LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A homicide investigation is underway as the result of a man physically attacking others outside Georgina Cole Library on Carlsbad Village Drive round 2 a.m. Saturday.  First responders found an unconscious, injured man and administered life-saving measures.  The victim died at the scene.  His identity is being withheld pending family notification. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/police-investigate-deadly-assault-outside-public-library-in-carlsbad

North County Transit District’s long-term plans include a train station on Camp Pendleton at Stuart Mesa, the current site of a train maintenance yard.  It would be the new northern terminus of the Coaster commuter line from San Diego.  Stuart Mesa is near a concentration of base housing and the half billion-dollar naval hospital that opened in 2014.  The northernmost stop for the Coaster is now at Oceanside Transit Center.  The Camp Pendleton train station has had preliminary approval since 2011.  NCTD says a station there could be operational in four years.  But a base spokesperson said last week that there are no current negotiations to make that happen. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/28/transit-districts-long-term-plan-includes-camp-pendleton-train-station/

A single-vehicle crash into a power pole on Santa Margarita Road in Fallbrook yesterday morning sent the driver to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.  The road was closed much of the day to fix the pole and downed live power lines.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/07/24/news/driver-suffers-life-threatening-injuries-power-pole-sheared-in-car-crash/79421.html

One person was arrested for DUI in a two-vehicle wreck on South Mission Road near Camino Cielo Friday night just after 10p.  Both the Tesla and Town and County van involved were totaled.  One person was hospitalized. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/07/24/news/southbound-lane-closed-after-two-vehicle-accident/79419.html

A Carlsbad hilltop soon could be added to a statewide list of more than 1,100 remote-controlled, high-definition, pan-tilt-zoom cameras watching for wildfires. The site is on the city’s La Costa High Reservoir property on Corintia Street in the La Costa Ridge neighborhood. The camera would overlook nearby wildland areas, including Rancho La Costa Preserve and Box Canyon. The camera can make a full sweep of the horizon every two minutes and have night-vision capabilities for 24-hour monitoring with up to 120 miles visibility.  Approval of the installation is expected at Tuesday’s Carlsbad City Council meeting. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/28/camera-that-detects-wildfires-proposed-for-eastern-carlsbad-hilltop/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres took two out of three over the weekend in St. Louis, including a 9-2 rout yesterday in which Manny Machado had four hits including two doubles.  He’d been hit by Cardinal pitches twice the day before.  The Dodgers lost two out of three in Boston.  The Mets swept the Giants in New York.  There are now four teams in the Majors with better records than the Dodgers – the Blue Jays, Mets, Cubs and Brewers.  But in the NL West, the Dodgers are still in first place by four games over the Padres and by seven over the Giants.  The Angels took two out of three from the visiting Mariners including a 4-1 win yesterday in which Mike Trout got his one thousandth career RBI on a two-run homer in the fifth inning.  Today, the Padres host the Mets, the Dodgers are in Cincinnati, the Giants host Pittsburgh, and the Angels host the Rangers.

This Saturday’s Speedway Classic between the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves is going to break the single-game attendance record for a Major League Baseball game.  More than 85k tickets have been sold for the one-off and first MLB game ever played in Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45842074/mlb-speedway-classic-break-single-game-attendance-record

The MLB trade deadline is this Thursday.

In the NFL – The league plans to fine more than 100 players and about two dozen club employees who were found in violation of the NFL’s Ticket Resale policy.  They’ll be fined up to two times the face value of the Super Bowl 59 tickets they resold at a profit.  Non-players found in violation of the policy will also lose the ability to purchase NFL tickets in the future.  League policy says employees and players can’t resell game tickets for more than their face value or what they paid, whichever is less. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/25/nfl-to-fine-players-for-reselling-super-bowl-tickets-at-a-profit.html

Four-time All-Pro kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson has been released by the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The 34-year old had just 11 returns for 240 total yards in his only season with the Steelers.  He only played in 13 games due to a mid-season ankle injury and didn’t participate in training camp this year. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45842791/cordarrelle-patterson-says-released-steelers

In the NBA – A pair of autographed Adidas EQT Top 10 shoes that Kobe Bryant wore in his first game with the Lakers just sold at auction for $240k. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45835739/sneakers-kobe-bryant-first-career-start-sell-240k

In the WNBA – The LA Sparks won at New York 101-99 Saturday.  Yesterday’s WNBA winners were Connecticut, Indiana, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Atlanta.  The Sparks next game is tomorrow hosting Las Vegas.

In Major League Soccer – San Diego beat Nashville Friday at Snapdragon Stadium 1-0.  LAFC lost to the Portland Timbers 1-0 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

In golf – At the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, Kurt Kitayama was the winner at 23 under-par 261. https://www.autoweek.com/racing/indycar/g35854859/indycar-legends-most-wins-single-season/

In racing – At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, starting in the #2 position, Bubba Wallace became the first black driver to win a NASCAR race at Indianapolis.  It was his second NASCAR Cup win this season.  And at Laguna Seca, Alex Palou led to pole to pole, winning the Grand Prix of Monterey yesterday.  It was his eighth Indycar win this season – something that hasn’t been done since 2007 … and there are still three races left in the season.  The record is ten wins in a season, held by AJ Foyt, who won 10 out of 13 in 1964 and Al Unser, who won 10 out of 18 in 1970.  Mario Andretti had nine wins in 1969 and eight in both 1966 and ’67. https://www.autoweek.com/racing/indycar/g35854859/indycar-legends-most-wins-single-season/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gave up two tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a small fraction.  The Nasdaq gained a quarter percent.  Gold fell $25 on the Comex to $3,310.60 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.70

