LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

As of 7a this morning, the McCain Fire in East County had grown to 1,362 acres and was 50% contained.  Hundreds of people are still under evacuation orders.  No structures lost so far. It’s been burning since Monday afternoon when a car overturned on I-8 near McCain Valley Road, setting roadside brush on fire.  Not too far away, the Humphries Fire began yesterday afternoon near the Tecate Port of Entry.  With a potential to burn 500 acres, its progress was stopped at about 30 acres.  There were no evacuations. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/brush-fire-burns-near-us-mexico-border-in-far-east-san-diego-county/3556505/

Here’s where you can see professional fireworks displays locally.  Tonight, at 9p at El Corazon SoCal Soccer Complex. Tomorrow at 8:45p:  Legoland in Carlsbad.  At 9p: at the Park Hyatt Aviara and Omni La Costa resorts in Carlsbad, at the Del Mar Fair, at Del Mar Beach on Camp Pendleton with access limited to authorized military and their families, at Grape Day Park in Escondido, at the Community Center on Heald Lane in Fallbrook, at Bradley Park in San Marcos, and Brengle Terrace Park in Vista.  In southwest Riverside County, displays will go off at 9p at Diamond Stadium in Lake Elsinore, Wheatfield Park in Menifee, and Ronald Reagan Sports Park in Temecula.  Murrieta had its fireworks show Saturday along with the city’s anniversary celebration.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/20/where-to-go-for-fourth-of-july-fireworks-parades-and-festivities-a-guide-for-san-diego-county/ https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/06/24/where-to-find-july-4th-2024-fireworks-in-the-inland-empire/

The San Diego Legion rugby team is presenting a 4th of July drone sky show off Broadway Pier in San Diego Bay at 8:30p tomorrow, just ahead of the Big Bay Boom fireworks show.  La Jolla Shores will have a drone show at 9p, best viewed from Kellogg Park. https://www.axios.com/local/san-diego/2024/07/02/fourth-july-best-fireworks-shows-chula-vista-la-jolla

Don’t take your dog to the fireworks display.  There’s just about a zero percent chance they’ll enjoy it and odds are better than 2 to 1 it’ll traumatize Snarfy into running away.  They don’t call 4th of July “lost dog day” for nothing.  Fireworks also give the fire season a boost.  According to the journal PLoS One, more than 11k wildfires between 1980 and 2016 were caused by fireworks – and two thirds of those happened in the two weeks surrounding 4th of July.  More of those fires began on July 4 than any other day of the year.  And hardly any of them were caused by professional displays staged legally.  In California, all fireworks are banned in the four largest cities.  You can’t legally buy or light off any kind of fireworks at any time.  About 300 California communities do allow so-called safe and sane fireworks – typically sparklers, fountains and pinwheels that have fire marshal approval. Anything that explodes, flies into the air or moves uncontrollably is completely banned in the state, except for professional displays. www.NYTimes.com

Being a holiday, some things will be open and some will be closed tomorrow.  The San Diego County Fair is open, as we mentioned with fireworks at 9p.  Most retail stores will be open. Some might have reduced hours.  Trader Joe’s will close early at 5p.  Sam’s Club will be open, but Costco will be closed.  Some pharmacies may be closed.  It’s a bank holiday, so most bank branches will be closed.  You’ll need to bank online or at ATMs.  The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange get the day off.  Non-essential government offices including the DMV and libraries will be closed.  The Post Office is closed with no delivery of regular mail.  UPS and FedEx will not be picking up or delivering for regular services.  Most restaurants and fast food places will be open, though some may have reduced hours.  All Pala tribal offices and businesses will be closed and Pala Today will not air or publish.  https://www.fastcompany.com/91151165/july-4th-2024-opened-closed-stocks-usps-banks-walmart-pharmacies-list

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres got shut out by the Rangers in Arlington 7-0.  It was their first loss to Texas in the past dozen matchups between the two teams.  The Dodgers edged the visiting Diamondbacks 6-5 thanks to a pair of RBI hits in the bottom of the 9th.  The Diamondbacks had taken the lead for the first time in the game in the top half of the inning on a solo homer by Joc Pederson.  The A’s beat the Angels in Oakland 7-5.  All three series continue today.

21-year old Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill was named National League rookie of the month for June this morning.  It’s the first time that honor has gone to a Padre since Jake Cronenworth won in July and August of 2020.  In his 28 games last month, Merrill hit nine home runs, seven doubles, 20 RBIs, 17 runs and two steals.  His 33 hits were the most for a Padre age 21 or younger since Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 36 in August of 2020.  He homered in three straight games in the middle of the month including his first multi-homer game with one of them providing the walk-off win on June 12. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/07/03/padres-jackson-merrill-named-junes-nl-rookie-of-the-month/

Even though he’s in second place for home runs in the majors this season, Shohei Ohtani won’t be in this year’s Home Run Derby at the All-Star Break.  That’s because in the middle of pitching rehab for an injured elbow ligament.  Right now, he’s only hitting … and hitting well.  He had a 433 foot homer to right center in last night’s win over Arizona. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40486612/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-participate-2024-mlb-home-run-derby

In basketball – The NBA’s all-time leading scorer, who turns 40 this December, LeBron James has singed a 2-year, $104m deal to stay with the Lakers.  There’s a no trade clause and the second year will be a player option for what could be an unprecedented 23rd NBA season.

