The Pala Fire, which began around 11:20a Saturday south of Highway 76 and east of Couser Canyon burned about 7 acres before its progress was stopped with heavy air support. It was 50% contained within two hours when evacuation orders that had been issued for the valley east to the casino with warnings issued for the southern half of the reservation were lifted. There was heavy smoke from the mild easterly winds in Pala and Pauma Valley for about an hour around noon. Rez Radio provided live coverage of firefighting efforts on Saturday. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/07/17/news/pala-vegetation-fire-100-percent-contained/79370.html

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – In their first series since the All-Star Break, the Padres took two out of three on the road against the Nationals. Yesterday’s 8-1 rout included a first-inning grand slam homer by Xander Bogaerts. San Diego starting pitcher Nick Pivetta got his 10th win of the season, giving up the Nats only run in the 5th of his six innings. In Los Angeles, the visiting Brewers swept the Dodgers. In Toronto, the Blue Jays swept the visiting Giants. That puts the Padres 2 ½ games up on the third place Giants and closes them to within 3 ½ games of the Dodgers. The Angels took two out of three in Philadelphia. Today, the Padres are in Miami, the Dodgers host the Twins, the Giants are in Atlanta, and the Angels are in New York to play the Mets.

In the NFL – President Trump is threatening to hold up the deal for a new NFL stadium in Washington if the team does not restore its old name – now considered a racial slur. Both the Washington Commanders and the Cleveland Guardians have had their current names for three years and say they have no plans to change back to previous names that were considered offensive to Native Americans. Washington first announced plans to drop the former team name in 2020 during a broad societal reckoning with racism. The Commanders and the District of Columbia announced a deal earlier this year to build a new home for the team on the site of old RFK stadium, which the team called home for more than 30 years. https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/45783141/trump-calls-commanders-guardians-reverse-name-changes
In the NBA – Chris Paul has agreed to a deal to return to the Clippers for his 21st NBA season, which is expected to be his last. The 40-year old had at least four teams interested his services at point guard. But the 12-time All-Star free agent chose the contending Clippers with their shared history. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45787206/chris-paul-reuniting-clippers-21st-nba-season
In the WNBA – Team Collier beat Team Clark 151-131 Saturday in the All-Star Game. Team captain Caitlin Clark had to sit the game out due to injury. She also did not participate in the three-point contest, which was won by Sabrina Ionescu. https://www.cbssports.com/wnba/news/winners-and-losers-from-wnba-all-star-3-point-contest-skills-challenge-sabrina-ionescu-outduels-allisha-gray/
In the NHL – The Anaheim Ducks have signed goaltender Lukas Dostal to a five-year contract extension for $32.5m. The 25-year old had a 23-23 and 7 record with one shutout and .903 save percentage in 54 games last season. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45764306/ducks-goalie-lukas-dostal-reach-5-year-contract-extension
In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, San Diego FC and Vancouver tied at 1 at Snapdragon Stadium and the Galaxy and LAFC tied at 3 at BMO Stadium in LA. The MLS All-Stars play the Liga MX All-Stars Wednesday in Austin. https://www.espn.com/soccer/schedule/_/date/20250718/league/usa.1
In golf – At The Open in Portrush, Northern Ireland, Scottie Scheffler ran away with it, shooting 17-under par 267 – four strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In racing – The summer horse racing season began Friday at Del Mar. Opening weekend was marred with the injury of a horse and rider in a fall in Saturday’s 5th race. Three-year old filly Origami was ambulanced from the track, but later able to walk. Jockey Tiago Pereira was taken to a local hospital. He’ll need surgery for facial fractures. Preakness winner, Journalism will arrive here tomorrow and spend at least a month at Del Mar before a decision will be made on his next race. It could be the $1m Pacific Classic at Del Mar on August 30. Journalism finished second to Sovereignty at both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/20/journalism-is-returning-to-del-mar-but-will-he-race-here/ https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/horse-and-jockey-fall-in-race-at-del-mar-racetrack-during-opening-weekend/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained over a half percent. The S&P 500 was up 6 tenths. And the Nasdaq rose ¾ of a percent. Gold shot up 1 ½% – up $50 an ounce on the Comex to $3,408.30. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 17 cents to $67.17 a barrel.
Former Burger King executive Jonathan Fitzpatrick will be the next CEO of Subway, effective July 28. In between the two fast food chains, he’d spend 12 years leading Driven Brands, an automotive services provider. Fitzpatrick replaces John Chidsey, who retired at the end of 2024, having overseen the $9.6b sale of Subway to private equity firm Roark Capital in 2023. Subway is the largest U.S. restaurant chain by number of stores at 19,500. But it’s been losing market share for more than a dozen years. Sales were down 3.8% last year. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/21/subway-taps-burger-king-veteran-jonathan-fitzpatrick-as-next-ceo.html
Southwest Airlines will begin selling tickets with assigned seating one week from tomorrow (July 29). It’s 50-year old policy of open seating ends January 27 next year, when it will begin boarding flights in eight distinct groups. Though plans for this were announced six months ago, this is the first time Southwest has set a date for the change, which is part of a massive overhaul of its business model. Other changes included charging for checked bags for all but top tier tickets. Both changes create new revenue streams to allow Southwest to keep up with more profitable rivals. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/21/southwest-airlines-sets-a-date-plan-for-the-end-of-open-seating.html
The threat by the Trump administration of a 50% tariff on goods from Brazil is sending shock waves through the U.S. coffee industry. Most coffee beans are imported and almost one third of all coffee imports come from Brazil. Other countries from which we get coffee will see tariff increases as well – Vietnam, which produces 17% of the world’s coffee; Columbia, which produces 8%; and Ethiopia and Indonesia, which each produce 6%. With profit margins being thin, retail prices will go up. They’ve already increased 12.7% in June compared with a year earlier. The average price for a pound of ground coffee was $8.13 in June – up a dollar since the beginning of the year. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/21/nx-s1-5470131/us-coffee-prices-brazil-trump-tariffs
