LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Four fires continue to burn across Riverside County yesterday.  The largest at 2,387 acres – the Wolf Fire was finally fully contained after 17 days.  The Fobes Fire was first reported yesterday around 1p in a remote area near Highway 74 and Morris Ranch Road.  It’s burned about 30 acres with no structures threatened.  Highway 74 remains open.  There was a two-acre fire in the La Quinta/Thermal area.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/brush-fires-send-smoke-across-riverside-county-see-where-they-are

A man accused of robbing and sexually assaulting a woman in her home in San Marcos was arrested yesterday.  The burglary and assault happened July 8 at a home in the 1400 block of Grand Avenue in San Marcos.  41-year old Adolfo Brito allegedly forced his way in armed with a box cutter, demanding the victim remove several items of jewelry.  Members of the Sheriff’s Fugitive Task Force located Brito on Park Center Drive in Vista yesterday and booked him into San Diego Central Jail.  https://patch.com/california/carlsbad/man-accused-breaking-north-county-home-sexually-assaulting-woman

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – Yesterday’s All-Star Game made history.  The nine-inning game ended in a 6-6 tie after the National League gave up six unanswered runs.  Until 2022, All-Star Games could go to extra innings, the same as regular season and spring training games.  The latest collective bargaining agreement from 2022 created the “swing-off” which was used for the first time to decide the winner of yesterday’s game.  A combination home run derby and hockey shootout, three players are selected from the American and National league team lineups and alternate with each getting three swings.  Whichever team gets the most home runs wins.  Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber had been 0 for 2 with a walk in the regular game.  He batted second for the National League in the swing-off, hitting three home runs with his three swings and giving the National League a 4-3 edge.  The American’ league’s final batter failed to homer, giving the NL with win and earning Schwarber the game’s MVP award. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45750275/kyle-schwarber-leads-national-league-win-2025-mlb-all-star-game-first-tiebreak-home-run-swing-off

A highlight of last night’s game in Atlanta was a multimedia recreation of Hank Aaron’s record-breaking 715th home run at the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in 1974.  Aaron’s widow, Billye Aaron was among the 41,702 cheering from the stands last night as a fireball shot from home plate to the left-center fence signified home run #715, breaking Babe Ruth’s nearly 40-year old home run record. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45749982/mlb-honors-hank-aaron-re-creating-homer-all-star-game

The regular season resumes tomorrow with the Padres playing the Nationals in Washington, the Giants taking on the Blue Jays in Toronto, the Angels against the Phillies in Philadelphia, and the Dodgers hosting the Brewers.

In the NBA – Bradley Beal has agreed to a contract buyout with the Phoenix Suns, paving the way for him to join the Clippers on a two-year $11m deal with a player option after he clears waivers.  That would make the 32-year old, three-time All-Star one of the top available free agents next summer. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45755171/bradley-beal-agrees-buyout-suns-join-clippers

In the NHL – The league has released the full season schedule for 2025-26.  32 teams will play a combined 1,312 games between October 7 and April 16 with the playoffs beginning the following weekend, lasting through June.  Among highlights, Alex Ovechkin will begin his 21st NHL season when he and the Washington Capitals host Boston on October 8.  Ovechkin is at 897 career goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 at the end of last season. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45755121/nhl-releases-2025-26-schedule-last-82-game-season-new-cba

In Major League Soccer – Tonight, San Diego hosts Toronto, the Galaxy host Austin, and LAFC plays Minnesota United in St. Paul.

In racing – The summer horse racing season in Del Mar opens this Friday.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks had modest gains.  The Dow was up a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each gained about a tenth.  Gold traded up $22 on the Comexa at $3,358.70 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 22 cents at $66.30 a barrel.

