LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A brush fire burning east of Temecula prompted the closure of Highway 79 this morning. According to Cal Fire, the Madera Fire had burned 25 acres as of 11a. The fire was reported around 9:30a in the area of Pauba Road and Winners Circle and was burning uphill, away from homes, according to reports from the scene. Cal Fire requested that Temecula Parkway, also known as Highway 79, be closed from Vail Lake to Pauba. No evacuations were announced for the lightly populated area. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/10/brush-fire-burning-in-rural-area-east-of-temecula/
Today’s heatwave will also bring a “multi-day extreme ozone event” to much of LA, Orange and Riverside Counties, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Smog levels are expected to be “moderate” today in Temecula – possibly worse with local fire smoke. It will be unhealthy for sensitive groups in Lake Elsinore, Corona, Hemet and Menifee as well as in the Coachella Valley. https://patch.com/california/temecula/extreme-smog-coincide-temecula-heatwave
Yesterday’s 28-acre Steele Fire in Rancho San Diego was 85% contained as of this morning. It began around 2:15p with its forward advance halted about two hours later. Evacuation orders and road closures were lifted late yesterday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. https://www.kpbs.org/news/environment/2025/07/09/vegetation-fire-in-rancho-san-diego-prompts-evacuations
Orange County fire investigators say a 13-year old boy started Monday’s Rancho Fire in Laguna Beach with illegal fireworks. The fire burned four acres and caused power outages and the evacuation of about 100 homes. Surveillance video clearly showing a juvenile lighting a firework and fleeing the scene led to Tuesday’s arrest. https://www.nbcnews.com/weather/wildfires/13-year-old-suspected-setting-fireworks-sparked-southern-california-wi-rcna217781
Perris Mayor Michael Vargas urged resident to take caution and stay inside after reports of local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity yesterday. He said, “The city is committed to protecting the dignity and well-being of all our residents.” ICE has arrested about 2,800 people since June in the LA area. https://patch.com/california/banning-beaumont/rivco-mayor-tells-residents-stay-inside-amid-ice-activity
Trash is starting to pile up in several San Diego County cities due to a national labor dispute. Local workers for Republic Services are honoring a strike by Teamsters Local 439 in Stockton and in Boston where the strike for higher wages, better health insurance and pension benefits all began. Republic workers in Chula Vista and Carlsbad say working their jobs is the same as crossing the Stockton picket line. Backup plans for trash pickup in Chula Vista and Carlsbad have yet to be announced. https://patch.com/california/carlsbad/hold-your-nose-san-diego-county-trash-service-has-stalled-during-national-labor

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres got stomped by the Diamondbacks 8-2. The Dodgers lost in ten innings to the Brewers in Milwaukee 3-2 on a walk-off RBI single by Jackson Chourio. Yesterday’s biggest blowout was the 13-0 shutout of the Giants by the Phillies in Philadelphia. The Angels beat Texas 11-8. The Angels and Padres series conclude today. The Dodgers and Giants have the day off.
Padres closing pitcher, Robert Suarez has been added to the National League All-Star roster as an injury replacement for Atlanta’s Chris Sale. That gives San Diego four players on this year’s All-Star team, including two from a bullpen ranked 4th in the Majors for ERA. Suarez’s 25 saves are tied for the most in the Majors right now with former Padres closer Josh Hader. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/08/padres-closer-robert-suarez-added-to-nl-all-star-roster/
In the NFL – After initial interest, former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has opted out of buying up to a 10% stake in his former team, saying it was too expensive. It may have been, since the $7.3b valuation at which he’d have bought-in would have set a record for an NFL franchise. Manning also noted that it would have created conflicts with his current projects including his job as broadcaster for ESPN. The Mara and Tisch families each own 50% of the team. John Mara’s grandfather founded the team exactly 100 years ago for $500. Steve Tisch’s father bought his 50% in 1991 for about $71m. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45703430/eli-manning-passes-buying-ownership-stake-giants
In Major League Soccer playoffs – Last night in Los Angeles, LAFC shut out the Colorado Rapids 3-0. They play Dallas on Saturday. Also Saturday, LAFC hosts DC United and San Diego FC is at Soldier Field in Chicago to play Chicago Fire FC. https://www.espn.com/soccer/schedule/_/date/20250709/league/usa.1
In golf – The Scottish Open teed off today. Robert Macintyre is the defending champion. There was a four-way tie for first place at 6-under par 64 after round 1. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In tennis – At Wimbledon, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka was upset by American, Amanda Anisimova who will now advance to the women’s finals.

The minutes of the Federal Reserve’s June meeting reveal that the majority of its members see interest rate cuts coming this year. What they don’t agree on is when and how many. Ten committee members expect two or more cuts, two expect just one, and seven anticipate none, with most of the latter group concerned that tariffs will cause inflation. www.morningbrew.com
The U.S. Senate yesterday confirmed Bryan Bedford as the new head of the Federal Aviation Administration. The near-party-line vote was 53-43. Bedford’s experience includes being CEO of Republic Airways since 1999. Democrats and safety advocates opposed his nomination after Bedford declined to commit to the 1,500-hour training requirement for pilots that had been put in place by Congress in 2009 after a New York plane crash. www.apnews.com
President Trump yesterday set a 50% tariff rate for imports from Brazil, protesting the treatment of former radical-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of plotting a coup attempt following his loss in the 2022 election. Trump called Bolsonaro’s current trial a “witch hunt”. The tariff will go into effect August 1. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/09/nx-s1-5462903/trump-brazil-tariff-bolsonaro
Shares of WK Kellogg jumped 30% today on news that candy maker, Ferrero will buy the cereal giant for $3.1b. The $23 per share offering price is 31% above the stock’s Wednesday close. The original Kellogg company rebranded as Kellanova two years ago, focusing on snacks including Pringles and Cheez-It and spinning off its cereal business as WK Kellogg. Mars candy company, makers of M&Ms agreed to buy Kellanova for $36m last year in a deal that has yet to close. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/09/cereal-maker-wk-kellogg-shares-jump-report-possible-deal-with-ferrero.html
After five weeks of modest declines, the average for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage ticked up to 6.72% from last week’s 6.67%. One year ago, the average was 6.89%. Higher mortgage rates tend to stifle mortgage activity and home sales. Rates have stayed at a level that have caused sales to slump since 2022. Last year, sales of previously occupied homes in the U.S. sank to its lowest level in 30 years, with potential buyers discouraged by a combination of high mortgage rates and ever-increasing home prices. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/10/mortgage-rates-july-10/
Listing prices for resale homes in California are down 1% this spring compared with two years ago with one and a half times as many active listings now as then. Nationwide, sales are 11% below normal. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/10/california-homeowners-flatten-asking-prices-as-listings-jump-50/
