Groundbreaking was held last week for the new Pala Super Mart & Fuel Station. It’ll be west of the existing Mini Mart on a much larger parcel of land along Highway 76 in front of Pala RV Resort. The new Super Mart will include a grocery market, full service deli, and specialty coffee bar to serve travelers and locals. The building will be three times the size of the Mini Mart with indoor and outdoor eating areas, EV charging stations, a state-of-the-art car and RV wash and 24/7 fueling from 20 pumps, including 8 for RVs and other oversize vehicles. Pala Tribal Chairman Robert Smith called it “a vital step in fulfilling our vision for long-term Tribal economic sustainability.” There is additional building space for a nationally-branded quick service restaurant to be named later. Pala Super Mart & Fuel Station is expected to open next year. The City of Carlsbad pulled the construction contract for several downtown traffic circles from its consent calendar agenda last week, asking instead for other alternatives to be presented at its July 29 meeting. The decision may cause the city to forfeit a $5m federal grant to help with realigning, adding lighting and undergrounding utilities at five Barrio neighborhood intersections were residents are concerned about speeding and pedestrian safety. Loss of parking was the council’s prime concern. A report the city council said a total of 46 downtown parking spaces would be lost to the circles. That was later revised down to 38 spaces. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/06/30/carlsbad-does-another-reverse-on-traffic-circles-jeopardizing-4-million/

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost two out of three games in Cincinnati, including yesterday’s 3-2 decision on a bases-loaded single scoring two runs for the Reds in the bottom of the 9th. The Giants lost two out of three to the White Sox in Chicago. The Dodgers took two out of three from the Royals in Kansas City, extending their lead over both the Padres and Giants to 7 and 7 ½ games respectively. It also puts them in a tie with Detroit for the best record in the league at this point in the season. The Nationals took two out of three from the Angels in Anaheim including an 11-inning, 7-4 win yesterday. In that game, Nationals slugger James Wood became the first Major Leaguer since Barry Bonds to draw four intentional walks in a game. It happened to Bonds four times in 2004. The Dodgers and Angels have today off. The Padres open a series in Philadelphia and the Giants are in Phoenix to play the Diamondbacks. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45611480/nationals-james-wood-draws-4-intentional-walks-vs-angels

The WNBA is expanding. The league announced today that there will be new expansion teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. That will grow the league to 18 teams over the next five years. More than a dozen cities had submitted bids to host expansion teams. Each of the three new teams will pay $250m in franchise fees. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/30/new-wnba-teams-cleveland-detroit-philadelphia.html

It was 91 today at All England Club, beating the previous high of 85 on opening day in 2001. Some sweat-soaked athletes resorted to ice-filled towels around their necks as they sat on the sidelines. Others noted it wasn’t that different from the Australian Open in Melbourne in January, or the New York Open in August and September. It’s frequently 90 or more at those events. But the average daytime June temperature in London is normally in the low-70s. https://apnews.com/article/wimbledon-2025-heat-be379d08ec6fec694f901da2fa38a582

President Trump told Fox News yesterday that he’s found a group of investors willing to buy TikTok. Citing security concerns about the social media app’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, Congress set a January deadline for it to either be sold or quit operating in the U.S. That deadline has been delayed three times by Trump, who now says a deal will close by September 17. The Chinese government still needs to approve the sale. In the past they’ve said they’d block it. Trump is confident they’ll change their stance. www.morningbrew.com
The President got a win in his trade war with Canada yesterday. That country announced last night that it would scrap the new tax on American technology companies that caused Trump to suspend trade talks with Canada. www.cnbc.com
Already the nation’s largest home improvement center, Home Depot wants to get larger. Its distribution unit is buying building products distributor GMS for $4.3b to gain more business from contractors and other home professionals. That segment, which includes electricians, roofers, landscapers and other professionals is also a steadier and more lucrative part of the home improvement market. Home Depot shares were down slightly today. GMS shares were up 11% at a 52-week high. The deal should be complete by early next year. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/30/home-depot-srs-distribution-buys-gms.html
Luckin Coffee, the fast-growing chain that’s beating Starbucks at its own game in China today opened its first two store in this country. Both are in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Founded in 2017, Luckin caters to the young and prices its drinks about 30% below Starbucks. Its stores are barebones and require customers to use mobile phones to place orders – something many US chains are increasingly pushing customers to do as well. That strategy also allows Luckin to quickly add new locations. It overtook Starbucks in China in 2019. That same year, it filed for an initial public offering, but had to pull it back a year later after admitting its earnings had been a fabrication. That led to its being de-listed from the Nasdaq stock exchange and its chairman and CEO both being fired. It was also hit with a $180m fine from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Recovering from all of that is what’s taken Luckin this long to expand into the U.S. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/30/food/luckin-coffee-first-usa-location

The sequel, “M3GAN 2.0” debuted in 4th with a low $10.2m. After six week, “Lilo and Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” are both still in the top ten, which in-total slightly exceeded last weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W26/
J.M. Smucker is the latest big food company to announce plans to eliminate artificial dyes from its products. All of its jams and other products will have no synthetic dyes by the end of 2027. And foods sold to K-12 will be synthetic dye-free by the 2026-27 school year. Most of its products are already free of the targeted dyes. Products that still have them include sugar-free jams and ice cream toppings. So do some Hostess products including Twinkies and Snoballs. Smuckers acquired Hostess in 2023. https://www.npr.org/2025/06/28/nx-s1-5449648/j-m-smucker-plans-to-remove-artificial-colors-from-its-jams-and-other-products
One of the big problems with online shopping for clothes is that you don’t know how they’ll fit or look on you until you buy and have them shipped to you. A new Google app called Doppl, allows you to upload a photo of yourself along with photos of clothing you’d like to try on virtually. Then it shows you an image of your doppelganger wreathing the clothes. It even generates a short video of you in them. There are still some bugs in the app. If you upload a mirror selfie, the app tends to make you look much thinner, and any kind of fisheye lens distorts your proportions. It may also generate new AI feet for your body. www.morningbrew.com
Delving even further into future tech, China just hosted the first three-on-three soccer match played by fully autonomous robots. The level of play was more along the lines of Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl. Even though the ‘bots didn’t run and there were no headers or over-the-head kicks, they still fell down a lot. But it’s a start. As they say, baby steps … which is all the robots did, occasionally advancing the ball with one. https://apnews.com/video/beijing-hosts-chinas-first-fully-autonomous-3-on-3-ai-robot-soccer-match-e304c40f16684667a9c35a73ab8e5b31
