In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the Phillies in Philadelphia 6-4. Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta got his 9th win of the season, giving up just one run in six innings. Padres offense got everything they needed for the win in the second inning beginning with a bases-loaded walk to Fernando Tatis Jr. Philadelphia starter Mick Abel walked in the second Padres run on the next batter, Jackson Merrill. The final Padres run was another bases-loaded walk to Luis Arraez in the 4th. The Dodgers rallied past the White Sox with three runs in the bottom of the 9th for a 5-4 win. Though closer Will Klein got the win – his first this season, starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw stayed in for six innings, giving up all four Chicago runs, but chalking up his 3,000th career strikeout in the top of the 6th. The Giants edged the Diamondbacks in Phoenix 6-5 in ten innings. Thanks to the Dodgers’ three-game win streak, they lead the NL West by 8 ½ games over the Padres and 9 over the Giants. Arizona is in fourth place 11 ½ back. The Angels lost in Atlanta 8-3. They finish that series tonight along with the Dodgers’ final game in Chicago and the Giants in Arizona. The Padres are off today. They open a weekend series tomorrow hosting Texas. The Dodgers will host Houston. The Giants are in Sacramento to play the A’s. And the Angels open a series in Toronto.
Freedie Freeman who hit last night’s walk-off RBI single and catcher Will Smith will join Shohei Ohtani on this year’s National League All-Star team, marking the first time in 45 years the Dodgers have had three players in the starting lineup. www.apnews.com
In the NFL – The Chargers announced earlier this week that former safety Rodney Harrison will be the 36th player inducted into the team’s hall of fame. Ceremonies will be during halftime at the Chargers’ Week 8 game against Minnesota on October 23. He’d been selected by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round of the 1994 draft. He spent nine of his 15 NFL seasons with the Chargers including their only Super Bowl appearance. His hard play at safety earned him the nickname, “The Hitman”. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45619309/chargers-adding-ex-safety-rodney-harrison-team-hall-fame
In the NBA – Detroit’s Malik Beasley became just the fifth player ever to hit 300 three-pointers in a season this year. But talks of a contract extension with the Pistons for the free agent are on hold as Beasley faces a federal investigation about gambling. He also faces multiple lawsuits related to unpaid debts. https://sports.yahoo.com/article/nba-star-malik-beasley-sued-223030753.html
Free agent Deandre Ayton will sign a two-year deal with the Lakers, netting him $34m for next season. The 26-year old had finalized a buyout from his current team, the Trail Blazers on Sunday. He’s one of just four players to average at least 10 points and 10 rebounds per game in each of the past seven seasons. He’ll become LA’s starting center and play alongside fellow 2018 top-pick Luka Doncic. Ayton and Doncic were chosen #1 and #3 respectively in the 2018 draft. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45649142/lakers-reach-agreement-center-deandre-ayton
In the NHL – The San Jose Sharks picked up veteran defenseman Dmitry Orlov for two years at $13m. A Stanley Cup champion with Washington, he’s been with Carolina for the past two seasons. He’s played 867 games in his NHL career including 327 points – 251 of them from assists. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45659212/sharks-sign-defenseman-dmitry-orlov-2-year-13m-contract

The 38-year old used the milestone to poke fun at his much younger rivals including Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals. https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/45658435/djokovic-reaches-3rd-round-wimbledon-record-19th
In high school sports – the Supreme Court yesterday agreed to hear a new case regarding which school sports teams transgender students can join. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained ¾ of a percent. The S&P 500 added eight tenths. And the Nasdaq was up a full percent. Comex gold fell $20.60 to $3,339.10 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 51 cents to $66.94 a barrel.
Additional taxes on gasoline and diesel in California went into effect this week. You may or may not be seeing the difference at the pump, since underlying prices have been falling a little lately and the increase was only a penny or two. Of more concern is how much and when prices will increase due to new low-carbon fuel standards. The average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $4.58. In Riverside County, it’s $4.37. Today’s nationwide average is $3.13. Today’s lowest local price is $3.85 at Son’s on 5th at Centre City Parkway in Escondido. In southwest Riverside County, it’s $4.02 at Murrieta Sam’s Club. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap
Hopes for an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve later this month may have been dashed by stronger-than-expected jobs data. Labor Department statistics show 147k new jobs in June. That’s well above the forecast for 110k and slightly higher than the revised May number of 144k. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%. Economists had expected an increase to 4.3%. The strong jobs report caused a spike in Treasury yields. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/02/stock-market-today-live-updates.html
Congress just before noon today passed President Trump’s “big beautiful bill”. Corporate America will certainly be better off. Tax breaks from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will become permanent including equipment write-offs in the year of purchase. Manufacturers will be happy because the same deduction is available for new factories. Many small businesses will benefit. High-income individuals will get to keep more of their income. But millionaires who lose their jobs won’t be able to collect unemployment. Workers who receive tips and overtime will get an extra tax break through 2028. Low income Americans will be worse off because of fewer federal safety net programs and higher qualification levels for those programs. Hospitals will be worse off due to federal funding cuts. Incentives for wind and solar energy will go away. The EV tax credit will disappear by September. It was supposed to continue through 2032. And the federal deficit will go up by trillions of dollars. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/03/business/trump-big-beautiful-bill-business-economy

His younger sister is actress Virginia Madsen. Michael was 67. https://variety.com/2025/film/news/virginia-madsen-mourns-michael-madsen-death-1236447027/
According to a Congressional analysis, the cost of your 4th of July barbecue has gone up since the Trump-imposed tariffs. Imported brands went up a lot more. Folding chairs, grilling tools and other likely imported items are up. A Coleman folding camping chair on Amazon went up 47.7%. ORDERS
- Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments. Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
- Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places. It’s now only a recommendation. Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis. They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices. Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended. Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
- County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began. They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
- Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours. But no test is necessary.
