LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Fire broke out along La Posta Road north of Highway 94 a couple of miles west of the Campo Reservation just after noon yesterday. The Posta Fire is now 50% contained at 23 acres.
Wednesday’s Mitchell Fire near Bautista and Glasgow Roads in Anza was 90% contained at 51 acres as of 9a this morning. Evacuation orders had been issued briefly on Wednesday, but were quickly lifted. https://patch.com/california/temecula/brush-fire-burns-east-temecula-grows-over-50-acres
A brush fire spread across open terrain on Camp Pendleton Wednesday, blackening acres of brush but posing no immediate threats to buildings or people. The blaze erupted around midday in the northwestern reaches of the military installation, just south of the Orange County border. Within several hours, the flames had charred about 100 acres, sending smoke across De Luz and Temecula. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/crews-battle-100-acre-fire-north-of-camp-pendleton
Two young men were arrested Wednesday, accused of firing shots in the parking lot of the Menifee Dress For Less store on Antelope Road, possibly to frighten customers. The two were a 19-year old from San Francisco and a 21-year old from Buckeye, Arizona. The elder was out on bail on other charges. Following up on information from witnesses, police spotted the culprits’ vehicle about a mile away and arrested them without incident, obtaining additional evidence in the process. The pair were booked into French Valley jail. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/24/pair-suspected-of-firing-pistols-outside-menifee-store-possibly-to-scare-customers/
A state appeals court this week upheld a Vista judge’s refusal to vacate the first-degree murder conviction for Jessica Lynn Lopez, one of three people convicted in the 2012 slaying of estranged Fallbrook military wife, Brittany Kilgore, who’d been lured, then abducted by one of the defendants. A change in state law stating that people who aren’t the actual killer, didn’t intend to kill the victim, or weren’t major participants in a felony leading to the death cannot be charged with murder created the opportunity for Lopez’s second appeal which has now been denied and upheld. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/23/woman-loses-appeal-in-fallbrook-torture-murder-of-military-wife/

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost 9-7 at St. Louis last night. In Anaheim, Seattle beat the Angels 4-2. No homers for Shohei Ohtani. So, his home run streak ends at five games, which ties the franchise record. Those series continue today. The Dodgers open a series in Boston. The Giants host the Mets.
The Mets today traded two minor leaguers to Baltimore for left-handed relief pitcher Gregory Soto. The 30-year old was an All-Star with Detroit in 2021 and ’22. In 45 appearances this season, Soto has a 3.96 ERA with a 27 ½% strikeout rate. The league trade deadline is coming up next Thursday. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45822947/sources-mets-trade-orioles-left-hander-gregory-soto
The Padres have agreed to terms with all 19 of their 2025 draft picks. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/24/padres-agree-to-terms-with-all-their-2025-draft-picks/
In the NFL – The league is well along in talks to acquire up to a 10% minority stake in ESPN. If the deal goes through as currently structured, ESPN would own all of NFL Network and NFL RedZone instead of just a controlling stake. The talks have been going on for about two years. ESPN is currently 80% owned by Disney and 20% by Hearst. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/24/nfl-media-espn-equity-ownership-deal.html
In the WNBA – Last night, the LA Sparks won 101-86 at Connecticut. Other winners included Las Vegas and Seattle. Three games tonight. The Sparks’ next game is tomorrow in New York.
In the NHL – The Carolina Hurricanes’ Jackson Blake is getting an eight-year, $45m contract extension. The 21-year old forward had 17 goals and 17 assists in 80 regular season games plus three goals and three assists in 15 playoff games last season. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45818950/hurricanes-lock-jackson-blake-8-year-45-million-deal
In Major League Soccer – The season resumes tonight with San Diego hosting Nashville, LAFC hosting Portland, and the Galaxy at Houston.
In golf – At the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, with half the field still on the course for round two, Thorbjom Oleson had the lead into the clubhouse at 14 under par 128. But yesterday’s first round leader, Adam Svenson was still only on today’s second hole as of 11:45a. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In racing – NASCAR Cup at Indianapolis and the Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca this Sunday.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow and Nasdaq were each up a third of a percent. The S&P 500 gained 4 tenths and is headed for a fifth straight record high. Gold fell $41.10 on the Comex to $3,332.40 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 57 cents to $65.46 a barrel – the lowest it’s been since early Spring when prices were in the upper $50 a barrel range due to OPEC+ announcing upcoming production increases and investor fears over recession due to tariffs.
