BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down sharply.  The Dow fell 1.2%.  The S&P 500 was off by 9 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was down a full percent.  Gold gained 70 cents on the Comex, trading at $3,343.60 an ounce.  Oil futures were up 47 cents with West Texas Intermediate Crude trading at $67.47 a barrel.

As reported last week, the Big Beautiful Bill of tax and spending cuts passed, was signed by the President and is now law.  The tax cuts go into effect immediately.  Many of them are extensions of cuts from 2017 that were set to expire.  The new law drastically raises the state and local tax deduction limit and increases the estate tax exemption, all of which benefit upper income people.  According to Penn Wharton school at the University of Pennsylvania, the top 20% of earners will have a yearly net income increase of $13k.  The richest of the rich – the top 0.1% will gain $290k per year.  There will be new deductions for workers who rely on tips or overtime.  The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says that because of the tax cuts, the national debt will increase by over $3 trillion in the next ten years and that about 7.8m people will lose health insurance by then.  Cuts in SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, could affect 40m people.  EV tax credits will be eliminated, but not until the fall.  Auto dealers will be giving a backlog of inventory an extra push before the incentives expire. www.morningbrew.com

Letters posted this weekend on Truth Social say Japan and South Korea will face 25% tariffs on August 1 if new trade agreements aren’t reached by then.  Those rates are close to what President Trump had threatened on his so-called “Liberation Day”.  https://www.marketwatch.com/livecoverage/stock-market-today-dow-s-p-500-and-nasdaq-set-to-slip-as-soft-tariff-deadline-approaches?mod=home_lead

The U.S. dollar just posted its worst first half of a year since 1973 – down 10%.  Investors are concerned it is a sign that America is losing its standing as the world’ financial leader.  It was 1973 when President Nixon separated the dollar from being based on the value of gold.  The current decline is linked to political chaos, tariffs, and the country’s ballooning debt, which will now get a mega-boost from this weekend’s signing of the Big Beautiful Bill.  For two decades, fund managers have preferred U.S. stocks over international stocks.  This year, only 23% favor U.S. stocks. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/07/nx-s1-5455867/trump-dollar-value-debt-currency

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Jurassic World: Rebirth” opened big, selling $91.5m in tickets on 4,300 screens, totally eclipsing last week’s #1, “F1: The Movie” which took in another $26m, making it Apple’s highest-grossing theatrical film so far.  The were followed by “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Elio”, and “28 Years Later” rounding out the top 5.  The 41st anniversary re-release of “This is Spinal Tap” placed 10th with just under $1m on 1k screens.  The total of the top ten for the four-day holiday weekend was below the average so far this year and less than half that of the four-day Memorial Day weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W27/

Over the weekend, more than 2k exhibitors showed off specialty food and drink at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City.  It’s where people go to see the new gastronomic trends.  Recent years have given us new uses for vinegar, oil-based hot sauce, and lavender as a flavor.  This year’s trends include new infusion flavors for olive oil, high-end gourmet mustard, plant-based vegetarian substitutions for dairy products like cheese and butter, chef-branded products, and things that are “swicy” – meaning both sweet and spicy. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/04/2025-food-trends-beef-tallow-mustard-flavored-olive-oil.html
