SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The All-Star Game is today at 5p on Fox.  It’s the first time this century that the All-Star Game has been played in Atlanta and the first time ever in Truist Park, which was built in 2017.  This year’s top vote-getters were Aaron Judge for the American League and Shohei Ohtani for the National.  The Dodgers lead all teams with five players on the All-Star team.  The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners have four each.  The Dodgers and Tigers each have three on the starting lineup.  There are 19 first-time All-Stars.  The Padres’ Manny Machando is part of the National League starting lineup. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45576753/2025-mlb-all-star-game-schedule-how-watch-rosters

Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh won yesterday’s Home Run Derby, edging out Tampa third baseman Junior Caminero in the final round, 18 to 15.  Raleigh is the first catcher to win the competition.  He did it with his father, Todd pitching and his 15-year-old brother catching.  Not bad for a third-round draft pick. https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/article/cal-raleigh-wins-the-home-run-derby-continuing-his-dream-season-120607522.html

In what could be the final step before adding automated ball-strike systems to regular season games next year, ABS will be available in tonight’s All-Star Game.  It’s been used in the minor leagues since 2019.  The MLB system sets the top of the strike zone at 53.5% of the batter’s height and the bottom at 27%.  The width is the width of home plate for all batters.  The robot call is made at the midpoint of home plate.  That’s different from the rule book for umpires which considers the strike zone to be a cube.  ABS will only come into play if a catcher, pitcher or batter challenges an umpire’s call.  Each team gets two challenges and retains all successful challenges.  In spring training, batters won exactly half of their challenges, while catchers won 56%.  Pitchers only won 41% of call challenges. https://apnews.com/article/robot-umpires-mlb-allstar-game-9c50203a1ba8bf9a1969ea5c2cf7cc16

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred and players’ union head Tony Clark say talks are under way to look into allowing major league players to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics during a special, extended All-Star Break that summer.  The World Baseball Softball Confederation said yesterday the baseball tournament will be July 15-20, 2028 at Dodger Stadium.  The league met with LA28 organizers yesterday in Atlanta as Olympic officials were meeting with the players’ union.  A number of major league players have expressed interest in either playing for Team USA or the team of their home country.  https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/45746510/mlb-exploring-players-participating-2028-la-olympics

In the NFL – Kansas City Chiefs and right guard Trey Smith have agreed on a four-year $94m contract extension.  $70m of it is guaranteed.  That makes him the highest-paid interior lineman in league history. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45747043/sources-chiefs-trey-smith-agree-4-year-94m-deal

In Major League Soccer – Tomorrow, San Diego hosts Toronto, the Galaxy host Austin, and LAFC plays Minnesota United in St. Paul.

In racing – The summer horse racing season in Del Mar opens this Friday.

The University of Michigan made history this past weekend, becoming the first school ever to have a first-round pick in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL drafts all in the same year.  As icing on the cake, the Wolverines also had a first-round pick in the Major League Soccer draft with Jason Bucknor going to the Galaxy. https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/article/cal-raleigh-wins-the-home-run-derby-continuing-his-dream-season-120607522.html

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 8 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 dropped a quarter percent.  The Nasdaq gained four tenths.  Gold traded $23.30 lower on the Comex at $3,335.80 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 68 cents to $66.30 a barrel.

Numbers released today by the Labor Department show inflation is heating up and could be early signs that the effect of President Trump’s tariffs is now showing up on store shelves.  Prices rose 0.3% between May and June.  The annual overall inflation rate was 2.7% in June.  Core inflation was 2.9%.  Both are the largest upticks since Trump took office.  Meanwhile the average tariff on imported goods is the highest it’s been since the Great Depression of the 1930s.  It’s now even less likely the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates this month. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/15/nx-s1-5468293/inflation-cpi-consumer-prices-tariffs

According to WalletHub, the San Diego metro area has the fifth-worst inflation in the country.  Earlier this year, it was THE worst.  Seattle-Tacoma now has that distinction, followed by Boston and Chicago. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/san-diego-among-metro-areas-biggest-inflation-problems-study

Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution said yesterday it will upgrade its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant to make low-cost electric vehicle batteries.  The lithium iron phosphate battery cells (known as LFP, for the first letter of the three elements’ symbols) would cost less than current EV battery packs because they don’t require expensive cobalt and nickel like lithium ion batteries.  Ultium says commercial production of LFP cells could begin by late 2027.  GM also said yesterday that it has invested $900m in new battery development labs in Michigan. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/14/gm-lg-ultium-spring-hill-tennessee-plant-ev-batteries.html

Nearly one third of the 100 largest markets are now seeing home price declines, according to mortgage technology firm, ICE.  The biggest price gains are in the Northeast and Midwest.   Inflated prices, high mortgage rates, increasing supply of homes for sale and decreasing demand because of the first three factors have all joined forces to cool the housing market.  Inventory nationwide is up 29% compared with one year ago. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/14/us-housing-markets-falling-prices.html

Honey Baked Ham is opening a new location in the Temecula-Murrieta area.  An exact location has yet to be announced, but the deal is just about complete.  The company only has two other stores in Riverside county – one in the city of Riverside, the other in Rancho Cucamonga.  There are 32 in California out of a total of 455 in 48 states.  Honey Baked opened its first store in 1957 in Detroit.  The company is still family-owned by descendants of the founder, Harry Hoenselaar.  The new store could be open in time for this year’s holiday season, but no later than spring 2026.

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary says drug affordability will be a factor when granting companies new voucher that speed up the approval of some treatments.  The priority voucher plan aims to cut review time for new drugs to as little as one or two months for companies the FDA believes are supporting “U.S. national interests.”  This is the first time that drug prices have been mentioned as criterion for the new program.  The Trump administration needs lower drug prices to balance threatened 200% tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals.  Critics worry about the risks of sped up drug reviews and companies that are considered political allies of Trump getting fast-tracked thanks to their connections. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/11/fda-to-consider-drug-affordability-when-speeding-up-approvals-makary.html

Space startup, Varda had announced last week that it had raised $187m in funding from a pair of venture capital firms towards its goal of manufacturing drugs in space.  They say medicines crystallize differently in orbit due to low gravity, allowing certain drugs to be manufactured more easily.  Varda’s W-series 1 capsule received FAA flight approval last year. They had successfully created the drug Ritonavir in space the previous year.  Alabama-based Varda is the first company to process materials in space outside the International Space Station. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/10/space-startup-varda-medicine-orbit.html