The Federal Communications Commission yesterday approved the sale of CBS parent company Paramount Global to Skydance Media in a deal valued at about $8b. Paramount recently paid $16m to settle a lawsuit by Donald Trump, as a private individual against CBS and “60 Minutes”. “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert criticized that payment as submitting to blackmail after the Paramount/Skydance deal approval was held up by federal regulators. CBS immediately announced Colbert’s show would not be renewed next year, while insisting it was for financial reasons and not as a punitive action. On Wednesday, the creators of “South Park”, Trey Parker and Matt Stone had their long-delayed season debut on Paramount’s Comedy Central channel in which they torched the company for cancelling The Late Show, implying it was done solely to appease a frequent target of Colbert … President Trump. The President has said that CBS will air $20m worth of public service announcements in line with his ideological beliefs. In granting yesterday’s approval, FCC chairman and Trump appointee Brendan Carr mentioned Skydance’s promises to make “significant changes in the once-storied CBS broadcast network.” Skydance has not denied any of it. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/24/nx-s1-5477530/paramount-cbs-skydance-sale-fcc-approves
In spite of CEO Elon Musk’s return to hands-on oversight of Tesla, yesterday’s second quarter report continued to show a decline in sales and income. Sales were down 13 ½% and profits were off by 16% year-over-year. Still that’s better than the first quarter when sales were off by a similar amount and profit was off by 71%. In yesterday’s earnings call, Tesla painted a bleak picture for the rest of the year with new and used EV tax credits ending September 30. Tesla plans to ramp up production of its lowest-priced vehicle in anticipation of a bump in sales ahead of the end of subsidies. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/23/nx-s1-5477374/tesla-earnings-july-2025-elon-musk
UnitedHealth Group yesterday confirmed that its Medicare program is under investigation by the US Department of Justice and that it is cooperating. The nation’s largest health insurer has been in upheaval since the murder of a top executive last year. The investigation is focused on potential criminal fraud in the company’s Medicare Advantage program. The exact allegations are unclear. As recently as May, UnitedHealth issued statements saying it stood by “the integrity of our Medicare Advantage program” and said it had not been notified of any investigation by the DOJ. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/24/business/unitedhealth-investigation-doj

Today is the 25th. Happy Christmas in July! The annual summertime celebration sounds like something thought up by Hallmark, probably because the greeting card company has almost totally appropriated it over the past several decades. But it actually dates back about 90 years ago to a girls’ summer camp in North Carolina where the co-founder thought campers could use a little extra magic in the middle of summer. The idea was then co-opted by retailers and other commercial concerns – particularly those with interests in the Southern Hemisphere, where July is the middle of winter, so they could enjoy all the holiday vibes we in the North get every December. It’s also an excuse to watch Hallmark Christmas movies twice a year. www.morningbrew.com
On this day in music history – July 25,
- 1960 Roy Orbison went to #2 with his first hit, “Only the Lonely”, a song that had been turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis.
- In 1964, The Beatles third album, “A Hard Day’s Night” began the first of 21 weeks on top of the British album chart.
- In 1965, Bob Dylan went electric for the first time, backed by the Butterfield Blues Band at The Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island. Purists tried to boo him off the stage. Others responded enthusiastically. It’s been variously reported that the hostile reaction was Dylan abandoning the way things had always been done in folk music, or that the amplified sound quality was bad, or a combination of the two.
- In 1969, less than a month before Woodstock, The Seattle Pop Festival was held at Gold Creek Park in Woodinville, Washington. The three-day festival featured Chuck Berry, The Byrds, Chicago Transit Authority, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, The Doors, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Guess Who, It’s a Beautiful Day, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Spirit, Ten Years After, Ike & Tina Turner, Vanilla Fudge, Alice Cooper, and the Youngbloods, among others. Arguably almost as a strong a lineup as Woodstock.
- On the same day, Neil Young appeared with Crosby, Stills & Nash for the first time at The Fillmore East in New York. He ended up joining the group on and off for the next 30 years.
- In 1970, the Carpenters began the first of four weeks at #1 with “Close to You”. The 1963 song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David had been offered to Herb Alpert who wasn’t comfortable singing the lyrics. The Carpenters recorded on Alpert’s A&M label.
- In 1971, T Rex was at #1 in Britain with “Get It On”. For the U.S. market it was retitled “Bang a Gong (Get It On)”.
- In 1980 AC/DC released “Back in Black”, their first album without their lead singer, Bon Scott who died five months earlier. It went on to sell 50m copies worldwide – the biggest selling hard rock album of all time.
- In 1984, Big Momma Thornton died at the age of 58. She had the original hit with “Hound Dog” before Elvis.
- In 1995, country singer Charlie Rich died at age of 62.
- In 1999, the 40th anniversary Woodstock Festival ended with riots that resulted in the arrests of 120 people. Three people died and many were hospitalized from drinking polluted water.
- In 2014, Weird Al Yankovic became the first comedy act to have a #1 album in more than 50 years for “Straight Outta Lynwood”. The previous one was Alan Sherman’s “My Son the Nut” in 1963.
Born on this day …
- in 1942, Bruce Woodley from the Australian folk-pop quartet The Seekers – the first group from down under to have major success in the U.S.
- In 1943, Jim McCarty, drummer for The Yardbirds.
- In 1946, Jose Chepito Areas, percussionist for Santana on their first 8 albums.
- In 1950, Mark Clarke from Uriah Heep.
- And in 1951, Verdine White, bass player for Earth, Wind & Fire.
