The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A major accident on southbound I-5 near Las Pulgas on Camp Pendleton closed the entire freeway for much of the morning commute yesterday.  It happened around 3a when one vehicle ran into a stalled vehicle causing a massive fire.  Several other vehicles became involved.  Three people died.  The freeway remained completely closed until 10a with southbound traffic detoured off at Las Pulgas and redirected back north, causing yesterday’s huge backup on southbound I-15 from Lake Elsinore past Temecula – the only other way to San Diego County.  Two lanes of southbound 5 reopened at 10:21a with #1 and 2 remaining closed for CHP investigation through the afternoon. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/06/27/news/multi-collision-fatal-accident-on-i-5/76422.html

A convicted felon suspected of domestic violence was arrested yesterday at his home on Stewart Canyon Road in Fallbrook after deputies found multiple weapons and ammunition.  Among the confiscations, two handguns, an assault rifle and two ghost guns. 45-year old William James Wallace was booked into Vista jail on guns, domestic violence and parole violation charges. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/man-arrested-north-county-gun-bust

Temecula deputies are investigating a reported death in the area of Paloma Del Sol Park as a suicide.  The Sheriff’s department reports deputies were dispatched to the park just after 8a yesterday.  The identity of the victim is being withheld.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/death-near-temeculas-paloma-del-sol-park-was-apparent-suicide-rso

A 25-year old Temecula man reported missing since June 18 has been found dead.  Dillan Keith Howard’s body was found Tuesday in the open desert near Blythe.  No word on any foul play being involved.  The case is under investigation.  There have been no arrests. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-man-who-went-missing-desert-found-dead

45-year old Rigoberto R. Reyes pled guilty Wednesday to a road rage stabbing May 21, 2022 in Old Town Temecula.  The unidentified victim did recover.  Sentencing for Reyes will be July 29 at Southwest Justice Center in French Valley. https://patch.com/california/temecula/guilty-pleas-old-town-temecula-stabbing

After several weeks of research, the Riverside County Registrar of Voters has confirmed that current law does not block a candidate from running in a special election to fill their own vacancy.  That means that ousted Temecula school district board president Joseph Komrowsky is clear to fulfill his promise to once again run for seat on the board in November.  Komrowsky represented Trustee Area 4 – roughly the area between Temecula Parkway and Rancho California Road as far east of Wine Country.  The remaining board members have not appointed a successor.  The seat will be filled by a special election, concurrent with the general election in November.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/06/28/temeculas-joseph-komrosky-can-run-for-old-school-board-seat-months-after-his-recall/

The Pala tribe’s annual fireworks show is tomorrow at 9p.  Fireworks will launch from the Juan Diego Center.  Best viewing from Henderson Road and the parking lot of Pala Admin.  Rez Radio will once again provide the music soundtrack for the fireworks.  If you’re watching in Pala, be sure to listen on the radio at 91.3 FM, not to the live stream, which is delayed compared with the radio.

The San Diego County Fair Powwow is Sunday from 11:30a to 8p.  There’ll be drumming, singing, dancing, food, arts & crafts in this first-ever event at the Fair. www.SDFair.com https://www.eastcountymagazine.org/taxonomy/term/16

Cloudy mornings will continue for at least another week.  After a mid-80s high today we can expect high temperatures in the 90s through the 4th of July.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres and Dodgers had yesterday off following San Diego’s sweep of the Nationals at Petco Park and LA’s sweep of the White Sox in Chicago.  The Angels shut out Detroit 5-0.  Davis Daniel won his first MLB start on the mound, allowing four hits and striking out 8.  It was the Angels’ fourth win in a row.  That series continues today in Anaheim.  The Dodgers open a series at San Francisco and the Padres are at Boston.

The top vote getters in All-Star balloting have been named to the starting lineups for the July 16 game at Arlington, Texas.  In the American League, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge and the National League’s first baseman for Philadelphia, Bryce Harper.  A few hours after the announcement, Harper left the field in the Phillies’ 7-4 loss to Miami with an apparent hamstring injury.  He’ll be examined today.  Harper received almost 3.278m All-Star votes.  Judge led the majors with 3.425m.  He’ll be starting his 6th of seven All-Star Games.  Harper will be in his eighth All-Star game including seven starts.  The remaining starting lineups will be announced Sunday. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40448394/aaron-judge-bryce-harper-top-fan-vote-start-all-star-game

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm beat Rancho Cucamonga 9-8 last night at Storm Stadium.  So far, the series is a sweep for the Storm. Game 4 of 6 is tonight. https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-06

In basketball – The biggest news of this year’s college draft came with the 55th pick when the Lakers selected Bronny James, son of LeBron James.  He becomes the first player ever drafted into the NBA while his father is an active player.  Now they’ll be on the same team – a dream LeBron first floated a few years ago.  Whether they’ll actually get a chance to play together remains to be seen.  LeBron will match Vince Carter for the longest NBA playing career this upcoming season – his 22nd.  https://www.nba.com/news/2024-nba-draft-lakers-select-bronny-james

In Soccer – Tomorrow, LAFC hosts the Colorado Rapids and the Galaxy play the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford.

