Infinite Campus, an online portal for parents and students to access records and other district information, when the change in record occurs. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/06/26/temecula-school-board-approves-revised-parent-notification-policy/

The U.S. economy sputtered in May with consumer spending declining for the first time since January. Commerce Department data released today shows spending down 0.1% last month after rising 2 tenths of a percent in April. New vehicle sales fell by nearly 50% because consumers rushed to beat tariff-based price increases and bought up existing inventory in March and April. Today’s numbers showed a pull-back in restaurant and hotel spending as well. Consumer spending is responsible for more than two thirds of all U.S. economic activity. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/27/economy/us-pce-consumer-spending-inflation-may#:~:text=The%20US%20economic%20engine%20sputtered,after%20rising%200.2%25%20in%20April.
According to a post by President Trump on Truth Social today, trade talks with Canada have ceased and he will soon announce a new tariff rate on goods and services from our neighbor to the north. Talks with Canada have been going on for several months, during which Canada announced a digital service tax that Trump called “a direct and blatant attack on our Country.” He cited it as the reason for ending talks with Canada. Canada’s DST is set to take effect Monday and will be retroactive to 2022. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/27/business/trump-breaks-off-canada-trade-talks
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said today he thinks all trade negotiations could be “wrapped up” by Labor Day. Deadlines had previously been set for July 9. Bessent says the U.S. has 18 “important trading partners” and that signed deals with ten or 12 of them by September would constitute success. So far, the Trump administration has only announced one trade deal with the United Kingdom and a truce in its trade war with China. China announced earlier today that it would approve the export of rare earth minerals to the U.S., allowing critical tech manufacturing to increase in this country. Bessent characterized trade negotiations with the U.K. and China as “behind us for now.” https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/27/business/trade-deals-bessent-deadline

Last weekend, Pixar animation studio had its worst opening weekend ever with the feature, “Elio”, the story of a young boy who is mistaken as Earth’s ambassador to the universe. It sold just $21m worth of tickets in its debut weekend. Compare that with “Inside Out 2” which opened last year with $145m in ticket sales. That was a sequel. And sequels have been driving business in Hollywood for a number of years now in both animated and live-action films. Following the pandemic, studios have worked to deliver films that audiences are already familiar with, including sequels and stories based on well-known books or comics. Elio, however was an original film script. It may still find “legs” if it has a long theater run and later, in paid streaming. Animation originator, Disney was at a low point when acquired Pixar in 2006, which boosted the animation segment of movie-making with films like “Frozen”, “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Coco.” But the pandemic made audiences want familiar stories and competition for that audience has become fierce. Of the Top 20 films last year, none of them were new intellectual properties. It seems to be getting increasingly more difficult for new stories and characters to break through with audiences. Elio, for example opened very shortly after live-action remakes of Disney’s “Lilo and Stitch” and Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon,” both of which have done much better at the box office. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/26/pixars-elio-is-emblematic-of-a-bigger-headwind-for-hollywood.html
