Olivet University, the embattled Christian College based in Anza has received approval from the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to rezone most of its 1k acre property for residential development.  The plan calls for one single-family residence on minimum 5-acre lots along Tripp Flats Road, north of Highway 371.  The rezoning allows for limited agriculture, livestock, and small-scale commercial use.  The application states that rezoning would pave the way for expansion of Olivet’s campus.  The school, led by Korean pastor David Jang was established in 2004 in the Bay Area and has been headquartered in Anza since 2014.  It has satellite campuses in Los Angeles and Mill Valley as well as five other states and Washington DC.  Olivet is under federal investigation for alleged human labor trafficking, money laundering and visa fraud, and faces the potential loss of its accreditation. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/31/embattled-olivet-university-in-anza-wins-approval-to-rezone-its-open-land-for-residential-use/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres completed a sweep of the NL East-leading Mets with a 5-0 shutout yesterday.  Yu Darvish got the win pitching seven strong innings in which he gave up just two hits and struck out 7.  Left fielder Gavin Sheets had a two-run homer in the third inning. Cincinnati beat the Dodgers 5-2.  The Giants lost to the visiting Pirates 2-1 in ten innings.  The Padres are now within three games of the division-leading Dodgers and six games ahead of third-place San Francisco.  The Angels lost to the visiting Rangers 6-3.  The Padres and Pirates are tied for longest current win streak in the Majors at five games.  Just three games today.  Tomorrow, the Padres open a weekend series hosting St. Louis, the Dodgers are at Tampa Bay, the Giants are in New York to play the Mets, and the Angels host the White Sox.

With an already strong bullpen, the Padres have acquired reliever Mason Miller and left-handed starter JP Sears from the A’s.  In exchange, the A’s get 18-year-old minor-league shortstop Leodalis De Vries – the #3 prospect in baseball, and right handers Braden Nett, Henry Baez and Eduarniel Nuñez.  26-year old Miller has 20 saves and a 3.76 ERA in 38 appearances this season with the last-place A’s.  The Padres are also said to be in talks with the Red Sox about Jarren Duran and with Cleveland about Steven Kwan. The MLB trade deadline is today.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45868031/sources-padres-acquiring-mason-miller-jp-sears-as

MLB and NASCAR team up for the first time this Saturday with a regular season game between Atlanta and Cincinnati at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.  It will be the first-ever Major League game at a NASCAR track and the first-ever big-league game in Tennessee.  The aim is to expand baseball’s audience and attract a younger crowd.  Pre-sales indicate this will probably be the largest crowd ever at an MLB game.  Over 85k of the 90k seats at Bristol have been sold. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/31/mlb-nascar-bristol-motor-speedway-classic.html

In the NFL – The league’s one-year experiment with the new kickoff rule known as the dynamic kickoff becomes permanent this season.  It was designed to increase the rate of kickoff returns.  Touchbacks that reach the end zone on the fly will now be placed at the 35-yard line instead of the 30.  Last year’s experiment with kickoffs resulted in returns increasing from a record-low 21.8% in 2023 to 32.8% last season while reducing the rate of injuries.  Kickoffs are the game’s most dangerous play.  Moving the touchback to the 35 is expected to increase returns to more than 60%.  Also approved are changes to the overtime rule, expanded replay assist and a few other technical changes.  An overtime change adopted for the 2022 playoffs will now apply to the regular season, in which both teams get a chance to score even if overtime’s opening possession results in a touchdown. https://apnews.com/article/nfl-rule-changes-0f438c2cbd5406c2a5336a8273e1f1d9

In the WNBA – Last night’s winners were Indiana, Atlanta and Minnesota.  One game tonight – Golden State at Washington.  Tomorrow’s five-game schedule includes the LA Sparks at Seattle.

In Major League Soccer – Nine games this Saturday – none of them involving Southern California teams.

In golf – The Wyndham Championship teed off this morning at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Aaron Rai is the defending champion.  With half the field still on the course, Joel Dahmen led into the clubhouse at 9 under par.

In racing – NASCAR Cup this Sunday at Iowa Speedway

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up – although just barely for the Dow.  The S&P 500 was up 4 tenths of a percent.  The Nasdaq gained ¾ of a percent.  Gold fell $1.70 on the Comex to $3,351.00 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 67 cents to $69.33 a barrel.

