LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Camp Pendleton went on lockdown this morning following a suspicious package being left near the Main Gate around 3a.  It had been left by a man who was upset at having been denied entry to the base.  CHP posted at 5:42a that all gates to the base were closed, causing traffic problems on area surface streets and the adjacent 5 freeway.  San Diego Sheriffs’ Office took over the investigation.  The lockdown was lifted shortly after 8a. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/suspicious-package-discovery-leads-to-camp-pendleton-main-gate-closure-073025

Valley Center Grade was closed to traffic for about an hour yesterday afternoon around 4p due to a half-acre brush fire.  A witness says he saw a man who hangs out in the area start the fire. https://www.facebook.com/TimesAdvocate

Carlsbad City Council voted unanimously yesterday to reduce the number of proposed traffic circles in its Barrio neighborhood from five to one at the intersection of Harding and Pine, which is considered a neighborhood gateway.  Keeping one circle preserves a $4m federal grant.  Eight intersections were originally proposed for traffic circles in the city’s Village and Barrio master plan to slow speeders and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.  Three were dropped as being inappropriate and a five-circle design was adopted in 2020.  The council reconsidered after public outcry last month, just as the construction contract was about to be awarded.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/29/carlsbad-cuts-plan-for-barrio-from-five-traffic-circles-to-one/

Monday’s fatality in the room that caught fire at the Motel 6 near College Boulevard and the 78 freeway in Oceanside has been determined to have been a 76-year old man who overdosed while smoking, setting his bed on fire.  His identity has not been released. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/29/fatal-motel-fire-caused-by-smoker-who-likely-overdosed-in-bed-police-say/

Oceanside PD will be conducting a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city this Friday from 6p to 2a Saturday.  Locations are chosen based on data showing incidents of impaired driving crashes. https://www.newsbreak.com/times-of-san-diego-555715/4143511792305-oceanside-police-to-conduct-weekend-dui-checkpoint

Lake Wohlford has just been stocked with catfish, with three additional plants scheduled between now and mid-August.  Water level is low with private watercraft currently banned from the lake.  Permits and boat rentals are available at the Ranger Station, where they only accept credit and debit cards – no cash transactions.  Fishing licenses have to be obtained elsewhere prior to visiting the lake. https://www.times-advocate.com/articles/catfish-planting-for-lake-coming/

A couple hundred SDG&E customers lost power in San Marcos, near the border with Vista at 9a this morning.  Power is expected to be restored by 3p today. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

High waves were reported along a large portion of the Northern California coast including San Francisco during the Tsunami watch issued following yesterday’s 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula, northeast of Japan.  Southern California was under a lesser tsunami advisory, which was cancelled this morning.  An advisory remains in effect for Northern California.  There have been hundreds of aftershocks – a few as large as 6.9.  USGS officials say the Russian quake potentially ties as being the sixth strongest quake ever recorded.  https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=us6000qwiq&extent=49.30722,-202.92307&extent=53.33415,-197.66611

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres routed the visiting Mets 7-1 yesterday.  Manny Machado hit a three-run homer as part of a five-run 7th inning.  San Diego’s win streak is now at four.  The Dodgers edged the Reds 5-4 in Cincinnati thanks to an RBI double in the 9th by Will Smith.  Shohei Ohtani struck out in his four at-bats.  The Pirates beat the Giants 3-1 in San Francisco, dropping them to five games behind the second place Padres, who remain four games behind the Dodgers.  The last place Pirates are riding a four-game win streak.  The Angels beat the visiting Rangers 8-5.  They’ve now won three in a row.  All the series conclude today.

The MLB trade deadline is tomorrow.

In the NFL – Cincinnati has released veteran running back Zack Moss after one season with the team.  He was on a two-year, $8m contract.  He’d started training camp on the non-football injury list after suffering a season-ending neck injury last year. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45859478/bengals-release-veteran-rb-zack-moss-1-season

Also in Cincinnati, Trey Hendrickson has ended his contract holdout.  He was an active spectator at today’s training camp morning practice, giving tips to younger players.  But he doesn’t plan to participate until he receives his contract extension. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45861124/bengals-trey-hendrickson-ends-holdout-not-practicing

In the NBA – It was announced today that the league will play at least six regular season games in Europe over the next three seasons.  This season’s will be a two-game series between Memphis and Orlando in Berlin on January 15 and in London on January 18.  There will be NBA games in Manchester, England and Paris the following season, and in Berlin and Paris in the 2027-28 season. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45858302/magic-grizzlies-berlin-london-nba-sets-3-year-europe-plan

In Major League Soccer – Nine games this Saturday – none of them involving Southern California teams.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow was just barely positive.  The S&P 500 gained two tenths of a percent.  The Nasdaq was up four tenths.  Comex gold gained $29.10 at $3,353.10 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.14 at $70.35 a barrel – the highest oil has been since mid-June.