Four-time All-Star and champion out of UConn, Kemba Walker announced his retirement from the NBA on social media yesterday.  The 34-year old was drafted in 2011 by the then-Charlotte Bobcats.  He is the all-time points leader for Charlotte.  He played sparingly in the French league last season.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40483309/uconn-great-four-nba-all-star-kemba-walker-retires

Team USA training camp in preparation for the Paris Olympics begins this weekend in Las Vegas.

Cal State San Marcos has signed a new women’s basketball head coach.  Jana Pearson was an assistant at Westmont College as they transitioned from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.  She replaces Rene Jimenez, who is taking the head coaching job at UC Santa Barbara after leading the San Marcos Cougars into this year’s NCAA Division II Final 4. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/06/21/cal-state-san-marcos-names-new-womens-basketball-coach/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed again.  The Dow fell a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up four tenths.  The Nasdaq was up 8 tenths.  Gold shot up almost $38 on the Comex to $2,371.20 an ounce – the highest it’s been in a month.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained 17 cents to $82.98 a barrel.

Though a slight increase was predicted for the July 4th holiday, the average price of a gallon of regular in San Diego County today is down a penny to $4.79.  It had held steady for the past week and is down 18 cents from one month ago.  The Riverside County, today’s average is $4.66.  Today’s nationwide average is $3.51 – two cents more than a week ago and right back where it was a month ago.  The lowest local price is $4.21 at Son’s on 5th at Centre City Parkway in Escondido.  In southwest Riverside County it’s $4.39 at Murrieta Sam’s Club and the three area Costcos.  There are several stations in Hemet and Cabazon where it’s less than $4 a gallon.  Bottom line – 4th of July gas prices are the lowest they’ve been in three years. https://www.sandiegogasprices.com/

Even though a record number of people will fly commercial airlines this year, those airlines aren’t reaping the rewards.  That’s because of all the problems running an airline behind the scenes including higher costs for fuel, wages and interest rates.  Then there’s Boeing, whose problems mean airlines don’t have as many planes as they expected so they’d be able to expand routes to accommodate demand.  Boeing’s only major competitor, Airbus is also having less-publicized problems with some of its jet engines.  Lack of new planes is forcing the furlough of some pilots for whom there is plenty of work, just a lack of planes to accomplish it.  Fortunately for flyers, airlines are driven in the short term by supply and demand.  Upstart airlines are keeping competition fierce.  Right now, fares are down because there are 6% more seats available compared with one year ago.  But long-term, flying may become a less-pleasant thing with fewer choices and restricted routes as some of those upstarts are unable to continue operating at a loss and the major airlines tighten their belts.  Southwest announced last month that it will stop serving four airports to cut costs.  Industry analysts expect airline profits to drop by about one third, or $2b in the upcoming quarterly report.  In this year’s first quarter, profit was down $800m. https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/03/business/airline-woes-despite-record-passenger-traffic/index.html

About two weeks into a cyber incident that caused a software blackout, CDK Global says nearly all of the 15,000 automotive dealers that use its services are back online with core services.  Those dealerships use CDK for everything from scheduling appointments, to sales, to record-keeping and payroll. https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/02/business/cdk-global-dealers-online/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Oscar-winning screenplay writer Robert Towne has died at the age of 89.  Though writers are often dismissed as second-class citizens in Hollywood, Towne at one time was as big a star as the actors and directors he worked with.  His credits include “Shampoo”, “The Last Detail” and his crowning achievement, “Chinatown”.   Other credits included the first two Mission Impossible movies.  He’d honed his craft working in television including “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and “The Lloyd Bridges Show” and on low-budget “B” movies for producer Roger Corman.  His breakthrough to major movies came when he was hired by Warren Beatty for revisions to the script for “Bonnie and Clyde”.  In 1997, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Writers Guild of America. https://www.npr.org/2024/07/02/nx-s1-5026994/robert-towne-dead-chinatown-screenwriter-obituary

AI company, ElevenLabs is bringing digitally produced celebrity voice-overs of deceased actors to its newly launched Reader app.  The app takes various forms of printed material and turns it into voice-overs.  The company has made deals with the estates of the actors whose voices are being used including Judy Garland, James Dean and Burt Reynolds. ElevenLabs made headlines earlier this year when its AI was reportedly used to create a fake robocall from President Biden urging people not to vote in the New Hampshire presidential primary.  One of the controversies over using such celebrity voices is copyright.  A person can’t copyright their own voice, but recordings of them can be copyrighted.  AI celebrity voices get their training from old recordings that are covered by copyright. https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/03/tech/elevenlabs-ai-celebrity-voices/index.html
