LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
San Diego Sheriff’s deputies found the body of a missing person in a trailer on property on Woods Valley Road just west of Bates Nut Farm late last evening. Due to obvious trauma, the death is being investigated as a homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff at 858 285 6330 or to give an anonymous tip, call Crime Stoppers at 888 580 8477. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/death-investigation-missing-person-found/
Evacuation orders were lifted this morning for East County fires that broke out simultaneously yesterday in Lawson Valley. Around 6:30p yesterday, firefighters received reports that three fires were burning near Lyons Valley and Honey Springs roads, east of Jamul. Within a few hours, the fires — which collectively were being called the Springs Fire — had burned approximately 50 acres. Forward progress was stopped on one of the three fires, but the other two merged. By this morning, that blaze was reported to be 20% contained. A portion of Skyline Truck Trail just south of where the fire burned remained closed to through traffic. This was the second day in a row that a brush fire ignited in East County and forced evacuations. On Wednesday afternoon, a fire was reported off Star Acres Drive, north of Highway 94 in the Jamul area. That fire burned 28 acres before it was fully contained yesterday afternoon. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/10/three-brush-fires-burning-in-east-county-force-evacuations/
At a packed Temecula City Council meeting this week, more than a dozen speakers defended Old Town’s live music scene and asked for changes to the enforcement of sound restrictions in Old Town. The big turnout was the result of popular music venue, Baily’s decision several weeks ago to cancel all outdoor live music after repeatedly being cited for violating the 70-decibel noise limit in Old Town. One musician told council members that the limit is unreasonable for bands, since everyday things like washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers, normal person-to-person conversation, and traffic noise are typically around 75 decibels. A sound engineer noted that sound coming from the podium at the city council meeting was 82 decibels. No action was taken, since it was not an agenda item. City staff and council members will meet with local business owners and musicians to determine the next step, now that it’s clear public sentiment is on the side of venues and performers. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/10/temecula-community-fills-city-hall-to-fight-sound-ordinance-please-dont-take-our-music-away/
There was a 3.7 magnitude earthquake 3 miles west of Borrego Spring yesterday afternoon at 5:17p. It was lightly felt in Pala and as far away as San Diego and Riverside. An even stronger quake measuring 4.3 hit 9 miles west of Calipatria on the southeast shore of Salton Sea at 2:55 this morning. It was only locally felt and was followed by three aftershocks. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci41019143/executive https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci41019687/executive

The Dodgers and Giants were off yesterday. The Angels lost 11-4 to the Rangers. The final series before the All-Star Break begins today with the Padres hosting Philadelphia, the Dodgers hosting the Giants, and the Angels hosting the Diamondbacks. The Detroit Tigers currently have the best record in the Majors at 59 and 35 – 13 games ahead of second-place Kansas City in the American League Central division. In the AL East, Toronto leads the Yankees by 2 games. In the AL West, Houston has the lead, with Seattle in second by seven games and the Angels in fourth, ten games off the pace. In the National League East, Philadelphia lead the Mets by 1 ½ games. In the Central, the Cubs at 55 and 38 lead the Brewers by two games. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow fell 6 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 was down a quarter percent. The Nasdaq gained a small fraction. Gold was today’s safe haven, trading up $40 on the Comex at $3,365.70 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.81 to $68.38 a barrel.
Part of today’s stock downturn can be attributed to President Trump yesterday announcing a 35% tariff on Canadian imports beginning August 1. He once again cited fentanyl smuggling as the reason for tariffs, while also complaining about retaliatory duties imposed by leaders in Ottawa. The levy is separate from the existing 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, 25% on autos, and upcoming 50% on copper. Trump suggested the new 35% tariff on other imports could be increased by a like amount of any retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada on US imports. 43 pounds of fentanyl was seized at the northern border last year with 58 pounds confiscated so far this year. In separate news, the President said he intents to impose blanket tariffs of 15% or 20% on most trade partners – up from the current 10%. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/11/trump-announces-35percent-tariffs-on-canada-starting-aug-1.html
Levi Strauss Company says its sales and profits will be more than expected this year – as long as tariffs don’t get any higher. The jeans makers says it’s doing what it can to absorb some of the increased cost brought on by tariffs to avoid large price increases. Though the company doesn’t say exactly where everything it sells comes from, much of its supply is from Southeast Asia, with many of those countries being targeted by Trump tariffs. The company acknowledged business is good and that it has been cutting back on promotions lately anyway, leading to more full-price selling. Some of its newest offerings are set with premium pricing, which is being well-received, giving Levi’s maneuvering room against the tariff headwind. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/10/levi-strauss-levi-earnings-q2-2025.html
A development group that had previously looked into building a Major League Soccer stadium on bayfront property in Chula Vista is back with an even bigger vision. The project, named Pangaea would have a large tennis complex, a water polo academy, several hotels, a retail village, tech office buildings, an IMAX theater, and an elevated mini-golf venue co-owned by Tiger Woods. A 50k-seat soccer stadium would be part of a second phase of the development. The property is 124 acres at 990 Bay Boulevard – just south of the newly opened Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/10/massive-tennis-anchored-sports-complex-in-play-for-chula-vista-bayfront/

San Diego International is one of 18 California airports that will receive federal funds to help soundproof nearby homes from the impact of arriving and departing jet planes. The FAA’s Airport Improvement Program has awarded San Diego International $15m. Over the past 20 or more years, owners of nearly 6k homes in Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Bankers Hill, Middletown, Golden Hill and South Park have benefitted from what’s known as the Quieter Home Program which covers retrofitted exterior doors and windows, new ventilation and air exchange systems and things as simple as caulking and weather stripping. The improvements can take time and are prioritized by length of ownership and how loud passing jets are. Waitlists are currently a year or two. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/10/san-diego-airport-gets-15m-to-soundproof-nearby-homes/

ORDERS
- Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments. Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
- Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places. It’s now only a recommendation. Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis. They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices. Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended. Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
- County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began. They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
- Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours. But no test is necessary.
PANDEMIC SERVICES