Today is one of eight times annually that the Federal Reserve announces decisions regarding interest rates.  As expected, the Fed is holding interest rates at about 4 1/3%.  The important thing about today’s announcement is hints about what could convince the Fed to cut interest rates at its next meeting, and which district is dissenting on today’s decision.  https://www.marketwatch.com/story/heres-what-investors-will-look-for-in-fed-messaging-on-interest-rate-policy-b5931b3f?mod=home_lead

President Trump announced today that goods produced in India will carry a 25% tariff beginning Friday, in addition to a “penalty” for what he says are unfair trade policies and for India’s purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia.  The rate is on the high end of what Trump said yesterday he was considering for India. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/30/trump-india-tariff-trade.html

Even though Starbucks once again missed its earnings target and same-store sales declined for the sixth straight quarter, investors are encouraged that things are turning around thanks to recent changes.  One sign is growth of store traffic from non-Starbucks Rewards members.  Starbucks has also been tweaking its menu and trying to create a more welcoming environment in its cafes while speeding up service.  Starbucks stock was up 1% this morning and is up about 2% this year, giving it a market cap of $106b. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/30/starbucks-earnings-brian-niccol-turnaround-taking-hold.html

Ford is expected to announce its second quarter earnings after the end of trading today. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/30/ford-motor-f-earnings-q2-2025.html

Cinemark announced it is adding 20 new ScreenX theaters.  Six of them are expected to be open in time for the premiers of the next “Wicked” and “Avatar” movies later this year.  ScreenX is a premium film format that adds additional displays on the left and right walls of an auditorium to create a 270-degree field of view.  Cinemark currently has six of the super wide display theaters.  The closest ones are in San Jose and Milpitas.  Regal has 12, including one at the Irvine Spectrum. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/30/cinemark-to-add-20-screenx-locations-in-premium-moviegoing-push.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Health scientist and longtime civil servant, Susan Monarez has been confirmed as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  She’s the first CDC director to be confirmed by the Senate under a law passed in 2023.  She inherits an agency in chaos.  Thousands of workers have left in recent months as support for many programs was cut.  The President has proposed additional funding cuts for CDC in the next fiscal year.  Monarez became the nominee after Trump’s first choice, Florida physician Dave Weldon’s name was withdrawn when senators raised concerns over his stance on vaccines. https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2025/07/29/nx-s1-5484124/cdc-director-monarez-confirmed-senate

Los Angeles County leaders are working towards an ordinance preventing officers, including federal agents from wearing masks concealing their identities while on duty, saying it erodes public trust and raises safety concerns.  Officers would also be required to visibly display identification and agency affiliation while out in public.  The proposal is the result of masked immigration agents swarming Southern California, arresting hundreds of people over the past two months.  Supervisor Janice Hahn, who co-authored the motion, said the raids carried out by the Trump administration have created fear, and that residents have a right to know who is detaining or questioning them.  Administration official defend the practice of ICE officers wearing masks for their own safety to avoid death threats and retaliation from having their likeness and personal information published on the internet without their permission.  Local and even state legislation like that proposed by LA County would likely end up in court.  A similar bill has been introduced into Congress by Sen. Alex Padilla of California and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.  The advantage of a federal law is that Congress has the Constitutional power to regulate how federal law enforcement operates. https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-county-supervisors-masked-officers-c4d46f63f148a593c5a2bd666b8afe15?user_email=404e3e1e190f5ed2319fc8d5eee050b4c80fb0c39e672c5bb56b123adccff703&utm_medium=Morning_Wire&utm_source=Sailthru_AP&utm_campaign=Morning%20Wire%20Jul%2030%2C%202025&utm_term=Morning%20Wire%20Subscribers

On this day in music history – July 30,

  • 1955, Johnny Cash first recorded “Folsom Prison Blues”, a song he’d been inspired to write after seeing the movie “Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison” while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany.
  • In 1966, the Beatles began the first of five weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Yesterday … And Today”.  Issued only in the U.S. and Canada, it’s remembered for the controversy surrounding its original album cover – the so-called “butcher cover” featuring the band dressed in white smocks and covered with decapitated chidren’s dolls and pieces of raw meat.
  • On that same day in 1966, The Troggs began the first of two weeks at #1 on the singles chart with their cover of “Wild Thing”.  Due to a dispute, it was released on two competing labels.  Since both were the identical song, Billboard combined their sales, making Wild Thing the only song to simultaneously reach #1 for two different record companies.
  • In 1974, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street band played The Troubadour in LA on a double bill with Roger McGuinn from The Byrds.
  • In 1977, The Bee Gees’ little brother, Andy Gibb began the first of four weeks at #1 with “I Just Wanna Be Your Everything”.
  • In 1986, Variety reported that RCA dropped John Denver from its roster because of his single, “What Are We Making Weapons For?”  The song upset the label’s new owner, General Electric, one of the country’s biggest defense contractors.
  • In 1987, David Bowie kicked off the U.S. leg of his Glass Spider Tour in Philadelphia.  It was claimed to be the largest touring set ever with a giant spider 60 feet high and 64 feet wide.  The set required a total of 43 trucks to transport between venues.
  • In 1991, a police officer was forced to tear up a traffic ticket issued to a limo containing Axl Rose after it made an illegal turn.  Rose threatened to cancel that night’s Guns ‘N’ Roses concert, creating big problems for local law enforcement if the ticket was given to the driver.
  • In 2003, Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records in Memphis died of respiratory failure.  Phillips discovered Elvis Presley and worked with Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ike Turner, B.B. King, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
  • In 2015, country singer Lynn Anderson died at the age of 67.  Best known for the song “Rose Garden”, Anderson had 12 #1, 18 top ten, and more than 50 top 40 hits in her career.