President Trump announced yesterday that he’s extending the existing 25% tariffs on Mexican goods for 90 days.  Items that are compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada trade deal signed during Trump’s first term are excluded from any tariffs.  Higher tariffs were supposed to go into effect tomorrow.  Mexico is the US’s largest trading partner.  It is also this country’s #2 export partner behind Canada. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/31/business/trump-mexico-tariff

Higher taxes on US auto manufacturer imports like aluminum and steel plus tariffs on foreign-made parts and imported vehicles have hit the industry hard.  But according to Kelley Blue Book, so far, the increased costs have not been passed on to customers.  Prices consumers pay for vehicles are up 1.2% since June one year ago.  That’s actually a smaller price increase than the ten-year average.  The average price of a new car is now almost $50k.  Even used cars are averaging almost $30k.  A record number of vehicle owners are now paying more than $1k a month on their auto loans, and a growing share of owners owe more than their car is worth thanks to increasingly lengthy loans.  New vehicles are increasingly becoming unaffordable.  That’s why the last thing automakers want to do is increase prices.  So instead, they’ve been absorbing the losses due to tariffs.  GM, Hyundai, Kia and Volkswagen are all still profitable at this point.  Stellantis is not, but it has other problems.  Some companies are keeping costs under control by moving production to the US.  Others are squeezing their suppliers to share the tariff burden.  At some point, prices may have to rise.  But it could be done in subtle ways, like higher rates on promotional financing, or smaller cash back offers.  Experts say to expect those changes along with moderate MSRP increases when the 2026 models hit the showrooms in the next few months. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/30/nx-s1-5482857/automakers-eating-tariff-costs

Pharma company, Moderna will cut 10% from its global workforce of 5,800 by the end of the year.  It’s due to slower demand for Covid shot sales and general uncertainty in the vaccine market. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/31/moderna-to-slash-10percent-of-workforce-amid-covid-vaccine-sales.html

Moderna and rival BioNTech both vaulted into the public eye during the pandemic, reaping about $45b in vaccine sales for each.  Since then, Moderna has doubled down on its pioneering messenger RNA technology and vaccines for flu, RSV and other less-common viruses, while BioNTech diversified into immunology and oncology.  BioNTech now has about twice as much cash on-hand as Moderna.  Their stock performance tells an even greater story.  BioNTech shares have gained 29% over the past year.  Moderna’s have lost 72%.  Moderna will release its 2nd quarter report tomorrow. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/31/covid-vaccine-makers-moderna-biontech-stocks-mrna-strategies-diverge-.html

Finally, some good news for a pharmacy chain.  CVS profits beat expectations, causing its stock to jump 8% in pre-market trading this morning and allowing it to raise its profit forecast. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20250731136/cvss-stock-jumps-as-a-profit-beat-was-expected-but-not-by-as-much-as-it-did

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Best Buy announced today it will put mini-showrooms in ten of its stores in Florida and Texas to show off kitchen design elements from IKEA alongside Best Buy home appliances.  The companies did not disclose the financial arrangements for the 1k square foot mini-showrooms.  Best Buy has struggled with rising tariffs and soft demand for home appliances due to a sluggish housing market. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/31/best-buy-ikea-partnership.html

President Trump is quoted as saying, “if you get ratings, you can say or do anything”.  By that measure, the animated TV show, “South Park” can continue its savage criticism of Trump.  The show’s 27th season premiere last week attracted a record 5.9m viewers on Comedy Central cable and the Paramount+ streaming service.  It was the biggest share of the cable audience for a season premiere since 1999.  An important metric in addition to ratings is how viral a video becomes on social media.  The South Park premier’s social media presence last week was epic.  South Park ridiculed Trump personally and called out its network’s parent company, Paramount both for agreeing to settle the legally-dubious Trump lawsuit against CBS News and the cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” that came within days of Colbert criticizing the settlement.  South Park is known as an equal-opportunity offender. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/30/business/south-park-ratings

On this day in music history – July 31,

  • On the same day, John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas was arrested for cocaine possession.  He was sentenced to 250 hours community service giving anti-drug lectures.
  • In 1982, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” was at #1.  It had been commissioned by Sylvester Stallone for the movie “Rocky III”, received an Oscar nomination and sold over 5m copies.
