LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Just months after some of them were installed, the city of Vista is removing berms and cones installed as safety measures on city bike lanes – especially those along Melrose Drive and Sycamore Avenue. Cyclists say the changes actually make them feel less safe. Drivers complain the berms are difficult to see, so they end up running over them. They also prevent motorists from pulling to the curb in an emergency or after an accident, prompting everyone to call them an “obstacle course.” Experts in Encinitas testified that there were more crashes after installing berms and bollards along Highway 101 in that city. The initial cost of the bike lane improvements in Vista was $1.5m. It’ll cost another half million to remove them. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/vista-removing-bike-lane-barriers/3864149/
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports there have been 1,288 cases of measles this year – the highest number in 33 years. More than three dozen states have reported outbreaks this year. About 60% of them have been in Texas. About one in eight – a total of 155 people have been hospitalized and three have died. Measles had been declared eliminated in this country 25 years ago. Elimination status had been reached through vaccinations. But the vaccination rate among kindergarten-aged children has been falling for years and is currently at 92.7%. In some communities, it’s much lower. The CDC says a 95% rate threshold is needed to protect against measles outbreaks. Before widespread vaccination for measles, just about everyone got it during childhood. About 400 to 500 children died from it annually. Measles can cause permanent disabilities. Worldwide, it’s still a leading cause of blindness. Experts say it’s one of the most infectious diseases known to humanity, noting that it’s preventable. The latest statistics come the week after several of the nation’s leading medical associations sued Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., for what they characterize as efforts to undermine trust by Americans in vaccines. https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2025/07/09/nx-s1-5461155/measles-outbreak-cdc-vaccination-health

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres topped the visiting Diamondbacks 1-0. That’s the fifth time this season they’ve finished with that score – the most of any team in the league. It shows a lot of good defense. But not enough offense. The last time any team had that many 1-0 games was the 2019 Giants. Milwaukee again beat the Dodgers – this time 3-1. The Giants beat the visiting Phillies. The visiting Rangers routed the Angels 13-1. In the NL West, the Dodgers still have the lead. But they’re now only second in the league – three games behind Detroit. LA leads the Giants by five games and the Padres by six. In the AL West, the Rangers and the Angels have swapped spots. The Rangers are in third place – ten games behind the Astros. The Angels are in fourth by a half game. All the series continue today.
Last night’s win by the Giants included a rare game-ending play – an inside-the-park home run. It’s the first time in nine years any Major League game has ended that way. Giants catcher Patrick Baily launched the shot that bounced off the outfield brick wall, winning the game 4-3. It was the ninth time this season the Giants have rallied to win in their final at-bat – the most of any team so far this year. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45699116/giants-patrick-bailey-hits-park-walk-home-run
Next week’s All-Star Game in Atlanta will be the first to incorporate an automated ball-strike calling system. It’s the same system that was used in this years’ spring training games and could become a permanent part of regular season games as soon as next year. Only a pitcher, catcher or hitter can challenge a call. They have to do it almost immediately after the pitch. Each team gets two challenges and retains them if the challenge is successful. The league says 72% of fans polled during spring training liked the system. 69% want to see it adopted. Only 10% were negative towards ABS. Just about everyone agrees a challenge system is best as opposed to technology calling each pitch. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45701011/mlb-use-abs-challenge-system-all-star-game-atlanta
In the NBA – Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic will delay contract extension talks until next summer. He has three years left on a $276m five-year contract signed in 2022. He has a $62.8m option for the final year in 2027-28. If he signs an extension before October 20, the first year would replace his player option. By waiting until next year, he can add a fourth year to the extension. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45697440/sources-jokic-delay-extension-talks-next-summer
In the NHL – Gavin McKenna, the projected top pick for the 2026 NHL draft yesterday committed to Penn State University. The 17-year old is considered the highest profile recruit in league history. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45696857/gavin-mckenna-likely-top-pick-26-commits-penn-state
In Major League Soccer playoffs – LAFC hosts Colorado tonight. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45696857/gavin-mckenna-likely-top-pick-26-commits-penn-state
In tennis – At Wimbledon, in the quarterfinals, top-seeded Jannik Sinner defeated Ben Shelton in three sets. As of 11:30a, Novak Djokovic was leading Flavio Cobilli in their fourth set.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained seven tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 was up 3 tenths. And the Nasdaq rose 2/3 of a percent. Gold traded up $3.80 on the Comex at $3,320.70 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 40 cents at $68.73 a barrel.
The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday lifted a lower court order blocking the layoff of hundreds of thousands of federal employees under an executive order from President Trump. The order was unsigned and did not indicate how most of the justices voted. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented. Justice Sonia Sotomayor concurred with the court’s decision. Because it was not the actual plans that were part of yesterday’s ruling, they could still end up in front of SCOTUS. Groups arguing for the federal order to be at least paused say it’s because there would be “no way to unscramble the egg” if hundreds of thousands of federal workers are fired and their jobs and agencies eliminated. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/08/nx-s1-5429615/supreme-court-federal-rifs
President Trump’s latest tariff threats include a 50% duty on imported copper with no stated date for implementation, and a 200% tariff on imported pharmaceuticals, but not for at least a year in order to give companies time to move production to this country. www.morningbrew.com
After two years on the job, Linda Yaccarino said today she is stepping down as CEO of X. Her sudden departure comes one day after xAI, the artificial intelligence startup also owned by Elon Musk merged with X and issued an antisemitic post praising Hitler. Yaccarino did not mention the post, or give any reason for her departure. She’d come from an executive role at NBCUniversal and was seen as a stabilizing force at X. But it’s become more and more difficult to soothe advertisers upset by rants from Musk and now, the Hitler post. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/09/nx-s1-5462728/x-linda-yaccarino-elon-musk
Boeing delivered 60 new jets in June, the most since December 2023 – weeks before the door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines jet. 150 total planes were delivered in the second quarter – the best output for that period since 2018. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/08/boeing-airplane-deliveries-june.html
The 20-year old rule requiring travelers who are not part of TSA’s PreCheck program to remove their shoes at airport checkpoints has been eliminated, effective immediately. TSA screened about 2.5m people a day last year. Checking shoes began after Richard Reid, who came to be known as the “shoe bomber” tried unsuccessfully to ignite explosives in his shoe on a Paris to Miami flight in 2001. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/08/tsa-shoes-airport-security.html

Amazon reports that spending during yesterday’s first four hours of its annual Prime Day sale was down 14% compared to last year. But this year’s event is lasting two extra days, which could account for the drop-off. www.morningbrew.com
As of today, the Max app is going back to its original name – HBO Max. That’s the name it used for four years before the merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery. If you’re already a subscriber, there’s nothing you need to do – at least not for now. Management says the re-branding is the result of their realizing that consumers are not asking for more content – they’re asking for better content. They feel rebranding with the 50-year heritage HBO name expresses that dynamic. It comes as part of the year-long process of WBD splitting its streaming and studios from its cable TV networks. https://www.myjournalcourier.com/news/article/hbo-max-rebrand-warner-bros-20762759.php
