A Dodge Ram towing a 5th wheel trailer loaded with two cars overturned on the northbound I-15 onramp from Highway 76 last night, blocking all northbound lanes of the freeway for a time. The truck came to rest on its side in the middle lanes just after 9:30p. All northbound traffic had to exit at Highway 76 and continuing across the highway onto the west 76 to north I-15 onramp. The far left lane was the first to reopen about a half hour later. No injuries reported. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/07/03/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spantruck-with-5th-wheel-hauling-cars-flips-over-onto-i-15-from-ramp/79252.html
A vegetation fire in Escondido Sunday afternoon prompted an arson investigation. Police responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of La Terraza Blvd. Minutes later, a fire was reported in the same location. Firefighters upgraded the blaze to two-alarm because of the proximity to the SpringHill Suites hotel and other buildings. SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres’ Manny Machado became the 17th player ever to have 350 home runs and 2k hits by age 33 in yesterday’s game against Arizona at Petco Park. With the Padres trailing by four runs, Machado hit a solo homer in the 9th to achieve the milestone. But it was too little, too late as the Padres lost 6-3. Yu Darvish took the loss. He pitched 3 2/3rds innings, striking out five, giving up three hits and three walks. The Brewers routed the Dodgers 9-1 in Milwaukee. The Giants beat the visiting Phillies 3-1. The Angels edged the visiting Rangers 6-5 thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the bottom-of-the-ninth. All those series continue today.
The Washington Nationals announced yesterday that bench coach Miguel Cairo will be their interim manager. He replaces Dave Martinez, who was fired along with general manager Mike Rizzo on Sunday. Cairo was with nine different teams in his 17-season playing career from 1996 to 2012. He joined the Nationals last season after being infield coordinator for one of the Mets’ minor league affiliates. He’d been acting manager for the White Sox in 2022 when Tony La Russa stepped aside due to a medical condition. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45689792/miguel-cairo-serve-interim-manager-nationals
In the NBA – Dallas Mavericks All-Star Anthony Davis underwent surgery to repair a detached retina suffered last season. He’s expected to be healthy in time for training camp. Davis has only played 11 games since being traded from the Lakers for Luka Doncic. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45695866/sources-mavs-anthony-davis-had-surgery-detached-retina
In the NHL – The league’s board of governors and the full membership of the players’ union have both ratified a new collective bargaining agreement through 2030. Full details have yet to be released, but sources confirmed to ESPN that there will be 84 regular season games – up from 82, along with two fewer preseason games. There will also be shorter max-term contracts. The last CBA was for ten years. Union executive director Marty Walsh noted that there were some players that entered and retired from the league all under the same contract, never having a chance to express their CBA opinions. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45695523/nhl-nhlpa-extend-cba-2030-incudes-84-game-season
In Major League Soccer playoffs – LAFC hosts Colorado tomorrow.

In women’s singles, top seeded Aryna Sabalenka and American, Amanda Anisimova won their quarterfinals. https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/45695404/jannik-sinner-cancels-wimbledon-practice-day-injuring-elbow

President Trump said today he will impose a 50% tariff on imported copper, and suggested that other steep sector-specific duties are on the way. He also said the August 1 deadline for recently-announced broad tariffs against countries who do not negotiate a trade agreement will not be extended. Previous threats of high tariffs have proven to be more of a negotiating tactic with frequent extensions and modifications. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/08/trump-tariffs-copper-trade.html
Following a federal court ruling, the IRS says it’s okay for churches to endorse political candidates to their congregations without risking the loss of their tax-exempt status. This overturns a 70-year old interpretation of the U.S. Tax Code’s Johnson Amendment. President Trump has pushed for that amendment to be repealed. The judge has not yet ruled on the motion for a consent judgement, which would permanently prevent the IRS from enforcing the Johnson Amendment against plaintiff churches. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/08/irs-church-candidates-tax-politics.html
WeightWatchers has emerged from bankruptcy after restructuring its debt and eliminating $1.15b. It will continue under the name WW International with no disruption to members or services. Prescription weight loss drugs caused the original WeightWatchers business model to become out of date. WW International will focus on a holistic approach to weight management, including telehealth services and access to those same medications that sent into bankruptcy when it tried to compete without them. https://www.weightwatchers.com/us/here-to-stay

Jack Dorsey, the guy who created Twitter just unveiled a new messaging platform that doesn’t require internet, central servers, phone numbers, or email addresses. Perfect for those who are paranoid about such things. On Sunday, Dorsey announced the beta launch of Bitchat, which uses Bluetooth Low Energy mesh networking. It’s direct peer-to-peer messaging within physical proximity. Automatic message relay extends the range beyond direct Bluetooth connections. Messages stay encrypted through transfers right up until they reach the end user. The lack of reliance on internet makes it resilient against network outages or censorship. At this point, Bitchat is a lot like one of Dorsey’s other projects – Bluesky, which he created as a weird little experiment that still hasn’t proven itself, and which Dorsey stepped away from over concerns it would repeat some of Twitter’s mistakes. https://gizmodo.com/jack-dorseys-new-private-messenger-app-doesnt-need-an-internet-connection-2000625403
Credit scoring company, FICO recently announced it will soon add data from any buy-now, pay-later loans you may have to your credit score. Of particular interest are online purchases that allow you to split payment into several installments – usually four of them with no interest if paid on time. The Federal Reserve says about 15% of Americans used this type of payment plan in 2023 and 24 and don’t always realize that they are actually loans. Because it’s becoming such a big part of how people manage their finances, FICO will eliminate this blind spot and include the data in credit scores beginning this fall. The effect to consumers will vary. Paying on time should boost your credit. Missing payments will hurt. But because the loan amounts average only about $142, a study by FICO says it won’t change your score more than 10 points up or down – probably less. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/05/nx-s1-5448793/credit-score-fico-buy-now-pay-later-affirm-klarna