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
New this weekend at the movies, though it sold less than half as many tickets as it did in its opening weekend, the man of steel continues to lead the box office by a wide margin. “Superman” sold $57.2m worth of tickets this past weekend. “Jurassic World: Rebirth” sold $23.4m to remain in second place. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” debuted in 3rd place, selling $13m on 1k fewer screens than Superman. “Smurfs” debuted with $11m on 3,500 screens – good for 4th place. “Eddington” opened in 7th place with $4.2m on 2,100 screens. The weekend total for the Top Ten movies was the lowest since the start of summer, but still better than average for this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W29/
Comic Con opens this Thursday at the San Diego Convention Center, running through Sunday. Though sold out as usual, it will be slower than some banner years, with Hollywood not participating at the level it does some years. Marvel is apparently taking a “go big or stay home” attitude and not planning a big presence. Rival DC Studios who just released the new version of “Superman” will be there, but not quite to the level some expected. Hollywood film production overall was down 22% in the first quarter compared with a year earlier, according to FilmLA. That’s part of the reason Gov. Newsom signed off this month on a $750m tax credit for films and TV shows made in California. Some of the major panels this week will include George Lucas to talk about his new museum in Los Angeles – the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, South Park creators Trey parker and Matt Stone, the new “Predator Badlands” movie starring Elle Fanning, the new “Tron” movie, and “Project Hail Mary” – the film adaptation of the hit sci-fi book. About 350k people are expected at Comic Con. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/18/everything-is-bigger-at-san-diego-comic-con-this-year-except-hollywood/
San Diego Comic-Con organizers and local Indigenous artists have been working to secure more Indigenous artists as presenters at the annual convention. Mervin “Chag” Lowry started presenting five years ago, and spent years with his friend and Kumeyaay artist, Johnny Bear Contreras, talking about putting something bigger together for their communities. The result is the 2025 Indigi-Con which begins its inaugural year this Friday at Park & Market in downtown San Diego. It will feature two days of Native American comics and comic creators, in partnership with the Eyaay Ahuun Foundation and the University of California Humanities Research Institute. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/19/a-new-comic-convention-thats-all-about-indigenous-creators-and-stories/
Former “Cosby Show” star Malcolm Jamal-Warner has died at the age of 54. The actor drowned while swimming on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He was best-known for his character, Theo, the only son of Bill Cosby’s character, Dr. Cliff Huxtable in the top-rated TV series for eight seasons from 1984-1992. https://patch.com/california/hollywood/cosby-show-star-malcolm-jamal-warner-dies-54-reports
Food price shocks that could lead to malnutrition are on the rise, and are increasingly being caused by climate change. Shortages of staple crops due to the climate could lead to political upheaval among the world’s poorest nations. Such disruptions are eventually felt everywhere. Unprecedented heat in February 2024 in Ghana and Ivory Coast where the majority of the world’s cocoa is grown caused global price hikes of 300% for the commodity. The same thing happened with lettuce in Australia, although that was due to flooding. Drought caused prices for vegetables grown in California and Arizona to spike 80% from 2022 through 2024. Food price spikes make it hard to keep down overall inflation, which makes it hard to lower interest rates. The lead author of the report from Barcelona Supercomputing Center says, “It is clear the cost of living played a role in last year’s election in the US.” https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/jul/21/rising-food-prices-driven-by-climate-crisis-threaten-worlds-poorest-report-finds
On this day in music history – July 21,
- 1969, The Beatles began recording “Come Together”. The John Lennon song became the opening track on their final studio album, “Abbey Road” and one half of a double A-sided single along with the George Harrison composition, “Something”.
- In 1973, Jim Croce began the first of two weeks at #1 with “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”. Croce died in a plane crash three months later.
- On the same day in 1973, at a music festival in England where Hells Angels arrived in force to drink the place dry, Chuck Berry was about 20 minutes into his set when he decided to show one of the Angels who’d made it onstage how to do his popular duck-walk. Berry did it from one end of the stage to the other and off into the wings. The band kept playing, the Angels danced, and Chuck hightailed it to his car and drove away, never to return.
- In 1987, Guns N’ Roses released their debut album, “Appetite for Destruction” featuring the singles, “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, and “Paradise City”. - In 1995, an LA judge threw out a lawsuit by five of Michael Jackson’s former security guards alleging they were fired by the singer for knowing too much about nighttime visits by young boys to his Neverland Ranch.
- In 2008, The Police played the first of two nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, capping off their 152-date world Reunion Tour with revenue over $340m.
- In 2017, Justin Bieber was banned from performing in China. Beijing’s Culture Bureau said it was because he’d engaged in “bad behavior.” He joined a long list of musicians who’ve been blacklisted in that country, though most were for making perceived political statements, rather than just for being naughty.

ORDERS
- Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments. Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
- Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places. It’s now only a recommendation. Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis. They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices. Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended. Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
- County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began. They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
- Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours. But no test is necessary.
