LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A domestic violence call in French Valley yesterday in the early morning hours ended with the death of a man inside a home in the 35500 block of Shadow Drive.  Shots were fired from a second story window as police called for people in the home to come out.  At least two deputies returned fire.  It’s unclear how the man died or who shot him.  An injured woman exited with a baby after a few minutes.  She was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.  The baby was examined as well.  No deputies were injured.  Those involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave as the incident is investigated.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/21/man-dies-during-gunfight-with-deputies-at-french-valley-home/

A four-hour standoff yesterday morning in Fallbrook eventually ended with the arrest of 44-year old Devin Jadine Jones for allegedly shooting her boyfriend.  Deputies responded to the reported shooting in the 100 block of Avo Drive just before 1a yesterday.  The victim was taken to a hospital with a bullet graze would to the head.  He was treated and released later in the day.  Jones holed up in the mobile home residence and refused to give herself up to SWAT officers for about four hours.  The stalemate ended around 5:30a, with details of the arrest not available.  Jones is being held without bail in Vista jail pending arraignment tomorrow. https://www.newsbreak.com/times-of-san-diego-555715/4123706242748-fallbrook-woman-arrested-after-allegedly-shooting-boyfriend-in-head

A 38-year old Vista woman was arrested for a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 28-year old man walking on a bike path Sunday.  Jessica Brooklyn drove her SUV about four miles on the Inland Rail Trail bike path before striking the National City man.  He died before arriving at the hospital.  It’s unknown what Brooklyn was doing on the bike path.  But her booking included suspicion of murder, hit and run, and driving under the influence.  As of yesterday, she was being held without bail at Las Colinas jail. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/21/driver-arrested-after-fatal-hit-and-run-crash-in-vista/

There was another fatal DUI-related hit-and-run around 2:30a Sunday on the 215 in Murrieta.  44-year old Gladys Cruz Maeda of Lake Elsinore was on the shoulder of the southbound side near Murrieta Hot Springs Road inspecting damage to her Nissan Murano from a water-filled traffic barrel when she was struck by a 2004 Honda Accord.  Evidence collected by the CHP led them to arrest a man, whose identity had not been revealed as of yesterday.  He was booked into French Valley jail on suspicion of DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/21/woman-struck-killed-by-suspected-dui-driver-on-murrieta-freeway/

Cal Fire is ready to start a $12m improvement project at Ramona Airport to allow larger firefighting tanker aircraft to load and deliver fire retardant more quickly.  One of the tankers to be based there carries up to 4k gallons.  That’s three times the capacity of current planes based in Ramona.   Beginning next month, fire retardant bays at Ramona will be demolished with new ones to be built over the next eight to twelve months.  At that point, one of seven C-130H planes that Cal Fire acquired from the U.S. Coast Guard will be based in Ramona.  Concrete pavement installed in 2000 that has since failed is being replaced as well.  Work is not expected to impact civilian flight operations. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/22/cal-fire-air-base-in-ramona-getting-12-million-upgrade/

Yesterday morning’s power outage in the Winterwarm/San Luis Rey Heights part of Fallbrook continued to affect up to a dozen SDG&E customers this morning.  The utility said it would be fixed by noon today. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres edged Miami 2-1 thanks to RBI hits by Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado in the second inning.  Adrian Morejon got the win even though he didn’t pitch past the second. Robert Suarez got his 29th save of the season.  The Dodgers beat the visiting Twins 5-2.  Shohei Ohtani gave up his first run of the season to All-Star MVP Bryon Buxton in the top of the first inning.  The nice thing about being a double threat player is that Ohtani was able to bat in the bottom half of the inning and hit a two-run homer to make up for it.  Will Smith homered in both the 4th and 6th innings and the Dodgers never looked back.  Atlanta beat the visiting Giants 9-5.  The Mets beat the Angels 7-5.  All series continue today.