President Trump has ended his threats to fire politically independent Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, whom he’d appointed to the position in his first administration.  Powell, as head of an independent agency has resisted demands from the President that interest rates be lowered – something that’s looking increasingly unlikely anytime soon due to a recent rise in inflation.  Constitutional experts say the President doesn’t have the power to remove Powell, whose term as chairman is up next May.  The President said yesterday that he won’t fire Powell for anything but fraud, which he suggests the head of the Fed has committed by spending $2.5b renovating Fed headquarters in Washington DC.  That renovation has been going on for seven years, but is only now being questioned by the White House.  Trump reportedly favors the head of the National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett to be Powell’s replacement.  Kevin Warsh, a former member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011 is another possibility. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/how-trump-could-use-an-expensive-fed-building-renovation-to-oust-powell

Even as it’s expanding its battery development, General Motors is increasing production of gas-powered SUVs and pickup trucks by starting production of them in Michigan.  GM currently makes Cadillac Escalades in Arlington, Texas and Silverado and Sierra pickups in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Those models will now also be manufactured at the Orion plant in Michigan.  It’s part of GM’s June commitment to invest $4b in U.S. manufacturing facilities.  GM CEO Mary Barra had said four years ago that GM would exclusively offer EVs by 2035.  But the biggest U.S. automaker has had to pivot in the face of soft demand for EVs.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/15/gm-escalade-silverado-sierra-michigan-orion-assembly.html

British aerospace and defense company Rolls-Royce says it will spend $75m to expand its manufacturing facility in Aiken, South Carolina.  The investment will boost the output of diesel engines used as backup power for data centers and other critical infrastructure.  Production will begin in 2027. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/15/rolls-royce-south-carolina.html

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol is telling employees that beginning in October, they need to be in the office four days a week or face a pay cut.  But he is offering a cash payment for voluntary exit by those who don’t want to spend an extra day per week at their desk.  Last October, two months after his arrival as CEO, Niccols mandated a three-day in-office work week for corporate employees.  Though Niccol himself maintains an office in Newport Beach, he’s lately been spending his non-travel time at headquarters in Seattle.  He’s been trying to turn around a slump at Starbucks – so far without measurable success, causing Starbucks stock to decline 2% in today’s trading.  Starbucks has about 16k employees working outside of store locations. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/14/starbucks-to-require-employees-in-office-four-days-a-week-offer-payouts.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Trying to boost listenership, SiriusXM yesterday launched a cheaper, ad-supported plan called SiriusXM Play.  The option is currently available on a limited basis. It’ll be less than $7 per month for in-car and streaming with further package pricing and other details yet to be announced.  Live sports play-by-play, certain artist-led music channels and Howard Stern are not part of the new package.  They will remain part of the commercial-free plans at between $10 and $25 per month. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/15/sirius-bets-on-advertising-to-capture-new-listeners.html

The Senate voted with Vice President Vance as the tie breaker to advance debate on the package of funding cuts proposed by the President, including taking back $1.1b allocated to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, along with $7.9b earmarked for international efforts to quell famine and disease.  National Public Radio, which media experts say has been targeted for revenge by President Trump says it receives only about 1% of its funding from federal grants, and that the cuts will primarily affect local public radio and television stations who rely much more heavily on those grants.  Part of yesterday’s debate was a plan to continue directly funding 28 public radio stations serving Native American communities in nine states. Those funds would continue through the Department of the Interior.  Full disclosure – Rez Radio does not receive any direct federal funding.  It is 100% supported by the Pala Band of Mission Indians and private donations.

For about a dozen years, Rez Radio has offered a free phone listen line to hear our live broadcast over any telephone.  The company that made that free service available has been taken over and the service is no longer free.  The phone number 712 774 5748 is still active, but no longer connects to our stream.  We’d like to know from you if that service is of value before we go spending limited budget to reactivate it.  Let us know at 91.3@palatribe.com.  Note that our live stream is still available with the free Rez Radio App, at our website, on smart speakers, and through streaming aggregators including iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and Radio.Garden.  We’re just looking for your opinion on whether we should spend money to keep the phone listen line, possibly at the expense of other things.