In the NFL – An LA jury yesterday deliberated two hours before deciding the NFL should pay more than $4.7b for anti-trust violations related to its “Sunday Ticket” package.  With it, fans can watch games outside of their home markets, but only if they buy access to a bundle of games.  Because this was an anti-trust case, the verdict could be tripled if upheld.  Even though pro football is America’s richest, most-popular and profitable sport, $14.1b in damages would hurt – wiping out almost an entire year of revenue.  The NFL made $18b last year. Rights fees are a major part of that.  This verdict could profoundly affect those deals in all professional sports.  The NFL has already said they’ll appeal. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/27/media/nfl-verdict-sunday-ticket-antitrust-trial/index.html

In Rugby – the San Diego Legion’s next game is tomorrow evening hosting Seattle at Snapdragon Stadium.

In golf – At the Rocket Mortgage Classis in Detroit, with half the field still on the course for round 2, Akshay Bhatia led going into the clubhouse at 13 under par – two strokes ahead of Troy Merritt and Taylor Montgomery.

In racing – NASCAR Sunday at Nashville.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up slightly.  The S&P 500 was up a tenth.  The Dow and NASDAQ each gained less than a tenth of a percent. For the first time since November, prices in the US didn’t rise in May.  The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, which the Federal Reserve watches closely as it tries to limit inflation to 2%, remained unchanged from April and slowed to 2.6% for the 12 months ended in May.  Today’s Commerce Department report credited 2.1% lower gasoline prices and 0.4% lower general goods prices.  Food prices still increased a tenth of a percent in the latest report.  Today’s report was about what economists had expected. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/28/economy/us-pce-inflation-fed-consumer-spending-may/index.html

Walgreens announced yesterday that it plans to close a “significant” number of its approximately 8,600 stores in the US.  About one fourth of them aren’t profitable.  CEO Tim Wentworth told the Wall Street Journal the company will look at closing stores that are too close together or struggling with theft.  Walgreens’ underlying problems include competition and failed growth strategies.  Wentworth went on to say, “We are at a point where the current pharmacy model is not sustainable.”  CVS and Rite Aid have also been closing stores over the past several years.  Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy last year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/28/business/walgreens-cvs-closing/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, Kevin Costner’s production of “Horizon: An American Saga” covers 15 years of pre and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.  Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson star in “Daddio” about an epic journey that begins when Johnson’s character climbs into Penn’s cab at JFK Airport.  And “A Quiet Place: Day One” is a horror thriller starring Lupita Nyong’o.  https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/june/2024?view=list

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin filed suit this week against Chinese shopping app Temu – Amazon’s biggest rival, calling it “dangerous malware” that spies on your texts.  Griffin cited research and media reports about Temu’s design which requires extensive unrestricted access to a user’s phone operating system.  Further, the suit claims that access goes virtually undetected.  The risks are compounded by the possibility that Temu’s owner, PDD Holdings is legally obligated to share its data with the Chinese government.  The company, which was founded by a former Google employee in 2015 expressed surprise over the lawsuit and promised to defend vigorously. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/06/shopping-app-temu-is-dangerous-malware-spying-on-your-texts-lawsuit-claims/

  • In 1968, Pink Floyd’s second album, “A Saucerful of Secrets” was released.  It was the last Floyd album on which Syd Barrett would appear and the only one on which all five band members contributed.  The album cover was designed by the band’s artistic and video contributors Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell through their new company, Hipgnosis.
  • On the same day, at EMI studios, The Beatles recorded John Lennon’s lullaby for his 5-year old son, Julian.  Ringo Starr sang the vocal on “Goodnight”, which was released on the White Album.

  • On the same day, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Nice, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Ten Years After, Taste, The Liverpool Scene and Chicken Shack all appeared at day two of The Bath Festival of Blues in England.  It was a surprise sellout, causing organizers to repeat it for several years.  The only mishap was when the stage collapsed under the weight of The Nice’s army of bagpipers.
  • In 1975, The Eagles began the first of five weeks at #1 on the album chart with their fourth album, “One of These Nights”, which contained three Top Ten singles, “Lyin’ Eyes”, “Take It To The Limit” and the title track.

  • In 1997, 25 years after its initial release, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” was on the U.S. album chart for its 1,056th It was said that if you listened to it while watching the 1939 movie, “The Wizard of Oz” and started the album at exactly the third roar of the MGM lion, very interesting connections between the two would be seen.
  • In 2007, The Spice Girls announced they would reunite for a world tour with the original lineup together for the first time in 9 years.
  • On the same day, two workers were killed and two others injured while dismantling the stage after a Rolling Stones concert in Madrid, Spain.