In Seattle, the Brewers became the first team this year to win 60 games with a 6-0 shutout of the Mariners.  The Dodgers, Cubs and Blue Jays are all at 59.  Milwaukee is working on an 11-game win streak. https://www.espn.com/mlb/standings

Yesterday’s Red Sox-Phillies game ended in an unusual way.  With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 10th, catcher interference was called when Edmundo Sosa’s check swing hit Red Sox catcher Carlos Navarez’ glove, putting Sosa on base and forcing in the winning run.  It was the first walk-off win on catcher interference since 1971 when interference was called on Cincinnati catching great Johnny Bench. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45791107/phillies-get-walk-win-via-catcher-interference-call

In the NFL – Even though he played his final season with Indianapolis in 2020, eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers made it official yesterday that he retired as a Charger.  Rivers played 16 seasons with the Chargers in both San Diego and LA.  He holds team records in every major category.  He won 137 career games – second in the league among quarterbacks without a Super Bowl ring and 10th all-time. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45791166/former-qb-philip-rivers-announces-retiring-charger

In the WNBA – With the All-Star break over, the season resumes tonight with the Los Angeles Sparks at Washington and four other games.  The Sparks are in 10th place in the 14-team league with an 8 and 14 record.

In Major League Soccer – The MLS All-Stars play the Liga MX All-Stars tomorrow in Austin. https://www.espn.com/soccer/schedule/_/date/20250718/league/usa.1

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 was down a small fraction.  The Nasdaq gained 4 tenths of a percent.  Gold traded higher on the Comex by $35.50 at $3,441.90 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 95 cents to $66.25 a barrel.

It’s earnings week, and some of the early reports aren’t pretty.  General Motors’ profit was off by 35% last quarter including a $1.1b hit due to tariffs that went into effect in April.  Analysts thought it would be worse.  GM cautioned that second half profits will be lower than the first half.  Stock in GM fell 7% today. https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2025/7/22/general-motors-reports-a-35-profit-drop-as-tariffs-weigh-on-car-industry#:~:text=Auto%20giant%20General%20Motors%20has,confirmed%20its%20full%2Dyear%20forecast.

Stellantis, maker of Jeep and Chrysler yesterday announced a surprise loss for the first half of the year, due in part to a $350m tariff hit and costly efforts to turn around the company.  Shipments to the U.S. declined by one fourth in the second quarter compared with a year ago.  A company executive said Stellantis will have to raise prices soon, noting that “tariffs are inherently inflationary”.  www.morningbrew.com

Sherwin Williams paint company reported a decline in do-it-yourself product sales and predicts demand will continue to deteriorate.  Its stock took a dive today after it reported second quarter profits missed their mark by a wide margin.  Second quarter profit dropped by 15.2% even though store sales rose by 2.3%, mainly due to price increases and increased sales to contractors.  Sherwin Williams’ North American brands include Dutch Boy, Cabot and Krylon paints.  https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/2025072274/sherwin-williams-sees-diy-product-sales-fall-with-demand-set-to-deteriorate

Delta Airlines has found a way to sidestep tariffs.  It’s taking delivery of new Airbus A321neo planes in Europe where they’re made, removing the engines, which were made in the U.S. and shipping them stateside to be installed on grounded aircraft here.  That saves a 10% tariff on the engines and expands Delta’s fleet without having to import new aircraft.  Creative ways to avoid tariffs are as old as tariffs themselves.  Another one is shifting production of U.S.-bound products from countries with high tariffs, like China, to places with lower tariff rates, like Vietnam, while still relying on Chinese components and tech expertise.  But some tariff-avoidance tricks drift into illegal territory.  Ford was fined $365m last year for installing temporary seats in cargo vans to import them as lower-tariff rate passenger vehicles. www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The godfather of heavy metal, Ozzy Osbourne has died at the age of 76.  The lead singer of pioneering band Black Sabbath died this morning surrounded by family just two weeks after his farewell show, which was mainly a tribute concert in the band’s home town of Birmingham, England.  It was revealed after suffering a fall in 2020, that Osbourne had Parkinson’s disease.  One of six children in a working-class family, Ozzy had been an early fan of the Beatles.  He dropped out of school at 15, became a manual laborer and briefly turned to petty crime, for which he spent six weeks in jail.  Originally known as Earth, in 1969, the renamed band, Black Sabbath released what is considered the Big Bang of heavy metal … it’s self-titled debut album.  Their second album, “Paranoid” quickly followed.  Even though none of its early releases reached even the upper half of the Billboard Hot 100, those two albums were voted by Rolling Stone readers as among the top ten heavy metal albums of all time.  Sabbath fired Osbourne in 1979 for his legendary excesses.  But he went on to a successful solo career that was commercially more successful than when he was with Sabbath.  He incurred the wrath of animal lovers when in 1981, in front of stunned CBS record executives at company headquarters, he drunkenly bit the head off a live dove.  He repeated the stunt a year later at concert in Des Moines by biting the head off a live bat, which required his getting rabies shots. His second wife and manager, Sharon built a touring festival around him.  Ozzfest became one of the biggest concert attractions of the 1990s, launching a number of careers.  He gained the attention of a whole new audience as the doddering head of household in the MTV reality series “The Osbournes.”  Ozzy briefly reunited with Black Sabbath for a couple of concert tours in 1998.  His final new album, “Patient Number 9” peaked at #2 in 2022.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/22/ozzy-osbourne-dies/