President Trump announced yesterday that he’s reached a trade deal with the European Union.  Most EU exports to the US will face 15% tariffs – half of what had recently been threatened by the White House.  There is still no trade deal for the US with China, its biggest trading partner. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/28/g-s1-79858/up-first-newsletter-trump-united-nations-deal-medicaid-gaza-israel

Even though the first transcontinental railroad opened more than 150 years ago, two competing commercial rail companies are just now looking to create the first coast-to-coast railroad company.  America’s largest railroad, Union Pacific could announce a planned merger with Norfolk Southern as soon as next week.  Consolidation would produce a rail giant with market capitalization of $200b.  It would be up to the Surface Transportation Board to approve or reject such a deal.  It’s likely that other rail companies would either object, or insist on parity through mergers of their own.  A likely one that’s rumored to have been in negotiations is Burlington Northern Santa Fe and CSX.  There is already a north-south border-to-border railroad company – Central Pacific Kansas City which crosses both the Canadian and Mexican borders.  https://www.freightwaves.com/news/report-union-pacific-norfolk-southern-could-reach-merger-deal-by-next-week

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced today that the US automaker has signed a $16.5b deal to source chips from Samsung.  Shares in the South Korean company jumped 6.8% to their highest level since September on the news.  Tesla was up 1.9% in pre-market trading.  Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip will be made in a new Samsung factory in Taylor, Texas. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/28/business/tesla-samsung-chip-deal

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movies, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” had a fairly fantastic weekend, earning $118m in tickets sales on 4,100 screens.  That eclipsed the #2 film, “Superman”, which in its third week in theaters, earned another $24.9m.  “Jurassic World: Rebirth” was third, followed by “F1: The Movie” and “Smurfs”.  Limited releases “Oh, Hi!” and “The Home” opened in 9th and 10th place respectively.  The Top Ten total for the weekend was a third better than last week, but about 10% short of two weeks prior when Superman debuted. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W30/

There’s good chance that President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill will close a number of grocery stores – most of them in rural and low-income areas.  The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP – formerly known as food stamps accounts for a third or more of business at some retailers.  The recently approved bill which the Congressional Budget Office says will reduce federal spending on SNAP by $187b over the next decade will be the largest cut in the food assistance program’s 86-year history.  Large chains like Walmart, Kroger and Dollar General can absorb the hit.  But small, rural independent grocers that depend heavily on SNAP business won’t make it.  Many of those stores are the only full-service supermarket in their area.  When they close, they’re likely to trigger other economic consequences.  The Agriculture Department says every $5 in SNAP benefits generates as much as $9 in local economic activity.  House Republicans say the new law will “restore integrity” to SNAP and actually benefit grocers by pushing more people to work and not just rely on federal handouts.  But a study earlier this year by Commonwealth Fund says the cuts could result in the loss of 143k food-related jobs in agriculture, food processing and retail grocery.  New work requirements for SNAP are expanding to parents with children older than 13 and people ages 55 to 64. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/28/business/trump-big-beautiful-bill-snap-grocery

On this day in music history – July 28,

  • In 1956, Gene Vincent made his first national TV appearance on The Perry Como Show to promote his latest single, “Woman Love”.  But it was the B-side that ended up making the top ten.  A demo of it made its way to Capitol Records as part of an Elvis sound-alike contest.  That’s how the re-recorded version of “Bee-bop-a-lula” became Gene Vincent’s first hit single.
  • In 1960, Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” entered the charts, peaking at #2 in the U.S. The song had been turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis.
  • In 1966, Chris Farlow and the Thunderbirds hit #1 in the UK with their version of The Rolling Stones song “Out of Time” from the Stones’ “Aftermath” album.
  • In 1969, police in Moscow were dealing with thousands of cases of public phone vandalism after an article in a Russian youth magazine showed kids how to use phone parts to convert acoustic guitars to electric.
  • In 1973, over 600k people attended the Watkins Glen outdoor summer jam headlined by The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead.  The racetrack in New York state was the originally selected site for Woodstock four years earlier until operators decided they didn’t want a rock music festival at their venue.  A lot changed in four years.
  • In 1992, Rapper Ice T announced that his label, Warner Brothers would pull the controversial song “Cop Killer” from all future copies of the “Body Count” album.  Protests by law enforcement groups said it encouraged the killing of police.  Ice T said he would instead give away copies of Cop Killer at his concerts.  Ironically, he later joined the cast of the NBC police drama, “Law and Order”.
  • In 2008, Amy Winehouse was rushed to a hospital after apparently suffering a reaction to medication she was taking to help her off hard drugs.
  • In 2011, singer Meat Loaf passed out onstage from an asthma attack.  After taking about ten minutes off, he regained his composure and finished the show.
  • In 2014, Linda Ronstadt was honored with a National Medal of Arts at the White House.  She had missed her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three months earlier – the result of Parkinson’s disease limiting her ability to travel.

Born on this day …

  • In 1938, George Cummings, steel guitar player for Dr. Hook
  • In 1943, guitarist Mike Bloomfield, who was a member of the Paul Butterfield band and Electric Flag as well as playing on Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” album.  Bloomfield died of a heroin overdose in 1981.
  • Also in 1943, Richard Wright, keyboardist with Pink Floyd.
  • In 1948, Gerald Casale, founding member of Devo and director of the rock music videos for that group and many others.
  • In 1949, Peter Doyle from The New Seekers, Simon Kirke – drummer for Free and Bad Company, and Steve Took, drummer with T. Rex