“Where’s the beef?” is a phrase Wendy’s used in a wildly successful ad campaign 40 years ago.  Lately, the answer to that question might be “locked in a bank vault”.  Beef prices are at record highs.  You might say beef is the new eggs.  According to recently released government data, the average price of ground beef rose to $6.12 a pound last week, the first time it’s ever been above $6.  It was $5.47 June of last year and it’s expected to keep going up from here.  Steak prices are averaging $11.49 a pound – up 8% over the past year.  Droughts in various parts of the U.S. have caused cattle herds to shrink to their lowest level in decades.  The drought also increased the price of feed grain.  Higher interest rates hamper farmers’ ability to expand as well.  And we can’t import our way out of the shortage due to tariffs set to increase August 1, with Brazil, one of the world’s biggest beef producers getting an especially high tariff rate.  Because of the nature of the cattle industry, even if the two main factors that have caused the current shortage of domestic beef are fixed, it’ll take years of readjustment to fix things.  To expand a herd, more heifers have to be kept for breeding with fewer sent to slaughter, making the supply problem worse before it gets better. https://www.newsweek.com/ground-beef-prices-record-high-warnings-issued-2101604

The White House yesterday doubled down on President Trump’s threat to hold up a deal for a new Washington football stadium if the city’s team didn’t go back to its old name, which had been dumped five years ago as being a racial slur against Native Americans.  Press secretary Karoline Leavitt made it clear the President’s words on the subject were not another off-hand comment that would later shrugged off as a joke, making them pretty much an official insult to Native Americans.  www.NYTimes.com

Environmentalists are concerned about a proposal to build 83 single-family homes near Guajome Lake, just outside the Vista city limits.  The 17-acre parcel is about a half mile south of Highway 76, along Guajome Lake Road, southeast of Albright Street.  There is currently an abandoned Quonset hut home at the back of the property.  Developer, Rincon Homes has applied for a state density bonus by reserving four of the homes as deed-restricted affordable housing.  About seven acres would remain open space.  Even so, environmentalists are concerned about habitat disruption, and the development cutting off habitat corridors.  A Rincon Homes executive says the project avoids the most sensitive areas and will include mitigation measures.  The project goes before the Planning Commission August 11. https://thecoastnews.com/guajome-lake-development-raises-environmental-concerns/

On this day in music history – July 22,

  • 1963, The Beatles first U.S. album “Introducing The Beatles” was pressed by Vee-Jay records who thought they’d obtained the rights from an EMI affiliate.  Before the album could finally be released in January of ‘64, Capitol Records got an injunction preventing Vee-Jay from doing anything with the discs.  A court finally decided Vee-Jay had the right to release any Beatles songs for which they had masters until October of ’64.  After that, all rights reverted to Capitol and its parent company, EMI.  The multiple label confusion led in part to the flood of Beatles records and extreme number of songs the group had on the U.S. charts in ’64.
  • In 1969, Aretha Franklin was arrested for causing a disturbance in a Detroit parking lot.  After posting $50 bail, she ran down a road sign on the way out of the police station.
  • In 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent their second day filming the promotional film (as they were called before becoming known as music videos) for “Imagine”.  It included John playing and singing at his white piano in an all-white room at their Tittenhurst Park Ascot home in England.
  • In 1977, Elvis Costello’s debut album “My Aim is True” was released in England.
  • In 1996, Donovan had to postpone a nostalgia concert tour of the U.S. because of a 30-year old marijuana conviction in the U.K.  American customs delayed granting him a waiver for a U.S. visa.
  • In 2005, founding member and lead singer of The Chi-Lites, Eugene Record died of cancer.
  • In 2006, the posthumous Johnny Cash album “American V:  A Hundred Highways” hit #1.  The vocals were some of the last things Cash recorded before his death.  The instrumental parts were added later.
  • In 2015, new research at Cambridge University found that a person’s taste in music provides insight into the way they think.  Empathetic people prefer mellow, low-energy music.  Those who seek to analyze patterns in the world prefer punk, heavy metal and more complex music.
